China's Forgotten Daughters
Left at the gates of the people's commune when she was just a few weeks old, Fengxia Cai has been looking for her birth parents for over a decade. One of millions of baby girls abandoned at birth due to China's rigidly-enforced one-child policy, she was lucky enough to be brought up in a loving adoptive family. And yet, the pain of being unwanted still runs deep. Now in her 30s with children of her own, Fengxia has joined thousands of other lost daughters, all searching for their blood
relations. But when she finally finds them, she discovers that belonging isn't always in the blood.
China's Forgotten Daughters tells an intimate story of one woman's journey that challenges traditional notions of family and identity, revealing the wounds that 40 years of the one-child policy have inflicted at the very heart of Chinese society.
