Halloween Month 2017
The best time of the year to watch horror movies! Decided to watch at least 31 movies during the month, new and old. Not one to usually get scared at 'scary' movies, but they still are my favorite genera. Here they are in order of watching.

- DirectorCezil ReedLydelle JacksonStarsJohn HalasAlana JacklerLynnette GazaTwo strangers must discover a way to escape a sinister family who wishes to sacrifice their souls to an evil presence.Random first movie I had not seen. Odd feeling to the movie, seems kinda like a college movie project. Weird scense that don't seem to make sense, but it's not terrible. Not really sure how I feel about this one, not sure if I'd watch it again, but it definitely was a creepy first shot.
- DirectorJeff LiebermanStarsAlexander BrickelKatheryn WinnickStephen GrahamA naive young boy unknowingly becomes the pawn of a serial killer.Great little movie I found years ago and have since watched it every year in October. Low budget, kinda cheesy, but that's part of its charm. Dark comedy along with gore and death. Good times.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsAngela BettisBrent RoamMarco RodríguezA historic Hollywood hotel houses a supernatural evil. It's been subdued for decades, but when renovations start, a series of murders take place.Found this low budget movie years back while exploring the actress of one of my favorite movies May, Angela Bettis. Great movie I hadn't watched in awhile. The architecture and symbol parts towards the end give it kind of a Lovecraft feel. Don't wanna give it all away, but great movie to check out. Directed by the great Tobe Hooper.
(Side note: May will not appear in this list since I just watched it earlier in the year with a mate that had not yet seen it. He liked it as much as I do.) - DirectorSteve BeckStarsJulianna MarguliesGabriel ByrneRon EldardA salvage crew discovers a long-lost 1962 passenger ship floating lifeless in a remote region of the Bering Sea, and soon notices that its long-dead inhabitants may still be on board.Always a fun ride. Great actors/actress' and a great sound track. Plenty of blood and gore along with the fear of ghosts and being along in an abandoned ship in the middle of the sea. Have to say, one of the first death scenes on the deck of the ship with all the people dancing, great opening.
- DirectorZack SnyderStarsSarah PolleyVing RhamesMekhi PhiferA nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.A very good adaptation of the original. Modernized and slight changes, but still holds great to Romero's original. Love the original, as well as the rest of the 'of the Dead' movies, and always love the original movies made before all the remakes that keep coming up, but some stand out, like this one!
- DirectorBrian De PalmaStarsSissy SpacekPiper LaurieAmy IrvingCarrie White, a shy, friendless teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother, unleashes her telekinetic powers after being humiliated by her classmates at her senior prom.Speaking of originals, the remake was great and has it's own flair, but to me, you can't beat Sissy Spacek. Always a great watch, and the book is even better. For some reason, when I think of times back in the day I wasn't around for, I imagine this movie. Not necessarily the whole blood prom and all, but the way people were then and town life and all.
- DirectorFritz KierschStarsPeter HortonLinda HamiltonR.G. ArmstrongA young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believes that everyone over age 18 must be killed.Realized that after all this time, I have never actually seen more that maybe 15 minutes of parts of this movie. Kinda sad to admit from a horror buff like myself, but I'm not afraid to admit it. Great classic movie.
- DirectorJim StenstrumStarsScott InnesBilly WestMary Kay BergmanThe Mystery Gang reunite and visit Moonscar Island, a remote island with a dark secret. Daphne wants more than just a villain in a costume, and they get more than they ever expected. What can I say about this? It's Scooby-Doo! One of the last good movies or anything to come from Scooby. Love the songs as well. All around good stuff.
- DirectorDon ManciniStarsAllison Dawn DoironAlex VincentBrad DourifChucky returns to terrorize his human victim, Nica. Meanwhile, the killer doll has some scores to settle with his old enemies, with the help of his former wife.Since it was available on Netflix, decided to watch this one. Haven't seen all the Chucky movies, not a real big fan of all of them, but do have to give respect where respect is due. For one, the franchise is one of very few from it's starting time that's still making movies, and they're not complete crap or remakes. Two, it's also one where the villain is played by/voiced by the same actor from the start. All in all, not a bad movie. Some really good death scenes. I missed some of the overall story by not seeing Curse of Chucky, but it still made a good movie.
