I prefer the PC version since its more complete and easier to mod, download pre-built worlds and create your own textures. The downside is that on PC, you will require several computers to play since there is no split screen. Consoles do have split screen option. Spend hours building together as a family, or challenge nature in survival mode. Minecraft is more a toy than a video game, amazing achievement in game design.

This game is lots of fun to play cooperatively, it does not matter if some players have much more skill than others, the game is still fun for all. There is a soccer minigame that is hilarious and serve to when you want to do a little competition. The musical levels are a jewel in game design.

Any Lego game can be on this list. I am including the Complete Saga since it is one of the best and is also great for any age group, even the little ones will enjoy those funny cut scenes. Plays cooperatively for two players.
This game is only available on PC. Plays cooperatively on shared screen up to 4 players. The spellcasting system is ingenious. There are also some competitive game modes, but I recommend the cooperative play for families.
5. Gauntlet (2014 Video Game)

I wanted to close the list with a fighting game, if you don't have Wii U then you can try Street Fighter series, Dragonball Z series or Naruto series. Other fighting games may be too violent for kids. Super Smash Bros. is great because it allows for multiple players fighting at the same time, I think even 5 players can share the screen. It also allows for creating you own arenas.
