Did You Know They Have An Oscar?

A list of 25 actors, actresses and singers who have surprisingly (to me anyway) garnered the most coveted award in the film industry. My reasons for these people being on the list are not necessarily because I don't rate them as actors (some are here because of that) but simply because I was genuinely surprised they have an Oscar.

1. Cher

Actress | Moonstruck

The beat goes on ... and on ... and as strong as ever for this superstar entertainer who has well surpassed the half-century mark while improbably transforming herself from an artificial, glossy "flashionplate" singer into a serious, Oscar-worthy, dramatic actress ... and back again! With more ups ...

I never knew Cher for anything more than being a former singer who occasionally made the headlines for erratic behaviour but apparently she was once an actress and a good one too. She won the Oscar for best actress in a leading role back in 1988.

2. Nicolas Cage

Actor | Face/Off

Nicolas Cage was born Nicolas Kim Coppola in Long Beach, California, the son of comparative literature professor August Coppola (whose brother is director Francis Ford Coppola) and dancer/choreographer Joy Vogelsang. He is of Italian (father) and Polish and German (mother) descent. Cage changed his...

Growing up I thought Nicolas Cage was one of the best actors out there. Con Air, The Rock, Gone In Sixty Seconds to name a few were some of my favourite movies. However as the years have passed my estimations of him have plummeted so much so that I almost avoid any movie he appears in. However way back in the day, 1996 to be exact, he was actually impressive enough to get an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

3. Mo'Nique

Actress | Precious

Mo'Nique received a standing ovation when she stepped on stage for the first time in her hometown of Baltimore, Maryland, giving her confidence to pursue a career as a stand-up comedian. After numerous stand-up performances, she took a leap forward with one of the starring roles in The Parkers (...

First let me say I've never seen Precious and Mo'nique's inclusion here has nothing to do with whether or not she deserved her Oscar. She's simply here because I always knew her as that funny lady on that kids tv show, certainly not as an Oscar winner. Fair play to her though.

4. Kim Basinger

Actress | L.A. Confidential

Kim Basinger was born December 8, 1953, in Athens, Georgia, the third of five children. Both her parents had been in entertainment, her dad had played big-band jazz, and her mother had performed water ballet in several Esther Williams movies. Kim was introspective, from her father's side. As a ...

One of the most beautiful actresses in Hollywood in her day and not a bad actress but I never had her up there with the best. Surprised to see she has an Oscar as I always felt a lot of her success was due to her looks. Guess I was wrong.

5. Anna Paquin

Actress | The Piano

Anna Paquin is the first millennial to have received an Academy Award nomination for acting, and the first to win.

She was born on July 24, 1982 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, to Mary (Brophy), an English teacher from Wellington, New Zealand, and Brian Paquin, a Canadian phys-ed teacher. Anna moved ...

Known more for her role in True Blood, or possibly as Rogue in X-Men, Anna Paquin actually came to the fore when she was just 12 years old, in The Piano, winning the academy award for Best Supporting Actress.

6. Adrien Brody

Actor | The Pianist

Adrien Nicholas Brody was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York, the only child of retired history professor Elliot Brody and Hungarian-born photographer Sylvia Plachy. He accompanied his mother on assignments for the Village Voice, and credits her with making him feel comfortable in front of the ...

Won his Oscar in 2003 for an extraordinary lead performance in The Pianist but I almost forget how good this guy is because I've barely seen him since and anything I have seen hasn't nearly matched up to that great achievement. (I have heard he is good in Detachment though so I'll have to check that out sometime)

7. Catherine Zeta-Jones

Actress | Chicago

Catherine Zeta-Jones was born September 25, 1969 in Swansea, Wales (and raised in the nearby town of Mumbles), the only daughter of Patricia (nee Fair) and David James "Dai" Jones, who formerly owned a sweet factory. She attended Dumbarton House School (Swansea). Her father (the son of Bertram (...

Another lady who I feel has come a long way due to her great looks but I must admit she was very good in Chicago (she was up against Meryl Streep that year). But I often struggle to take those certain seriously when it comes to a performance requiring proper acting, when they are usually just on the screen as eye candy. Catherine has managed to make the transition very well however.

8. Cuba Gooding Jr.

Actor | Jerry Maguire

Cuba Gooding Jr. was born on January 2, 1968, in The Bronx, New York. His mother, Shirley (Sullivan), was a backup singer for The Sweethearts. His father, Cuba Gooding, was the lead vocalist for the R&B group The Main Ingredient, which had a hit with the song "Everybody Plays The Fool". His ...

