The Ultimate Anime Gore List!

by revrevs | created - 25 Jun 2012 | updated - 27 Oct 2013 | Public

My list of the goriest animes ever made! Listed from tamest at the top (#1) to most violent at the bottom. For those who think my list doesn't meet the popular opinion - it wasn't made for meeting the popular opinion.

If I'm missing anything notable leave me a comment and I'll check it out.

@Viva_Chiba Thanks for reminding me of Golgo 13. That's a very good anime and it's fairly gruesome. Added.

Currently looking into:

Afro Samurai Basilisk Doomed Megalopolis New Fist of the North Star Black Lagoon: Roberta's Blood Trail

Currently unlisted anime on imdb: Maju Sensen aka Demon-Beast Phalanx

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=7369

http://www.animevice.com/demon-beast-phalanx/13-184/

I haven't been able to add this 3 part OVA series to imdb. The director is listed as Shunji Ôga and this title is nowhere on his directorial information. If anyone is capable of adding this title and has the proper information for it I'd greatly appreciate it.

::March 10th, 2013 update::

On further contemplation I'm removing Barefoot Gen and Space Runaway Ideon to reenforce the gore theme of this list rather than picking out scenes from generally non-violent media.

Removed the accidental placement of the live action film Jubei's Revenge. The live action movie came out around the same time as Ninja Resurrection part 2 sharing the same title. Both parts will be counted as one.

Bumped up Elfen Lied and Claymore a tad after further review. More to come soon!

Stars: Toshio Furukawa, Chiharu Kataishi, Steve Bulen, Kôji Totani

Crying Freeman 1's brief gore scenes accompanied by its commonplace graphic violence lands itself on the bottom of the list. Even the more squeamish viewers can still enjoy Portrait of a Killer.

Stars: Akira Kamiya, Shigeru Chiba, Teiyû Ichiryûsai, Tomiko Suzuki

Votes: 3,574

Fist of the North Star would be much higher on the list if it wasn't for the clever censorship throughout the series.

3. Fist of the North Star 2 (1987–1988)

Stars: Takeshi Kusao, Yûko Mizutani, Hideyuki Tanaka, Kôzô Shioya

Votes: 1,018

This mildly gory anime adaptation of The Guyver manga is sure to please many anime buffs or those who grew up with the character, but its tamer retelling doesn't help it climb further up the gore list.

5. Ichi the Killer: Episode 0 (2002 Video)

Animated prequel to Ichi the Killer (2001), focusing on the origin story of the psychopathic killer Ichi.

Director: Shinji Ishihira | Stars: Chihiro Suzuki, Shinpachi Tsuji, Sayaka Ôhara, Takashi Miike

Votes: 822

Don't expect this animated Ichi the Killer prequel to be as nasty as the 2001 live action counterpart. It's worth a watch if you're an Ichi the Killer fan.

Episode: AD Police Files 3: The Man Who Bites His Tongue (1990)

Not Rated | 40 min | Animation, Crime, Sci-Fi

A cop who became a full conversion cyborg faces the full tragic consequences of that condition.

Directors: Takamasa Ikegami, Akira Nishimori | Stars: Toshio Furukawa, Adam Henderson, Brad Moranz, Youko Matsuoka

Votes: 186

This third OVA from the inconsistently entertaining A.D. Police Files series was the goriest -- if minutely so.

7. Golgo 13: The Professional (1983)

Lots of action, severing, and somewhat detailed mutilations. Golgo 13 is a very fun action movie geared for an adult audience.

8. Guyver: Out of Control (1986 Video)

Guyver: Out of Control is a hastily produced movie which had a more coherent anime adaptation a few years later. It's gorier than the anime series but not quite as good.

9. Kite (1998)

TV-MA | 50 min | Animation, Action, Crime

A young girl, orphaned at an early age, carries out assassinations at the behest of her mentor.

Stars: Konami Yoshida, Kinryû Arimoto, Kôsuke Okano, Tatsuo Matoba

In Kite the assassins fire weapons with high explosive rounds causing all kinds of nasty bodily explosions. The movie can be a highly enjoyable action/drama piece but not for everyone.

