The latest cult classic to get a 4K re-release is Gregg Araki’s 1997 Gen X trip “Nowhere,” courtesy of Strand Releasing. An apocalyptic dive into a world of teens more hedonistic and revelry-making than the scary wake-up call of Araki’s “The Doom Generation” two years prior, the perverse L.A.-set “Nowhere” has a killer soundtrack including Radiohead, Slowdive, Hole, Sonic Youth, Massive Attack, Portishead, Nine Inch Nails, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and much more to add to the teenage moodiness. Strand is currently touring the restored (and uncut) film nationwide starting Friday, October 6, and IndieWire shares the exclusive new trailer below.
The cast is led by James Duval, Rachel True, Nathan Bexton, Chiara Mastroianni, Debi Mazar, Kathleen Robertson, Christina Applegate, Ryan Phillippe, Heather Graham, and Mena Suvari, with appearances from Denise Richards, Shannen Doherty, Rose McGowan, and John Ritter. Sctv alum Dave Thomas has teamed with actor and son Harrison Thomas to develop the dark comedy The Orange for the CBC and BBC Studios.
The father-son sitcom, produced by Canada’s Project 10 Productions, follows a family that witnesses a gangland bombing and is placed by The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in a witness protection program in Rye, England. Only when they reach their new U.K. home does the family realize the Mounties have been dumping all their witnesses and informants in Rye, including Canada’s most hardened criminals who are now their next-door neighbors.
Canadian comic and actor Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis played Sctv‘s and Saturday Night Live’s beer-loving McKenzie brothers during the 1980s. Their act, which was launched to mock government mandated Canadian TV content rules, was spun off into the 1983 cult comedy Strange Brew, and that year also made the late-night transition stateside to SNL.

It may feel like throuples are a distinctly modern romantic arrangement – but this couldn’t be further from the case.
In fact, consensual non-monogamy, such as a ménage à trois, goes back centuries. It can even be found in the bible.
Recently, David Haye has been the subject of speculation surrounding his private life, with fans claiming that the ex-boxer is in a three-way relationship with model Sian Osborne and The Saturdays singer Una Healy.
On Valentine’s Day, Haye appeared to confirm the rumours, with Healy also sharing a coy message on Instagram alluding to the relationship.
When it comes to depictions of polyamorous relationships in film and TV, good examples have traditionally been few and far between.
But that’s not to say there haven’t been any – from pre-code classics to modern indie dramas, there are plenty of films and TV series which place the spotlight on...

“Swimming with Sharks” has waded into dangerously realistic waters while showcasing the abuse at the heart of Hollywood, but showrunner Kathleen Robertson wants to clarify that the Roku Channel series is anything but a woman-versus-woman cautionary tale.
The psychological thriller, now streaming, stars Kiernan Shipka as a Los Angeles newcomer who becomes the assistant to an ambitious studio executive played by Diane Kruger. Inspired by the 1994 film of the same name, “Swimming with Sharks” gender-swapped its two lead characters for a female-driven story.
“My feeling was if I could use this world as a jumping-off point, but have it be told through the eyes of two very complex women, there would be something there,” writer-producer Robertson told Black Book Magazine. “I’ve been a working actor since the age of 10 so this industry is very much a part of my identity. I grew up on sets. I have my 10,000 hours,...

Ask anyone in Hollywood if they have any horror stories and they're bound to pull up at least one. Swimming With Sharks' showrunner Kathleen Robertson even admitted that the Roku Original series—following a studio intern who gets way too caught up in the dog-eat-dog world of entertainment—takes inspiration from some of the most infamous tales to come out of the TV and movie industries. But as Diane Kruger explained in an interview E! News, "this is the worst-case scenario." As in Fountain Pictures intern Lou Simms (played by Kiernan Shipka) isn't just reading scripts and fetching lunch but also engaging in some light sexual coercion. But Kiernan and...

“Swimming with Sharks” has the makings of a breakout streaming series. There’s identifiable young stars in Kiernan Shipka and Finn Jones, and a strong performance from Diane Kruger. Then there is Donald Sutherland in what might be his most repulsive villain role yet: a Hollywood patriarch who delivers from his literal deathbed some of the show’s most jaw-dropping moments of sexual exploitation (and there are a lot).
Delivering the pulpy indulgence of “You,” the palace intrigue of “House of Cards,” and a dick-pics-per-episode ratio bested only by “Minx,” it would be right at home on many streamers. But — surprise! — when the show’s eight-episode first season drops Friday, it will be available exclusively on the Roku Channel, for free, to the 60 million people who use the company’s boxes, sticks, and smart TVs in any given month.

Enshrined in Hollywood mythology are stories of tyrannical bosses and the assistants who must endure their wrath for an eventual shot at climbing the ladder. One of the more notorious exemplifiers is producer Scott Rudin, whose verbally and physically abusive behavior was the subject of a recent exposé.
Years before those allegations went into print, they found their way onto the big screen. The 1994 drama “Swimming with Sharks” starred Kevin Spacey as a draconian studio executive and Frank Whaley as the assistant he pushes too far, spurring him to seek revenge.
Nearly three decades later, “Swimming with Sharks” is making its way back onto the screen, this time as a Roku Original series starring Diane Kruger and Kiernan Shipka. But aside from the title, setting and power dynamic between its two leads, the six-episode show – which premiered at last month’s SXSW Festival – has little in common with its source material.