Most people aren't too surprised to hear he won an Oscar because everyone remembers that fantastic, ecstatic acceptance speech. However when I review his career since Jerry Maguire it shocks me that he was once one of the best. He has been in some awful movies since (Boat Trip, Shadowboxer, Way of War to name a few) and hasn't come close to a similar performance.

9. Goldie Hawn

Actress | Private Benjamin

Goldie Jeanne Hawn was born November 21, 1945 in Washington, D.C. and raised in Takoma Park, Maryland to Laura Hawn, a jewelry shop/dance school owner & Rut Hawn, a band musician. She has a sister, Patti Hawn, and a brother, Edward, who died in infancy before her birth. She was raised in the Jewish...

I must admit I've always had a thing for Goldie Hawn! Even now in her late 60's she's still a looker but I never knew her for much of an actress. To be honest though I have never really seen much of her movies either. Still, I was surprised to see she has an Oscar, which she won back in 1970!

10. Billy Bob Thornton

Actor | Sling Blade

Billy Bob Thornton was born on August 4, 1955 in Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Virginia Roberta (Faulkner), a psychic, and William Raymond (Billy Ray) Thornton, an educator, high school history teacher, and basketball coach (now deceased). He is the older brother of James Donald (Jimmy Don) (born in ...

I enjoy Billy Bob Thornton movies for the most part. However he has never won an Oscar for acting. His academy award was for writing a screenplay (Sling Blade), based on his own short story! Very impressive and surprising.

11. Jamie Foxx

Actor | Collateral

Jamie Foxx is an American actor, singer and comedian. He won an Academy Award for Best Actor, BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role, and Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, for his work in the biographical film Ray (2004). The same year, he was nominated for the Academy...

Never seen Jamie Foxx as an actor in the highest echelons but do enjoy watching him in movies. I always think of "Steamin' Willie Beamen" when I think of him. He got his Oscar in 2005 for his portrayal as Charles Ray.

12. Angelina Jolie

Actress | Maleficent

Angelina Jolie is an Academy Award-winning actress who rose to fame after her role in Girl, Interrupted (1999), playing the title role in the "Lara Croft" blockbuster movies, as well as Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005), Wanted (2008), Salt (2010) and Maleficent (2014). Off-screen, Jolie has become ...

Another beauty but there is no doubting her acting prowess. A great actress and felt she should have won in 2009 for her role in Changling. I only recently realised though that she already had an Oscar from 2000 for her performance in Girl, Interrupted.

13. Liza Minnelli

Soundtrack | Cabaret

Liza Minnelli was born on March 12, 1946, the daughter of Judy Garland and movie director Vincente Minnelli. She was practically raised at MGM studios while her parents worked long hours there and she made her film debut at 14 months of age in the movie In the Good Old Summertime (1949). Her ...

I'm a big fan of Arrested Development and this is the only place I can think of where I've seen Liza Minnelli act but back in 1973 she actually won the Oscar for Best Lead Actress.

14. Kevin Kline

Actor | Wild Wild West

Kevin Kline was born in St. Louis, Missouri, to Margaret and Robert Joseph Kline, who owned several stores. His father was of German Jewish descent and his mother was of Irish ancestry. After attending Indiana University in Bloomington, Kline studied at the Juilliard School in New York. In 1972, ...

I always thought of Kevin Kline as a quirky, likable actor but I've rarely seen him play the type of role that attracts Oscar attention but then again I have yet to watch A Fish Called Wanda in which Kevin Kline performs so well that he landed himself the award for Best Supporting Actor.

15. Emma Thompson

Actress | Sense and Sensibility

Emma Thompson was born on April 15, 1959 in Paddington, London, into a family of actors - father Eric Thompson and mother Phyllida Law, who has co-starred with Thompson in several films. Her sister, Sophie Thompson, is an actor as well. Her father was English-born and her mother is Scottish-born. ...

Another great actress, who has actually won an Oscar for writing, rather than acting. Some people are just multi-talented I guess!

16. Reese Witherspoon

Producer | Wild

Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon was born on March 22, 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Betty Witherspoon, a registered nurse & John Draper Witherspoon, a military surgeon. Reese spent the first 4 years of her life in Wiesbaden, Hesse, Germany, where her father served as a lieutenant colonel in the ...

Her Oscar for her performance in Walk the Line was well deserved but again she is another performer who rarely seems to take on such riveting roles.

17. Marisa Tomei

Actress | My Cousin Vinny

Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, to Patricia "Addie" (Bianchi), a teacher of English, and Gary Tomei, a lawyer, both of Italian descent. Marisa has a brother, actor Adam Tomei. As a child, Marisa's mother frequently corrected her speech as to eliminate her heavy ...

