5/5 - A triumph of storytelling over budget. A very imersive plot, with great characters and even greater performances. Each episode moves the story forward while presenting a sub-plot and setting of its own. If one were to find fault in this serial: the Doctor and especially the companions are somewhat underused but they make each of their scenes count as a result, and the conclusion may be slightly rushed.

Votes: 540

4/5 - Excellent first two parts, very good last two parts, it's only in the middle that the momentum of the story is lost. All the characters are very well written and performed, and always act in an intelligent or relatable manner. The director also had some fun with interesting shot composition and lighting in the beginning and end.

As the newly regenerated Doctor arrives on Earth, so does the Nestene.

Director: Derek Martinus | Stars: Jon Pertwee, Caroline John, Nicholas Courtney, Hugh Burden

Votes: 982

3/5 - One of the best introductions to any Doctor, and it looks beautiful being shot on film. After a fun first part, what holds back the story is the very archetypal plot. However this was the first story of that kind, which makes it special.

52. Doctor Who (1963–1989)

The Doctor and Liz are summoned to the Wenley Moor Research Centre by the Brigadier, after several staff members suffer nervous breakdowns.

Director: Timothy Combe | Stars: Jon Pertwee, Caroline John, Nicholas Courtney, Fulton Mackay

Votes: 724

2/5 - A solid and epic story and with interesting -if blunt- ideas, that is brought down by static and inactive secondary characters, overbearing music and too much padding. This would have fared between as a 5 or 6-parter, or by giving the many characters more motivation or wit.

53. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: The Ambassadors of Death: Episode 1 (1970)

Director: Douglas Camfield | Stars: Jon Pertwee, Caroline John, Nicholas Courtney, Olaf Pooley

Votes: 761

4/5 - The concept is very entertaining and the action fun. However as usual with long 3rd Doctor stories, some episodes feel unnecessary and it lacks a bit of humor.

Episode: Terror of the Autons: Episode One (1971)

When a Nestene Energy Unit is stolen and a radio telescope sabotaged, the Doctor is contacted by a Time Lord who tells him his old rival the Master is responsible.

Director: Barry Letts | Stars: Jon Pertwee, Nicholas Courtney, Roger Delgado, Katy Manning

Votes: 694

3/5 - Great introduction for the Master and Jo Grant, however the plot is rehashed from Spearhead From Space. The chroma keying is unusually bad, but the Autons are well shot during the location segements. Only the ending is really rushed, putting into question the smarts of the Master and the whole concept behind the story.

4/5 The 5-parter format does wonders for this unusally fast-paced (for the era) story. While it slows down in the second half, we still get to enjoy the creative effects and designs and the overall visual richness of this serial. There are also a few good secondary characters with their own subplots. which helps with the pace at the beginning. The only issue is the portrayal of Jo's character, who is a bit too passive at this point in the show. This makes the Doctor seem too patronizing and does not bring out interesting interactions.

3/5 - A solid update on the Silurian concept introduced the previous season. The serial would have fared better had it been their original introduction, but the tighter plot, dynamic direction, and memorable characters make this one the superior story. The music is still too experimental and a not much happens in the middle, but it remains manageable as a story.

4/5 - Intense and inventive story with some strong character moments and underlying themes. Terry Nation delivers another epic. For once the special effects seem to reach their desired intent and the crew managed to have a variety of gags. Katy Manning keeps shining this season and holds her own. Rarely has a 6-parter from the era felt so short.

Votes: 644

4/5 - Excellent "UNIT" story and a nice conclusion to the season. Some of the characters are a bit undevelopped for their purposes in the plot but the special effects are fun -if a bit too ambitious- and there is a good deal of humour inserted in the writing. The story does not linger in one place and the length feels earned.

3/5 - Somewhat infamous in the Hinchcliffe era, this is nevertheless a decent serial. The plot is a precursor to more realized alien vs alien vs humans stories that would arrive in the mid-eighties. The use of the Ark in Space sets does not make the story feel cheap and all the location footage is neat. The music is also stand-out and the script a few good lines for Tom Baker. The story itself is not impressive, nor is the portrayal of the cybermen.

4/5 - The first half of the story is very intriguing and good-looking. It runs out of story by the end of part 3 but the closing moments of the final part are very well written and performed.

5/5 - This story manages to turn up the violence and scares without feeling too needlessly edgy. In fact the first two parts often rely on the dry and dark humor of Robert Holmes, while part 3 is mostly atmospheric and a fantastic change of pace for the show. The final part is a bit more by-the-numbers but safely leads the plot to its conclusion.

89. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: The Face of Evil: Part One (1977)

TV-PG | 25 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

Director: Pennant Roberts | Stars: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, David Garfield, Victor Lucas

Votes: 567

4/5 - Not the tightest of plot, and some surprisingly silly elements for this era of the show, the creativity and style of this serial noneless make it worthy. While the episodes can feel disjointed in the second half, there is an intensity running through it all, anchored by the great performances and memorable lines from Leela and the Doctor.

90. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: The Robots of Death: Part One (1977)

TV-Y | 24 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

Votes: 787

4/5 - While this is on of the most memorable serials and some the best work on design that the show has known, it is slightly underwhelming on subsequent viewings. The mystery plot is not the most compelling and the acting can be hit-or-miss, but maybe it is because every else works so well.

91. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: The Talons of Weng-Chiang: Part One (1977)

TV-Y | 25 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

The Doctor and Leela land in Victorian London, and find themselves in the middle of missing girls, mutilated bodies, and vicious Chinese gangs. The Palace theater, presenting hypnotist Li H'sen Chang seems to be at the center of it all.

Director: David Maloney | Stars: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, John Bennett, Christopher Benjamin

Votes: 811

4/5 - The most fast-paced and intense of 6-parters, there are a couple of elements that have not aged so well and hold it back. Despite these flaws, this is incredibly well written and produced, and a great last hurrah for the Hinchcliffe era.

92. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: Horror of Fang Rock: Part One (1977)

TV-Y | 25 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

The TARDIS lands near an isolated rocky island lighthouse just after a comet strikes the nearby sea and a sudden chilling fog rolls in. Soon after, electrical problems take hold of the generator and one of the keepers dies mysteriously.

Director: Paddy Russell | Stars: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Colin Douglas, John Abbott

Votes: 662

4/5 - A reassuring take on the show after the departure of its most successul showrunner. The characters are fantastic (showing the direction the writing would take in the next 3 years) and the tone suitably dark. Some of the effects don't look so great but the sets and costume do. Only the cliffhangers are really strange and sometimes underwhelming.

93. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: The Invisible Enemy: Part One (1977)

TV-PG | 23 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

In the year 5000 AD a three-man crew arrive on the planet Titan but unknowingly become hosts for an alien virus that turns them hostile. Picking up a distress signal in the Tardis, the Doctor and Leela head to the planet to investigate.

Director: Derrick Goodwin | Stars: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Michael Sheard, Brian Grellis

Votes: 483

3/5 - The end of a winning streak for the show depending on how you look at it. This story trades the horror tone established in the Tom Baker era so far for a more action-adventure feel. For better or for worse, this serial oscillates between intentionally and unintentionally funny, with cheap but charming special effects.

94. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: Image of the Fendahl: Part One (1977)

TV-PG | 25 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

Archeologists near a reputedly haunted woods use a time scanner to explore the history of a sinister 12 million year old skull, creating a hole in time that attracts the Doctor's attention.

Director: George Spenton-Foster | Stars: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Wanda Ventham, Daphne Heard

Votes: 486

4/5 - Very talky and pretty dense with lore, this remains a well executed and involving story. Plenty of sweet moments involving Leela or the secondary characters, which are all memorable. The story requires you largely suspend your disbelief, but makes up for it with great direction and style, especially during the film sequences.

95. Doctor Who (1963–1989)
Episode: The Sun Makers: Part One (1977)

TV-PG | 25 min | Adventure, Drama, Family

The Doctor and Leela land on Pluto in the far future and discover that it's inhabited by humans. Leaving K9 in the Tardis, the pair meet a man contemplating suicide after he's unable to pay his father's "death tax".

Director: Pennant Roberts | Stars: Tom Baker, Louise Jameson, Richard Leech, Jonina Scott

Votes: 497

4/5 - This one gets better on subsequent viewings. It manages to be full of wit, absurdism and silliness while keeping an eye on all of the characters' motivations and the stakes. This feels like a much lighter take on a Brazil-like distopia that never feels depressing. The music is the weak point, really starting the trend of less tuneful and more generic compositions from Dudley Simpson, who never quite got the figured out how to match the more casual tone of the show from 1977 onwards (with the exception of City of Death). Sometimes silence would enhance the scenes, especially given the very spirited and amusing performances from all of the cast.

2/5 - Not as bad as it may seem, although it remains too dry and generic after the first part. Said first part looks pretty good, while the remainder is an eye-sore, being shot almost entirely in front of blue screens. They almost pull it off but it's just not worth the effort.
