Nostalgia reigns supreme this holiday season with the Peacock limited series continuation of director/writer Malcolm D. Lee’s successful “The Best Man” film franchise. In a rarity for most networks — streaming, broadcast, or otherwise — that Lee, whose more recent hits include Tiffany Haddish’s breakout “Girls Trip,” got all his original stars from both the 1999 film “The Best Man” and its 2013 sequel “The Best Man Holiday” to revive their characters once again for eight episodes.
Considering that those stars aren’t exactly waiting by the phone, that is quite a feat, especially when other less ambitious efforts (“Friends: The Reunion” anyone?) haven’t quite gone as smoothly. With a cast that includes Morris Chestnut, Taye Diggs (“All American”), Regina Hall Terence Howard, Sanaa Lathan, Nia Long (“NCIS: Los Angeles”), and Harold Perrineau, it’s more than impressive. The fact that they are all here — including Lee himself and Melissa De Sousa,...

For fans of a specific period of Black cinema, Peacock’s “The Best Man: The Final Chapters” is an epic, end-of-an-era conclusion on par with “Avengers: Endgame.” The specific period spans from roughly 1990 to 2000, when the Black romantic comedy grew into its power. The confluence of two successful movements — Black romantic fiction and Black indie cinema — birthed such classics as “Love Jones,” “Brown Sugar,” and “Love and Basketball,” among others.
Malcolm D. Lee’s “The Best Man” series has grown an outsize influence among Black rom-com aficionados because it has acted as a living history of the subgenre. Its core ensemble — Taye Diggs, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Harold Perrineau, Monica Calhoun and Melissa DeSousa — is a true murderers’ row of the era. They’ve spent their careers acting together in a raft of films, and Black rom-com fans that don’t count the original “Best Man...

Harper Stewart, the ambitious, obstinate protagonist of Malcolm D. Lee’s The Best Man franchise, has always had questionable decision-making skills and terrible timing.
In the eponymous 1999 film, the young writer, played by Taye Diggs, avoids telling his best friend Lance (Morris Chestnut) that he slept with his fiancée (Monica Calhoun) in college until days before the couple’s wedding (in which Harper is the best man). The news threatens both the nuptials and the stability of the friend group, forcing Harper to work some eleventh-hour magic. In The Best Man Holiday (2013), more after-school special than its predecessor, Harper surreptitiously tries to convince a still angry Lance to hire him as a biographer while struggling to support his pregnant wife, Robyn (Sanaa Lathan).
The lessons Harper learns after each narrow win never seem to stick, and nowhere is that more evident than in...

It’s been 20 years since New Line Cinema released Gina Prince-Bythewood’s feature directorial debut, “Love & Basketball,” and the writer-director said that film — now a classic, especially among African American audiences — allowed her a kind of freedom she hasn’t seen since.
Produced by Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and Mule Filmworks, the film starred Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan as Quincy McCall and Monica Wright, childhood friends who fall in love as adults and share another all-consuming passion: basketball. Told largely from Monica’s perspective, this career-versus-love story continues to resonate.

We’re a little light on quantity at What to Watch this week but not on quality. And our newest contributor, Dave Canfield, has already handled today’s release of “All is Lost,” a film you really should add to whatever queue allows you to see quality films. When you’re done with that, pick one of these five. Ok, four. Ignore “Diana.” Please.

“The Returned: Season One”
Netflix landed a lot of press for the way they stormed the gates of the TV industry in 2013 but I think the story of The Sundance Channel’s evolution into a major player was under-reported. Jane Campion’s “The Top of the Lake” and the brilliant “Rectify” would have been enough but this import of a French series was actually their best program, and one of the best on TV overall.

One of the scenes in The Best Man Holiday that’s sure to be talked about (and enjoyed) is when the male cast members entertain their female counterparts with a performance of New Edition’s “Can You Stand the Rain.” Director Malcolm D. Lee sets up the scene, which has its roots in his own lip-synching days at Georgetown. “After dinner, Mia (played by Monica Calhoun), tells the guys that they are not going to have dessert until they do ‘air band.’ This catches them by surprise. She has the jackets, hats and outfits they had circa 1991, and they’re going to … Continue reading →

Back in 1999, Malcolm D. Lee brought us The Best Man, which, at the time, was a refreshing and somewhat unique picture that offered an African American audience characters to relate to and be inspired by, going against the detrimental stereotypes that so often infiltrate mainstream cinema. Now, 14 years on, the sequel The Best Man Holiday remains faithful to this positive representation, and with powerful films such as 12 Years a Slave and The Butler causing quite a stir at present, it’s a welcomed antidote to the aforementioned titles, to see successful black protagonists, as bestselling authors, football players and award winning producers.
Reuniting the fine ensemble cast from the first picture, these old college friends decide to get together to celebrate Christmas, in spite of the existing rivalries between them. Most damaged of all is the friendship between author Harper (Taye Diggs) and soon to be retired professional footballer Lance...

