There are many mutual difference between the books and the films. But the one that stands out the most is the complete reconfiguration of Toothless. Going from a small green Terrible Terror, to the larger black Night Fury we see today. DeBlois and Sanders liked this idea as it allowed them to go beyond the island of Berk, and to create the dragon rider aspect for the human characters. Thus came along the other dragons such as Stormfly, Barf & Belch, Hookfang, and Meatlug. To which Cowell approved and was impressed with when she saw the film.
