Foreign Language Film Submissions to the 90th Academy Awards held in 2018 to get an Oscar Nomination in the Best Non-English Movie Category
92 COUNTRIES IN COMPETITION FOR 2017 FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OSCAR!
Since 1956 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) presents annually an Academy Award (widely known as Oscar) to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. Lots of film industries of various independent states and autonomous regions were invited to submit the best film of the year from their country. The submitted films of the year 2017 selection process had to be first released theatrically in their home countries between 1 October 2016 and 30 September 2017. The deadline for the submissions was 2 October 2017. At 5 October 2017 the Academy announced a list of eligible contenders from 92 countries. This are seven films more than last year which represents a new all time record in the history of the foreign language award category.
68 male [♂] and 27 female [♀] directors (also a new record) are responsible for the realization of the submitted foreign language films in 2017. Only two films are realized by a director duo. Among the Submissions there are in total 3 documentaries but no animated feature like the last year.
The six countries Haiti, Honduras, Laos, Mozambique, Senegal and Syria have submitted a film for the first time in the 61-year history of this award category.
After the annually shortlisting of nine finalist films from the list below during late December 2017 approximately four weeks thereafter the final five nominees were announced at 23 January 2018. The 90th anniversary Oscars ceremony with the winner announcement will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018!