It took 14 years for Malcolm D. Lee to get his sequel to "The Best Man" into theaters, but now that "The Best Man Holiday" is wiping up at the box office, he's already in negotiations for a third "Best Man" flick.
Lee told HuffPost Black Voices, "It took two years from when I first presented it to the studio to get a green light," later adding, "If there's a demand for a third 'Best Man' it will not take 14 years. If it happens, it will not be that long of a stand. We're not doing 'Best Man: Nursing Home.'"
Well, that's definitely not going to be an issue, what with a $30M opening weekend that gave "Thor: The Dark World" a serious run for his Mjölnir. According to Deadline, Lee is attached to a project with Fox Searchlight, but we'd wager that he's chomping at...

Marvel Studios' yarn earns nearly $150m in Us and $332m globally but Catching Fire will be in cinemas for Thanskgiving
Thor makes hay
Marvel Studios' superhero yarn has not wasted its two-week window of opportunity between release and the launch (this week) of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.
Since it launched on 8 November, Thor: The Dark World has earned just under $150m (£93m) in North America and an extra $332m (£206m) internationally to bring the global haul to $480m (£297m) through Disney's distribution pipes.
The mighty hammer can still smash through another $100m (£62m) at the global box office, but the scion of Asgard's progress is likely to slow to a regal prowl once Catching Fire arrives on 22 November.
Best Man does his duty

Marvel's Thor: The Dark World stayed on well over the weekend to top the box office with $38.4 million despite losing Friday to Universal's The Best Man Holiday. The Thor sequel helmed by Alan Taylor and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins, among others, averaged $10,011 from 3,841 theaters, bringing its domestic cume past $146.9 million thus far. The Best Man Holiday turned in a strong per-theater average of $15,115 from 2,024 theaters, and looks set to carry on performing well during the week, making for a solid sophomore weekend to come. Starring in Malcolm D. Lee's comedy are Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Eddie Cibrian, Sanaa Lathan, Harold Perrineau, Nia Long, Melissa De Sousa, Regina Hall and Monica Calhoun. In third place, CBS Films' adult skewering comedy Last Vegas starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, added $8.86 million on this it's third weekend run,...

Box office movies this weekend: ‘Thor: The Dark World’ worldwide; ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ in Brazil; ‘The Best Man Holiday’ in the U.S. (photo: Taye Diggs in ‘The Best Man Holiday’) The big story at the global box office this weekend, November 15-17, 2013, is going to be once again Thor: The Dark World, which is expected to reach close to $450 million worldwide — more than two-thirds of that figure coming from outside North America. For comparison’s sake, Kenneth Branagh’s Thor 2011 ended its global run with $449.32 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. The weekend’s big international box office story is the debut of Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in Brazil, the week before it opens in North America and most other international markets. Why only Brazil? Friday was a national holiday ("Proclamation of the Republic") — in other words, that particular market...

Universal Pictures' The Best Man Holiday got off to an impressive start as it toppled superhero film Thor: The Dark World on Friday, grossing around $10.7 when compared to the $10.49 million brought in by the Thor sequel. While some are surprised by the total, we're not, as the film had the potential for a strong opening. Malcolm D. Lee directs the comedy which stars Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard, Morris Chestnut, Eddie Cibrian, Sanaa Lathan, Harold Perrineau, Nia Long, Melissa De Sousa, Regina Hall and Monica Calhoun. The film looks set to pull in around $32 million from 2,024 theaters come weekend estimate time. Disney's Thor: The Dark World starring Chris Hemsworth will show a bigger-than-anticipated drop on its second weekend run thanks to Best Man Holiday's strong gross. Pic should add in significantly bigger numbers on Saturday, and end off on top of the list...