- DirectorJeremy GillespieSteven KostanskiStarsAaron PooleKenneth WelshEllen WongShortly after delivering a patient to an understaffed hospital, a police officer experiences strange and violent occurrences seemingly linked to a group of mysterious hooded figures. This is a trip! Not really sure I even know what was going on by the end of this one. However, it's a very interesting alien/cult like movie. Small cast, mostly one setting in a hospital. Worth a watch.
- DirectorMatthijs van Heijningen Jr.StarsMary Elizabeth WinsteadJoel EdgertonUlrich ThomsenAt an Antarctica research site, the discovery of an alien craft leads to a confrontation between graduate student Kate Lloyd and scientist Dr. Sander Halvorson.Hadn't seen this movie since it was in theaters. Decided with mates to do a double feature with this and the 'original' from 1982. Seeing as this was a prequel we watched it first. They did a great job with this one. Glad it wasn't a remake.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.Hadn't seen this one in possibly longer than when the prequel came out. Seeing them back to back really lit up how much work they put into the 2011 to line things up with this classic. Really not much more to say about this, if you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsCarla GuginoBruce GreenwoodChiara AureliaA couple tries to spice up their marriage in a remote lake house. After the husband dies unexpectedly, the wife is left handcuffed to their bed frame and must fight to survive and break free.Another King movie. A newer one this time. Kept hearing good things about this one from a good source, so what better time than now to watch. Really good movie with crazy psychological pulls. Let alone the name of the 'man' in the movie really set things off for me, as well as the way he/it was portrayed. Kinda slow to start, but once it gets going, hold on.
- DirectorEli RothStarsJordan LaddRider StrongJames DeBelloFive college graduates rent a cabin in the woods and begin to fall victim to a horrifying flesh-eating virus, which attracts the unwanted attention of the homicidal locals.Great movie sure to become a classic and introduced a new master of gore and horror, Eli Roth. A look into viral outbreak that isn't zombie. Not sure what else to say bout this one, always a good watch.
- DirectorRafa MartínezStarsIngrid García JonssonBruno SevillaOriol TarridaA young real estate broker is planning a romantic meeting with her boyfriend in an old apartment building. But the couple is forced to fight for their lives, when a group of murderers is trying to kill them.Interesting flick. Spanish, but most of the movie is still in English, few parts with subtitles. Kinda a show of strength and what you can do when you have to unexpectedly fight for your life from unknown assailants. Was a good addition.
- DirectorPaul W.S. AndersonStarsLaurence FishburneSam NeillKathleen QuinlanA rescue crew is tasked with investigating the mysterious reappearance of a spaceship that had been lost for seven years.Always a favorite! One of my top horror/alien/space, or however else you want to categorize this one. Really wish there was more to the story with a sequel or something. The graphics still hold up today with what they were capable of at the time, and really seems to be an underrated movie that kinda got lost. Perhaps it was ahead of its time.
- DirectorBen JehoshuaStarsKian LawleyElizabeth KeenerAngelica CassidyWhen a child-stealing demon attaches itself to a little girl, her family is thrust into a battle against time in order to save the girl and send the demon back to hell. This has an interesting concept. Demonic possession with the only way to save the child being sacrifices of blood relatives. For some, could be an easy choice, but I'm sure for most families, this would prove to be quite difficult. While decent concept and not terrible acting, still not something I'm sure I would watch again. However, I am glad I at least saw it.
- DirectorRyûhei KitamuraStarsVinnie JonesBradley CooperLeslie BibbA photographer's obsessive pursuit of dark subject matter leads him into the path of a serial killer who stalks late night commuters, ultimately butchering them in the most gruesome ways.I had been meaning to watch this movie for a long time, but for some reason never got around to it. Now, I regret taking so long to see this. A little slow to start, and seemed to drag a bit in some parts, but the ending is definitely worth the wait. Such a great twist that I'm sure if I had realized at the time that it was based off of a Clive Barker short, would have been more obvious. Can't really say I dislike anything I've seen by Barker, so this is one for the ages.