There’s never a great time to learn that the corporate entity producing your TV show is calling it quits. For the folks behind Quibi’s Swimming with Sharks, however, the timing of the streamer’s demise was particularly less than ideal.
“We actually learned about the platform officially ending on like the third-to-last day (of shooting),” Sharks showrunner Kathleen Robertson tells Den of Geek. “I found out while at the monitor watching (the performers) act. I literally got an alert and it was from Deadline saying like ‘Quibi is no longer.’”
Quibi, the now-legendary icon of streaming era hubris, launched on April 6, 2020 with the working theory that audiences preferred their content in “quick bites” (hence: “quibi”). After audiences resoundingly responded with a firm “no thanks”, Quibi closed its doors on Dec. 1, 2020, leaving dozens of original TV series and movies without a home. Kathleen Robertson is an actress who has moved into writing with projects like the upcoming "Little Bee," starring Julia Roberts. Her latest piece is the upcoming series "Swimming with Sharks," loosely based on the 1994 TriMark Pictures film starring Frank Whaley and Kevin Spacey. The series, which will premiere in its entirety for free on The Roku Channel later this month, tells the story of Lou Simms (Kiernan Shipka), a young intern freshly arrived in Hollywood who is obsessed with studio CEO Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger). With the majority of prestige television being released on streaming services and cable networks with no content restrictions, nudity from famous actors and actresses has become commonplace. To many, it is no longer shocking to see their favorite stars strip down on screen. But that doesn’t mean it can’t be daunting for the performers themselves.
Diane Kruger, who stars in the new television remake of “Swimming with Sharks” on the Roku Channel, recently opened up about her experience filming nude scenes on the show. In an interview with Insider, Kruger said she was extremely hesitant about doing nudity. As an actress, her approach is generally to avoid nude scenes unless there is a specific artistic justification.
“The motivation behind sex scenes has to be a good one. I don’t agree with just getting naked on screen or doing stuff like that,” Kruger said. “So I was pretty...

Backstabbing. Ruthless. Two-faced. Revenge.
Those words appear in a towering font on the poster for the 1994 film “Swimming With Sharks,” behind an image of (now disgraced) actor Kevin Spacey screaming directly into the face of his co-star, Frank Whaley. The film gave audiences an unflinching look at Hollywood’s workplace culture — as it was then, before current efforts to eradicate toxic and inexcusable behavior.
Verbal and physical abuse, staplers and phones hurled at employees, 20-hour workdays, sexual harassment and rampant degradation all play out in the film, which was reportedly based on writer-director George Huang’s experiences under producers Joel Silver and Scott Rudin. “Swimming With Sharks” has become a touchstone for industry survivors, and Roku will unveil a TV series adaptation of the film on April 15.
In the nearly two decades since it was released, a subgenre has sprung up surrounding these backlot stories, especially in the post-#MeToo era.

“Power is a dangerous, delicate creature,” Kiernan Shipka’s character tells us in voice-over as she zips up her dress. “Intoxicating. And fickle.” These are the sort of truisms that “Swimming With Sharks,” a new Roku Channel original series, doles out with a heavy hand — ponderous enough to obscure that there’s little new on offer here.
The show, an update of the 1994 drama about a tyrannical studio executive and his ambitious assistant created by Kathleen Robertson, doesn’t have much interesting to say about, say, the dynamic between higher-ups and underlings in Hollywood, its putative topic; its gender-flipping its two leads (the exec is now played by Diane Kruger) seems to have been done solely to generate a sense of scandal in the sexual tension between the two. That gets at just how un-2022 this series feels: It gawks at women in power who are drawn to one another...

In 2021, The Roku Channel surprised the world by acquiring the rights to Quibi’s (Rip) catalog of original programming. Freed from the constraints of a ten-minute runtime, this collection of oddball shows will soon be unleashed on streaming devices around the country. And if the first two episodes of Kathleen Robertson’s “Swimming With Sharks” are any indication, some of these stories deserve to outlast the gimmicky technology that spawned them.

Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger‘s upcoming drama — first announced for Quibi, then acquired by Roku — is almost here. Swimming with Sharks is set to debut in April, Roku, Inc. and Lionsgate have announced. The new series offers a look at the dark side of the Hollywood studio system, and follows a Hollywood assistant (Shipka’s Lou Simms) who turns the tables on an abusive boss (Kruger’s Joyce Holt). Check out the full first-look photos and trailer, below. Courtesy of Roku “Historically, Hollywood has always represented reinvention, rebirth. Starting over. There has never been a better time to embrace that,” showrunner, creator and writer Kathleen Robertson said in a statement. “My goal was to subvert this story and come at if from a place of both wonder and corruption, through the eyes of two complex female perspectives. Oh, what hatred of a toxic boss can drive you to do.
Kiernan Shipka stars as bright-eyed intern Lou Simms, who starts her apprenticeship at Hollywood production studio Fountain Pictures to learn from the best of the best, CEO Joyce Holt (Diane Kruger), in “Swimming with Sharks.” Yet Lou’s dreams of stardom seem to come with a darker edge as her complex plot against Joyce unravels. It was no accident that Lou was selected to join Fountain Pictures, and she’s going to do more than just get her feet wet in the secrets of the studio.
Part “The Assistant,” part “All About Eve,” the Roku Channel original warns that “proximity to greatness is intoxicating”…and deadly.
“Swimming with Sharks” debuted its trailer during Roku’s first-ever SXSW event. The series is set to premiere on April 15, with all six 30-minute episodes streaming for free on The Roku Channel.