Many would argue that she should have at least two Oscars to her name but I had never really took note of her talents until I seen her in The Wrestler. She gained her Oscar 15 years prior to that performance however in her supporting role in My Cousin Vinny.

18. Kathy Bates

Actress | Misery

Multi-talented, multi-award-winning actress Kathleen (Doyle) Bates was born on June 28, 1948, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. She is the youngest of three girls born to Bertye Kathleen (Talbot), a homemaker, and Langdon Doyle Bates, a mechanical engineer. Her grandfather was author Finis L. Bates...

Another actress who I always saw as a light-hearted enjoyable actress to watch but she has put on her acting shoes more than once with three Academy Award nominations and one win, for a leading role!

19. Ben Affleck

Producer | Argo

Benjamin Géza "Ben" Affleck-Boldt was born on August 15, 1972 in Berkeley, California and raised in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to mother Chris Anne (Boldt), a school teacher, and father Timothy Byers "Tim" Affleck, a social worker. Ben has a younger brother, actor Casey Affleck, who was born in 1975...

He actually has two Oscars now, both of which he shares with others. The most recent was for his overseeing of Argo which won Best Picture in 2013. However it was his first Oscar for co-writing Good Will Hunting that surprises me. A brilliant, uplifting, intelligent movie co-written by Ben, a relatively unknown young actor at the time that shot to blockbuster stardom soon after.

20. Eminem

Soundtrack | 8 Mile

Eminem was born Marshall Bruce Mathers III in St. Joseph, Missouri, to Deborah R. (Nelson) and Marshall Bruce Mathers, Jr., who were in a band together, Daddy Warbucks. He is of English, as well as some German, Scottish, and Swiss-German, ancestry. Marshall spent his early childhood being shoved ...

His Oscar was for Best Original Song, not acting, but not many may realise that he actually has one. Quite an achievement for the Detroit rapper.

21. Frances McDormand

Actress | Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Frances Louise McDormand was born on June 23, 1957, in Gibson City, Illinois. She was adopted by Canadian-born parents Noreen Eloise (Nickleson), a nurse from Ontario, and Rev. Vernon Weir McDormand, a Disciples of Christ minister from Nova Scotia, who raised her in the suburbs of Pittsburgh. She ...

A fine actress but I rarely see her much in a potential Oscar winning role. Admittedly that may be my fault seeing as she has four nominations! (Another surprise to me). That Oscar winning role did come along in 1997 when she won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Fargo.

22. Joe Pesci

Actor | Goodfellas

Compact Italian-American actor Joe Pesci was born February 9, 1943 in Newark, New Jersey, to Mary (Mesce), a part-time barber, and Angelo Pesci, a bartender and forklift driver. Pesci first broke into entertainment as a child actor, and by the mid-1950s, was starring on the series "Star Time Kids"....

Certainly deserved his Oscar for playing a slightly psychotic gangster in Goodfellas but I always think of him as the token funny guy in films (I'm thinking lethal weapon, home alone etc) which is why his Oscar glory is kinda surprising.

23. Whoopi Goldberg

Actress | Ghost

Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson in the Chelsea section of Manhattan on November 13, 1955. Her mother, Emma (Harris), was a teacher and a nurse, and her father, Robert James Johnson, Jr., was a clergyman. Whoopi's recent ancestors were from Georgia, Florida, and Virginia. She worked in...

I have never been overawed by a performance by Whoopi Goldberg and have always seen her as more of a comedy actress than anything else but in 1990 she managed to act her socks off and garner that most sought after award.

24. Bruce Springsteen

Soundtrack | Blinded by the Light

Bruce Frederick Joseph Springsteen was born September 23, 1949 in Long Branch, New Jersey, USA. His father, Douglas Frederick Springsteen, worked as a bus driver, and was of Irish and Dutch ancestry. His mother, Adele Ann (Zerilli), worked as a legal secretary, and was of Italian descent. He has an...

The living legend that is The Boss. One of the greatest musicians of all time, I suppose I shouldn't be so surprised that he has an Oscar too; for Best Original Song, in Philadelphia.

25. Maggie Smith

Actress | Gosford Park

One of the world's most famous and distinguished actresses, Dame Maggie Smith was born Margaret Natalie Smith in Essex. Her Scottish mother, Margaret (Hutton), worked as a secretary, and her English father, Nathaniel Smith, was a teacher at Oxford University. Smith has been married twice: to actor ...

A great actress, no doubt, but known more to me for her roles in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter. So it was a bit of a surprise when I found out she actually won her first Oscar way back in 1969! And then another in 1978! Who knew?