10. The Curse of Kazuo Umezu (1990 Video)

43 min | Animation, Short, Horror

Two stories about teen-aged girls who encounter supernatural horrors.

Director: Naoko Omi | Stars: Ikuya Sawaki, Shinobu Adachi, Narumi Aoki, Osamu Hosoi

Votes: 370

This is a short horror film double feature from the works of Kazuo Umezu. It's not nearly as violent as Midori however it still maintains its level of creepiness. A good watch for Halloween.

11. Violence Jack (1986–1990)
Episode: Violence Jack, Part 1, Slum King (1986)

Stars: Hiroya Ishimaru, Kaneto Shiozawa, Tesshô Genda, Norio Wakamoto

Votes: 2,316

Cyber City Oedo's focus is more on the action but it does have its fair share of graphic scenes and mutilations if a bit brief. I'd suggest this three volume series to anyone.

15. Bio Hunter (1995 Video)

Unrated | 58 min | Animation, Fantasy, Horror

Two biologists attempt to distribute the cure for a demonic virus spreading throughout Japan, but when one of them is infected, he must learn to harness his demon side.

Directors: Yûzô Satô, Yoshiaki Kawajiri | Stars: Matt McKenzie, Matt K. Miller, Sherry Lynn, Mike Reynolds

Bio Hunter has its moments of well defined ultra-violence as well as a very creative final death scene.

16. Wicked City (1987)

Not Rated | 82 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

While protecting a signatory to a peace treaty between their peoples, a male human and a female demon discover that their mutual attraction may be the key to unifying their worlds.

Director: Yoshiaki Kawajiri | Stars: Yûsaku Yara, Toshiko Fujita, Ichirô Nagai, Takeshi Aono

Votes: 9,584

Wicked City's extremely dark style obscures most of its gore content making it hard to place it higher on this list. This shouldn't deter anime or movie buffs from this awesome feature.

17. M.D. Geist (1986 Video)

M.D. Geist is great, mindless, violent, anime fun. Those who can't enjoy it are probably a bunch of teenagers who want to see something "profound" or "life changing". I grew a second pair watching this; I'd consider that life changing.

18. Berserk (1997–1998)

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

Guts, a wandering mercenary, joins the Band of the Hawk after being defeated in a duel by Griffith, the group's leader and founder. Together, they dominate every battle, but something menacing lurks in the shadows.

Stars: Marc Diraison, Nobutoshi Canna, Carrie Keranen, Kevin T. Collins

Votes: 53,120

High action, a very good plot, and plenty of gore. While its excessive violence is prevalent throughout the show; it isn't detailed enough to climb very far up the list.

19. Mad Bull 34 (1990–1992)

195 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

The most dangerous area in New York City, the 34th precinct, is patrolled by the most brutal cop, Sleepy John Estes the Mad Bull.

Yuji Kaido was diagnosed with a serious disease and since there was no cure for the unknown illness, he was cryogenically frozen.

Stars: Laura Bailey, Eric Vale, Houko Kuwashima, Kenji Nojima

Votes: 1,321

Giant insects decimate humanity in this Starship Troopers-esque drama. There's plenty of grisliness throughout as minor and main characters are killed off one by one.

21. Elfen Lied (2004)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Drama

Two university students come across a seemingly harmless girl named Lucy, unaware that she's actually a mutant serial killer with a split personality.

Stars: Sanae Kobayashi, Chihiro Suzuki, Mamiko Noto, Sam Saletta

Votes: 36,904

I'm not a fan of Elfen Lied, but it does deserve some merit for what it tries to be even if it's more bloody than gory. Note: bloody. Very very bloody.

22. Claymore (2007)

TV-MA | 24 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

A deadly breed of monster - the Yoma - has only one foe: Claymore. These warrior women, human-Yoma hybrids, can deliver salvation by the edge of a blade for a fee. This is the tale of the Claymore called Clare's solitary path to vengeance.

Stars: Todd Haberkorn, Stephanie Young, Houko Kuwashima, Cherami Leigh

Votes: 15,164

Once your average viewer gets past its faults, Claymore transforms itself into a hack n slash mess worthy of the gore list.