“You have no brain. No judgement calls are necessary. What you think means nothing. What you feel means nothing. You are here for me. You are here to protect my interests and to serve my needs.”
That’s the iconic line spewed by a toxic movie producer to his rattled assistant in “Swimming With Sharks,” the 1994 George Huang film. Within the industry, the movie has been referenced as hyperrealistic and the subject of many inside jokes. Today, however, Variety can exclusively reveal the first trailer for a full-stop reboot of the property from creator Kathleen Robertson.

Gritty, psychological scripted drama “Swimming With Sharks,” starring Kiernan Shipka and Diane Kruger, will debut on The Roku Channel this April. The leads were previously announced back in February 2020, when the series was previously under Quibi. Donald Sutherland, Ross Butler, Thomas Dekker, Finn Jones, Erica Alexander and Gerardo Celasco also star alongside Shipka and Kruger.
“Swimming With Sharks” will feature six half-hour episodes. Kruger (“In the Fade”) will play Joyce Holt, studio head of Fountain Pictures, while Shipka will play Joyce’s intern, Lou Simms, who develops an extreme obsession with her boss. Roku will release Quibi’s reboot series of Swimming With Sharks, starring Diane Kruger and Kiernan Shipka, this spring.
The Lionsgate-produced series is written and produced by Kathleen Robertson, and directed by Tucker Gates, with Chris Cowles and Liz Destro also executive producing.
Set to make its Roku debut in April, Swimming With Sharks follows Lou Simms (Shipka), an intern at Fountain Pictures. She seems like a naïve Hollywood newcomer, awestruck by the studios’ notorious CEO, Joyce Holt (Kruger). In truth, Lou has done extensive research on Joyce and landing this internship was no happy accident. As Lou’s obsession grows, she will do anything to get close to her idol.
Swimming With Sharks touts six 30-minute episodes and also features Donald Sutherland, Thomas Dekker, Finn Jones, Erica Alexander, Ross Butler and Gerardo Celasco. Stephen Israel, Jay Cohen and Dana Brunetti also serve as executive producers.

Whether viewers of The Expanse season 6 enjoy Marco Inaros as a villain or not, one thing’s for sure: everyone’s rooting for his downfall. The ironic thing is he could almost defeat himself through sheer pigheadedness if not for the fearless advice of a rising star in the Free Navy, a character by the name of Rosenfeld Guoliang, played by Kathleen Robertson. We asked creators Ty Franck and Daniel Abraham as well as showrunner Naren Shankar about the new dynamic Rosenfeld creates in the show.
Although Rosenfeld is a male character in the James S. A. With The Expanse season 6 being the series’ final run, there isn’t much time to resolve the solar system’s woes, but the journey to whatever resolution the show gives us will be about what the characters everyone loves do with their remaining time on screen. ABC is making some decisions about its remaining pilots, and it's bad news for three promising ideas.
Kevin Costner-executive produced National Parks Investigation, Triage, and Dark Horse are no longer moving ahead at the network.
The good news is that National Parks Investigation and Dark Horse are both being shopped to other outlets, but the jury is out on whether Triage will be shopped.

The cast included Billy Cambell, Angel Parker, Gerardo Celasco, Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut, Blu Hunt, Tiffany Dupont, and Guillermo Diaz.

It’s been a busy day at ABC.
The network has handed series pickups to pilots The Wonder Years, Queens, Maggie and Abbott Elementary and passed on pilots including Sam Esmail’s Acts of Crime and comedies Black Don’t Crack and Bucktown.
But there are five pilots that are still in consideration for the 2021-22 broadcast season, including Kevin Costner’s National Parks Investigation, that will be considered for midseason.
These also include Dark Horse, Epic, Promised Land and Triage.
Dark Hose, Epic and Promised Land have yet to be filmed and will be considered after the upfronts, while the off-cycle Triage pilot was produced and went through a rollercoaster ride of a poorly received first cut, highly testing second cut and so-so screening response. National Parks Investigation was considered a wildcard for fall consideration but a final, broadcast-length cut of the pilot, was not delivered in time.

Is this a thrilling, Chinatown-like Hollywood mystery, or a semi-docu about the making of the first TV Superman show? Or is it going to shed light on the mysterious death of actor George Reeves, the childhood hero we couldn’t believe had died by his own hand? Allen Coulter’s well-crafted show has a lot to say and says it well with an excellent cast… yet it needed something it doesn’t deliver. If you don’t require your movieland mysteries tied up in a neat bow, this could fit the bill.