I’m not kidding when I say I had no idea what I was in for when I sat down to view The Best Man Holiday. First, I didn’t know it was a sequel. And second, I’d never even heard of the first one – The Best Man (1999). But, you know what? Shame on me! Make no mistake; I’ll be curled up watching The Best Man Holiday’s predecessor on OnDemand come this weekend.
When you go see The Best Man Holiday, I recommend you bring tissues. Two boxes would be best. Bring a fan, too. Because, lady friends, it gets hot. There’s a lot of manly chest in this flick. (But, don’t worry, guys – there’s enough lingerie and football to go around.)
The movie opens with a series of flashbacks from The Best Man, surrounding the wedding of Mia and Lance (played by Monica Calhoun...

Chicago – Like a black “Big Chill,” the gang from the 1999 essential film “The Best Man” reunite to see old friends, celebrate the season, open old wounds and bury the past in a surprisingly serious yet emotionally spiritual sequel “The Best Man Holiday.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The writer/director Malcolm D. Lee is back to steer the effort, which keeps it from sliding into maudlin territory. There is the same fraternal give-and-take between the men in the story, but it is tempered with advancing middle age, leading into several transitions which the whole group must face. There is an unexpected religious element thrown in – from the most unlikely of sources – but somehow that works as well, keeping a balance within events that are seemingly spinning out of control. It’s good to see that all races and cultures can indulge in upper middle class pornography – the wealth and materialism on display is almost...

The Best Man Holiday, the sequel to 1999's beloved dramedy The Best Man, is out this weekend, and it's a Big Deal for those of us who have been waiting fourteen years to learn what happened to the film's wonderful characters. If you haven't seen the first one (or haven't in a while), here's a brief recap: The first movie centered around Harper Stewart (Taye Diggs), a writer who decides to "fictionalize" his friends' secrets in a new book, stupidly imagining that they wouldn't figure it out. The book details an affair Harper had with his best friend Lance's (Morris Chestnut) now-fiancée, Mia (Monica Calhoun), who was frustrated because Lance was cheating on her. Lance assumed she didn't know about his infidelity and she got her (secret!) revenge by messing with Harper. Now with their wedding approaching and Harper chosen as best man, we all know what happens: His book...

Much like the shopping malls and department stores, Hollywood often jumps the gun on trotting out their winter holiday products. We’ve not cooked the Thanksgiving turkey (or fully digested Free Birds), but the first Christmas flick arrives at the multiplexes this weekend. So will it be a perennial classic like A Christmas Story or White Christmas or a lump of coal like Christmas With The Kranks? Well, it does have something in common with one of the newer classics, National Lampoon’S Christmas Vacation. It’s a sequel (well Nlcv was the third visit with the Grisswalds) too. In 1999 a group of old friends got together for a big wedding in the appropriately titled The Best Man. And now they re-unite, not for another stroll down the aisle, but to exchange gifts (and secrets) in The Best Man Holiday. So, who’s been naughty and who’s been nice?...

I walked into The Best Man Holiday blind. Fourteen years ago writer/director Malcolm D. Lee made his writing and directorial debut with a movie called The Best Man. To this day I've never seen it and while the opening credits for its unexpected sequel begin to play, suddenly I'm thrust into an unfamiliar world where it clearly would have been beneficial to be ahead of the game. Who are these peoplec Who had sex with whomc Who was best manc Who is the stripperc Are they still friendsc Fortunately, I now have the answers and can either introduce you or jog your faded memory. First there's Taye Diggs as Harper, a successful author currently suffering from writer's block. He's married to Robyn (Sanaa Lathan) who's nine months pregnant. Then there's Lance (Morris Chestnut), a professional football player, whom I learned got married in the first film to Mia (Monica Calhoun...

This week's big new release is The Best Man Holiday, a sequel to the 1999 movie The Best Man. That's 14 years that it took for us to get a follow-up to the hit ensemble comedy-drama, which stars Taye Diggs, Monica Calhoun, Terrence Howard, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut and more. And the buzz so far indicates that it was worth the wait, with reviews for the sequel near the level of the original. Very few other long-awaited sequels have had such luck. They have their defenders, but titles that come to mind include Tron: Legacy, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, Men in Black III and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. We can also include prequels -- particularly Star Wars: Episode 1 -- The Phantom Menace and The Thing -- in the...
