The X-Files - Season 2 (7.4/10)

Average episode rating = 7.4/10

Even if this might be an unpopular sentiment, I prefer the first season to the second. It might be true that the second season has more real stand outs or classics of the show if you will but there is a more detrimental lack of consistency in this season as well as 'average' monster-of-the-week episodes that I find less enjoyable.

The Scully and Mulder dynamic, while strong, I don't find as gripping as in the first season and this I find is largely due to the X-Files being terminated at the beginning of the season and Scully's subsequent abduction.

For as many episodes that bore me in this season, there are almost an equal number of episodes I absolutely adore and help solidify the second season as another X-Files classic. My favourites of the season in order would be:

1. Irresistible (2x13) 2. Die Hand Die Verletzt (2x14) 3. Duane Barry (2x05) 4. Anasazi (2x25) 4. Die Hand Die Verletzt (2x14) 5. Ascension (2x06)

5/5 - IMO, one of the more underrated episodes of The X-Files. This is in a handful of my favourite episodes of the show. Such a powerful episode, it feeds on Scully's own fears and doubts (especially after prior abduction experiences) as much as the audiences. Amazingly disturbing guest performance from Chinlund and one of the show's darkest and most aggressive pieces. So powerful emotionally and such a great character episode. Chris Carter's wonderfully realized teleplay and David Nutter's sublime direction also stand out.

4.5/5 - Iconic and the entry of one Kim Manners, the show's most prolific director into the series. Also the last Morgan & Wong penned episode before their return with "Home" in the fourth season. They left with an absolute bang and a laugh. Chilling and darkly hilarious episode.