- DirectorRoxanne BenjaminSofìa CarrilloKaryn KusamaStarsNatalie BrownJonathan WattonPeter DaCunhaThis all-female horror anthology features four dark tales from four fiercely talented women.Four short stories. Four unexplained mysterious happenings. Four great female writers/directors. And, to top it all off, a creepy as hell montage of weird between each sequence that I would love to see as a creepy short itself. I will definitely have to look into these women and see what else they have created.
- DirectorAndré ØvredalStarsOtto JespersenRobert StoltenbergKnut NærumA group of students investigates a series of mysterious bear killings, but learns that there are much more dangerous things going on. They start to follow a mysterious hunter, learning that he is actually a troll hunter.Norwegian found footage film. Be ready to read the subtitles, but please, don't let that discourage you! This was a great little flick and a great companion to all the other great found footage films that have been coming out over the last few years. A style of film I think had a bit of a rocky start, but once it found it's grove, has proved to be a genera up for the fight. Always helps to keep you involved as if you were there rather than just watching it. Great design, both with the trolls and the story, that gives a rich background to the situation. This will be one to watch again.
- DirectorDrew GabreskiStarsBrian KrauseJaimi PaigeLouis HerthumIn order to protect his family, Dr. John Chambers must solve the town's deadly secret, which lives within the darkest shadows of the night.Good story and idea. Kinda campy acting, but it works. I liked the idea of the creatures that can't be seen by most taking children into the woods. Leaving mystery in the end helped my opinion of this flick to bump it up another star.
- DirectorEdward Evers-SwindellStarsSiwan MorrisGareth David-LloydJoanna IgnaczewskaThe spirit of a murdered girl returns with a message for the staff of a local radio station. This one popped up as a recommendation after watching Be Afraid. British flick about a small radio station that as a last broadcast before being shut down, hires a medium and talks with a spirit on the air. Kinda confusing at parts as there's a few different things going on at the same time, but that happens. Over all, not a terrible movie. Might give it another go somewhere down the line.
- DirectorJames WongStarsDevon SawaAli LarterKerr SmithAfter getting a premonition about a plane crash on his school trip, Alex, a student saves a few of his classmates. However, their situation gets complicated when death starts chasing them.If this wasn't a modern classic as soon as it came out I don't know what is. Combining the idea of premonitions with avoiding death and then having to fight back death himself as he tries to clean up the mess and restore order. Hadn't seen this in a long time, forgot a lot of the little parts in between, so it was a good refresher. And it's always good to see the Candyman, Tony Todd in a movie as a creepy guy.
(Side note: Candyman probably won't quite make this list this time, but we can put it on the honorable mention as it was one I was thinking about if time allowed.) - DirectorDavid R. EllisStarsA.J. CookAli LarterTony ToddDeath is stalking Kimberly Corman and multiple survivors of a deadly highway accident.Figured, what the hell. Already watched the first one. This was a great sequel to say the least. Adding more to the story and design from the first to bring a wider understanding of what the events of the first movie brought to others in the world.
- DirectorK.C. BascombeStarsKevin ZegersJesse JamesRachel SkarstenTwelve year old Ryan Billings has been diagnosed with an acute fear of the dark. He spends each night lying awake in torment, waiting and watching as the evil in the darkness grows stronger, feeding off his fear. His older brother Dale, suspects that there is nothing wrong with Ryan and that this is just a ploy for more attention. Regardless, he promises to watch over his little brother as their parents head off to a party for the night. Outside a storm rages and when the power goes out, darkness envelops the house. Ryan knows that tonight the evil has finally come to claim him. Dale desperately tries everything to try and calm him down, until the horrors in the dark make him realize Ryan had good reason to be so afraid! This little straight to DVD gem I found back probably in 2005/6 at a movie rental place. Picked it up, put it in, loved it. Small cast and really only takes place inside the family home, but that's all it needs. The story, effects, acting, little bits of detail or placement in the home to make something creepy that may not normally be. It's all great. Especially the evil beings and how they're put together. I had been thinking and meaning to re-watch this one awhile back, but then decided it should happen this month. Give it a go!