23. Gantz (2004)

TV-MA | 22 min | Animation, Action, Drama

After their deaths, two teens are transported to an apartment with an ominous black sphere and must participate in a gory alien-hunting "game."

Stars: Hiroshi Kamiya, Daisuke Namikawa, John Swasey, Chris Ayres

Votes: 8,635

Gantz moves at the pace of a snail often revealing twists and secrets that could easily be guessed, but it does have its moments of fine gory goodness.

24. Battle Royal High School (1987 Video)

60 min | Animation, Action, Drama

Hyoudo Riki is just an ordinary guy who likes to wear a tiger mask while Kung-Fu fighting, which means he fits in real well at BATTLE ROYAL HIGH SCHOOL.

Director: Ichirô Itano | Stars: Shin Aomori, David Arnold, Ralph Brownewell, Pierre Brulatour

Votes: 276

Behold the most 80s cheeseball anime ever made! Battle Royal High School is as delectably gruesome as Violence Jack or Devilman but don't expect the plot to make any sense.

25. Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma (1989)

Blood Reign: Curse of the Yoma features a mildly entertaining start leading to an explosively intense finale. The plot gets a little nonsensical at the end but that doesn't stop this two part video from being a bloody good time.

26. Vampire Hunter D (1985)

When Doris Lang is chosen as the next bride for the vampire Count Magnus Lee, she will hire a mysterious vampire hunter known only as D in an attempt to escape her ill-gotten fate.

Director: Toyoo Ashida | Stars: Kaneto Shiozawa, Michie Tomizawa, Seizô Katô, Satoko Kifuji

The series starts off at a tournament where a one armed samurai faces a blind one and quickly flashes back to reveal the history between the two fighters.

Stars: Daisuke Namikawa, Emi Shinohara, Seizô Katô, Mike McFarland

Votes: 2,687

In its current state, Shigurui: Death Frenzy is incomplete but that shouldn't deter anime fans from this bloody Madhouse masterpiece.

28. Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan (2005– )

Animation, Comedy, Fantasy

A boy is fond of an angel that kills him again and again.

Stars: Laura Bailey, Johnny Yong Bosch, Kyle Hebert, Wendee Lee

Votes: 902

Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan is a trick. You think you're watching another crappy romance show with bubble-headed little girls until it quickly transforms into a comedic bloodbath. It's not for everyone (or myself for that matter), but those who enjoy it, love it.

29. Midori (1992)

Unrated | 47 min | Animation, Drama, Horror

Much like Urotsukidoji, Nightmare Campus is an ultra-violent hentai and manages to stay fairly original. The dub's funny, the action is great, but the lack of detail and production value doesn't carry it too far.

32. Hellsing (2001–2002)

TV-MA | 23 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

A British taskforce, lead by the daughter of the vampire hunter Prof. Van Helsing, battles the supernatural with the aid of two vampires.

Stars: Jôji Nakata, Yoshiko Sakakibara, Fumiko Orikasa, Steven Brand

High action and high violence. Hellsing is a very well made vampire themed anime. Not to be missed by those who love their undead bloodbaths extra chunky.

Not Rated | 180 min | Animation, Action, Sci-Fi

An elite anti-terrorist agent battles terrorists threatening Japan, but a mysterious third player is involved in their own way.

35 min | Animation, Action, Comedy

The evil Helga has built an army based on slavery and exploitation, Dr Vall who is a resident of Planet Geo, discovers a process that turns the inmates to monsters. But Guy and Reina can fix it.

Stars: Naoko Matsui, Show Hayami, Yumi Takada, Hironori Miyata

Votes: 63

Guy: Double Target follows the popular theme of high violence, sex, and bad dubbing seen within most adult oriented early 90s anime. If you're watching it for the plot; you're watching it for the wrong reason.

35. Devilman (1987–1990)

TV-MA | 57 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

Devilman faces the tortoise demon Jinmen and birdwoman Shiranu.

