Actors/Actresses in Mystery Series
by the lioness | created - 18 Jan 2022 | updated - 18 Feb 2022 | PublicNot only do I love a good whodunit, I also enjoy a good mystery series as well. Beginning in the late 20's and lasting until the late 40's, many of the major film studios created mystery series around some of the most popular fictional detectives. Many of the actors appearing in these series were some of the most popular performers of the Golden Era. In many cases, some of these actors became stars as a result. For this list, these are my favorite performers who appeared in their own mystery series/franchises, which were created and released during the Golden Era of Hollywood.
1. Basil Rathbone
Actor | The Adventures of Robin Hood
Basil Rathbone was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1892, but three years later his family was forced to flee the country because his father was accused by the Boers of being a British spy at a time when Dutch-British conflicts were leading to the Boer War. The Rathbones escaped to England, ...
For many fans of mystery films, Rathbone is the quintessential Sherlock Holmes. He and his co-star, Nigel Bruce, would appear in a total of 14 films as Holmes and Watson. In addition, when radio became a new medium, Rathbone and Bruce would reprise their roles respectively.
2. Nigel Bruce
Actor | Rebecca
Nigel was, from the beginning, typecast as bumbling English aristocrats, military types or drawing room society snobs and, within the narrow parameters of his range, he was very, very good at playing these parts. Nigel Bruce was born in Mexico, where his father, Sir William W. Bruce, worked as an ...
As there is no other Sherlock Holmes for me, there is also no other Dr. Watson than Nigel Bruce. While Bruce would play second-fiddle to Rathbone, the two were comparable in their roles. Note, when Rathbone grew tired of playing Sherlock Holmes on the radio, Bruce continued in his role as Dr. Watson.
3. Warner Oland
Actor | The Black Camel
Warner Oland was born Johan Verner Olund in the small village of Nyby in Bjurholm parish in the county of Vasterbotten, Sweden, on October 3, 1879. Bjurholm is situated about 60 kilometers outside the town of Umea. His family emigrated to the US on October 15, 1892. His father Jonas was a ...
When Hollywood decided to make a film making Lt. Charlie Chan of Honolulu the center of the plot, Warner Oland became the first European actor to play Chan. Oland would bring Charlie Chan into the sound era. When Oland died in 1938, he played Chan for a total of 16 times.
4. Sidney Toler
Actor | Charlie Chan at Treasure Island
The son of Colonel H.G. Toler, breeder of trotting horses, Sidney Toler acted on stage by the time he was seven years old. He was an established star of the theater by the 1890s, long before his career in motion pictures began. He was also active as a playwright and had a good enough voice to be ...
When actor Warner Oland died in 1938, 20th Century Fox cast veteran actor Sidney Toler into the role of Lt. Chan. When Fox decided to streamline their film offerings, Toler bought the rights to the franchise and brought it over to Monogram Pictures, a Poverty Row studio, to continue the franchise. Toler would continue to play Charlie Chan until his death in 1947. By his time of death, Toler would play Chan for a record total of 22 films. It should be noted that no other actor has yet to top this record playing any character in a film series.
5. William Powell
Actor | The Thin Man
William Powell was on the New York stage by 1912, but it would be ten years before his film career would begin. In 1924 he went to Paramount Pictures, where he was employed for the next seven years. During that time, he played in a number of interesting films, but stardom was elusive. He did ...
Charming and debonair actor William Powell is noted for his role as former detective, Nick Charles. During the 30's and the 40's, Powell played Nick Charles six times. There may have been other actors in the role but none can match William Powell.
6. Myrna Loy
Actress | The Thin Man
Myrna Williams, later to become Myrna Loy, was born on August 2, 1905 in Helena, Montana. Her father was the youngest person ever elected to the Montana State legislature. Later on her family moved to Radersburg where she spent her youth on a cattle ranch. At the age of 13, Myrna's father died of ...
Ms. Loy, like Powell, is famous for her appearance in the six Thin Man films. She was Nora, the wife of Nick Charles. While Ms. Loy has a prolific career that spanned nearly sixty years, she will always be remembered as Nora.
7. George Sanders
Actor | All About Eve
George Sanders was born of English parents in St. Petersburg, Russia. He worked in a Birmingham textile mill, in the tobacco business and as a writer in advertising. He entered show business in London as a chorus boy, going from there to cabaret, radio and theatrical understudy. His film debut, in ...
During the career of Oscar winner George Sanders, he developed a reputation for playing cads on the screen. One of the reasons for this could be due to his turn as Gay Laurence, aka The Falcon. Laurence was also known as The Saint. Gay Laurence was a cad and a former thief, who would find himself in situations where he needed to prove his innocence. Sanders only played the Falcon four times. Eventually, when Sanders decided to move on to other film roles, his replacement was actor Tom Conway; his real-life brother. RKO Radio, the studio behind the Falcon series, played that up in the film, "The Falcon's Brother."
8. Edna May Oliver
Actress | Penguin Pool Murder
She was born Edna May Nutter, a child of solid New England stock, on 9th November 1883 in Malden, Massachusetts. The daughter of Ida May and Charles Edward Nutter, Edna was a descendant of the 2nd American president John Adams and his son, the 6th American president John Quincy Adams. In addition, ...
In 1932, Miss Oliver would become the first woman to head her own mystery series. She plays Miss Hildegarde Martha Withers, a teacher who discovers a body floating in a pool of penguins, at an aquarium. She would go on to do two other films as Miss Withers. Unfortunately, Miss Oliver only did a total of three films in this series as Ms. Withers.
9. Edward Arnold
Actor | You Can't Take It with You
Edward Arnold was born as Gunther Edward Arnold Schneider in 1890, on the Lower East Side of New York City, the son of German immigrants, Elizabeth (Ohse) and Carl Schneider. Arnold began his acting career on the New York stage and became a film actor in 1916. A burly man with a commanding style ...
Edward Arnold played a very unusual character that resulted in a two-picture series. He played blind detective Duncan "Mac" Maclain in the films, "Eyes in the Night" and "The Hidden Eye". The only thing I didn't like about this series is its lifespan- it was too short. Arnold is amazing as Det. Maclain and so is his companion, his seeing eye dog Friday!
10. Walter Pidgeon
Actor | Forbidden Planet
Walter Pidgeon, a handsome, tall and dark-haired man, began his career studying voice at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. He then did theater, mainly stage musicals. He went to Hollywood in the early 1920s, where he made silent films, including Mannequin (1926) and Sumuru (1927). ...
Another prolific actor that appeared in a mystery series is Walter Pidgeon. During his long and prolific film career, Pidgeon played detective Nick Carter. In the late 30's and into the early 40's, Pidgeon played Detective Carter in a total of three films.
11. Bonita Granville
Actress | Now, Voyager
Daughter of Bernard Granville, Bonita Granville was born into an acting family. It's not surprising that she herself became a child actor, first on the stage and, at the age of 9, debuting in movies in Westward Passage (1932). She was regularly cast as a naughty little girl, as in These Three (1936)...
Ms. Granville earns a place on this list for starring as Nancy Drew, Detective. Ms. Granville is the first actress in the history of cinema to play Nancy Drew. Not only is she the first teenager to play the character on the big screen, she's also the youngest person to ever star in a mystery series for the big screen. Ms. Granville would play Nancy Drew a total of four times.
