I always compare the live action adaptations to the anime series. I have usually watched the animated series first. Major scenes were rewritten, some things were omitted, which I expected. My expectations were a little high for this adaptation. I enjoyed the anime, a lot. I found the rewrites in this movie to be disjointed and difficult to connect with. Scenes and critical plot elements were so different from the anime, I felt like I was watching something unrelated. The movie might be more enjoyable for someone who hasn't seen the anime.

I suggest reading the manga this is adapted from. It is a really involved, emotional romantic story. The animated short and these movies don't do it justice. I'm not a fan of this movie or it's sequel. I placed it on my list in hopes some may decide to read the manga and enjoy the original story.

I suggest reading the manga if you would like to understand and appreciate this story.