Stars: Show Hayami, Alan Marriott, Yû Mizushima, Adam Matalon

Votes: 1,862

So bad it's GREAT! Devil Man Volume 1 has it all while still not being too offensive or shocking in violent content. It's a great gory anime that doesn't try to be too pretentious or preachy with its religious themes.

Devil Man Volume 2 is much more focused on monster/demon fighting than the other OVAs in the series and very enjoyable if you're looking for some mindless action.

36. Black Lion (1992 Video)

TV-MA | 60 min | Animation, Action, Adventure

There's plenty of human anatomy thrown around in this short and strange OVA. Go Nagai's: Black Lion is best enjoyed for the action and carnage.

37. Berserk: The Golden Age Arc III - The Advent (2013)

A year has passed since Guts parted ways with Griffith. The Band of the Hawk is plotting a rescue mission to save Griffith who is confined to prison.

Director: Toshiyuki Kubooka | Stars: Marc Diraison, Hiroaki Iwanaga, Carrie Keranen, Takahiro Sakurai

The movie retelling of the anime's final moments is far more graphic this time around. An enjoyable feature if a bit disjointed and rushed.

38. Ninja Scroll (1993)

Easily the most twisted episode of Violence Jack. Expect child killing, a woman being split down the middle, and some bizarre cannibalistic super powers. Not for those who are easily offended.

42. Ogre Slayer (1995)

60 min | Animation, Fantasy, Horror

A demon (or ogre) born in human form hunts other demons (or ogres) to become fully human.

Stars: Jason Gray-Stanford, Jillian Michaels, Takeshi Kusao, Aya Hisakawa

Votes: 62

Ogre Slayer or Onikirimaru is a slow start - using minimal yet graphic violence then finishes strong on its fourth and final OVA. The plot is nothing to write home about but it's certainly one of the gorier animes out there.

43. Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend (1989)

Not Rated | 108 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

The relative coexistence of the human world, demon world and beast world is soon to be disrupted by The Overfiend, an immensely powerful demon who'll be reborn after 3000 years to remake the world to his own liking.

Director: Hideki Takayama | Stars: Christopher Courage, Rebel Joy, Sonny Weil, Bick Balse

Votes: 3,665

The great Urotsukidoji. Those who have seen it, never forget it. This is a rather short (and infamous) anime that covers a wide range of adult content. BEWARE OF ITS TERRIBLE SEQUELS AND RIPOFFS.

44. Hellsing Ultimate (2006–2012)

Not Rated | 50 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

The vampire Alucard, his master Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing, and his newly sired ward Seras Victoria, try to protect England from a war-crazed SS-Major who seeks to start an eternal war with his vampire army.

Stars: Katie Gray, Crispin Freeman, Victoria Harwood, Ralph Lister

This second adaptation of Hellsing is a poorly paced mess littered with moments of unfitting music and comedic relief. Despite the significant violence boost of its predecessor; it's much harder to take seriously. For anime fans only.

47. Blood-C (2011)

TV-MA | 287 min | Animation, Action, Fantasy

Saya is a seemingly normal girl living with her father in a shrine. During the day she goes to school and spends time with her friends at a local cafe. But when night falls Saya is called upon to protect her village from strange monsters.

Stars: Alexis Tipton, Todd Haberkorn, Robert McCollum, Lydia Mackay

Votes: 2,036

Blood-C's later gore scenes suggest that this studio tried way too hard to encourage unexpected shock value in an otherwise uneventful show. All in all its gruesome content is not a far-cry from Devilman Volume 3's but the amount of it is certainly more extreme than most violent anime.

48. Fist of the North Star (1986)

Not Rated | 110 min | Animation, Action, Drama

In a post-nuclear hellscape, a master of the deadly martial art "Hokuto Shinken" allies with two kids and an expert in "Nanto Suicho-Ken" to battle the tyrants who kidnapped his lover.

Director: Toyoo Ashida | Stars: Akira Kamiya, Yuriko Yamamoto, Kenji Utsumi, Chikao Ôtsuka

When I first compiled this list I knew exactly where Genocyber would end up, and I'm pretty sure many would agree. Viewers beware (or rejoice?), this is easily the goriest anime ever made.
