President Obama recently awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for the final time to a group during a ceremony at the White House. The Medal is the highest civilian of the US and recognizes those people who have made "an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors".
