TV writers/producers Tanya Saracho (Vida), Mike Royce (One Day at a Time), and Liz Hsiao Lan Alper (Day of the Dead), along with the Writers Guild Foundation, have announced graduates of the inaugural class of the Writers’ Access Support Staff Training Program.
Launched in March by Saracho, Royce and Alper in partnership with Wgf, the program’s mission is to provide writers who are Bipoc, LGBTQ+, writers with disabilities, and writers over the age of 50, with tools and education to become a writers’ assistant and script coordinator, ultimately resulting in meaningful employment opportunities.
Forty-eight participants were chosen out of over 2,200 applications which were reviewed by a committee of TV writers and showrunners, many of whom previously worked in support staff roles. The 48 participants are being split into two eight-week virtual sessions.

Peacock has axed the “Punky Brewster” revival after one season.
The series, which saw Soleil Moon Frye reprise her role from the 1980s NBC sitcom of the same name, debuted with its 10-episode first season back in February. The show picked up with Frye’s character Punky as a single mother of three trying to get her life back on track after separating from her husband and taking in a foster child.
In addition to Frye, the “Punky” revival also brought back Cherie Johnson from the original series, adding franchise newcomers Freddie Prinze Jr., Quinn Copeland (Izzy), Noah Cottrell (Diego), Oliver De Los Santos (Daniel) and Lauren Lindsey Donzis (Hannah).
The show becomes the second Peacock series to face cancellation following the streamer’s “Brave New World” adaptation.

The show that taught 1980s kids not to hide in an abandoned old refrigerator — or, at the very least, learn CPR in case one of your friends does sneak into one of those scary old latch iceboxes — will not continue with its revival. The updated “Punky Brewster,” which Peacock brought back as part of the streamer’s first-year lineup, will not be renewed for more episodes.
Peacock debuted all 10 episodes of the new “Punky Brewster,” featuring original star Soleil Moon Frye (who also served as an executive producer), on Feb. 25. The show reunited Frye as Punky with her old friend Cherie (Cherie Johnson), and updated her story to focus on Punky raising her three kids after separating from her husband (Freddie Prinze Jr.). A photographer like her foster dad Henry in the original series, Punky brings a foster child, Izzy (Quinn Copeland), into her home.

Peacock has opted not to renew Punky Brewster for a second season. The followup to the 1984 sitcom was headlined by the original series’ star Soleil Moon Frye reprising her role as the titular character who became a pop culture staple of the 1980s.
Punky Brewster, which premiered in February, was among the first original series on NBCU’s streamer Peacock alongside fellow NBC sitcom revival Saved By the Bell and two other comedy series, Rutherfold Falls and Girls5Eva, all of which have been renewed for a second season.
“Punky Brewster was a beloved series that tackled meaningful storylines with so much heart,” said Lisa Katz, President, Scripted, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “It was a bright light for so many viewers and we are forever grateful to Universal Studio Group, the producers, the cast and crew and especially to Soleil Moon Frye for reigniting the Punky Power within everyone.”

You can take Soleil Moon Frye out of Punky Brewster, but you can’t take Punky out of Frye, as actress said she and her character are nearly one in the same.
During Peacock’s leg of the TCA Winter Tour on Wednesday, Frye joined fellow cast members Quinn Copeland, Cherie Johnson, Laurien Lindsey Donzis and Freddie Prinze Jr. and executive producers Jim and Steve Armogida to tease the upcoming Peacock revival.
“Punky is such a part of me. I don’t know where she ends and I begin because we are so much the same,” Frye said during the panel.
The reboot sees Frye reprise her childhood role as the grown-up Punky Brewster, a single-mother of three trying to keep her life on track when she meets Izzy (Copeland), a young girl in the foster system who reminds Punk a lot of her younger self. The “continuation,” as Frye dubbed the series,...

In the mid to late-1980s, the titular character on “Punky Brewster” (played by Soleil Moon Frye) was a free-spirited, elementary school student coming of age while being raised by a foster father Henry, played by George Gaynes. Now, almost four decades later, Punky is a newly single mom experiencing a second coming-of-age when she bonds with young, free-spirited foster girl Izzy, played by Quinn Copeland, in Peacock’s continuation series of the same name.
“Really through Izzy’s character Punky finds so much of her Punky power again,” Frye, who also serves as executive producer on the new show tells Variety. “I feel like so many of us grow up and it’s so easy to forget that inner spark. So, to feel that coming back again and reigniting is such an amazing and incredible feeling for both me and for Punky.”

The kid’s show Crash & Bernstein only just began its first season last fall. The fun series follows the misadventures of Wyatt Bernstein, a young man who is 12 years of age and lives with three sisters. When he wishes for a brother, he gets his wish come true as a “Build-a-Bestie” puppet comes to life. Hijinks most definitely ensue. Does it remind anyone else of Calvin and Hobbs? Disney Xd‘s breakout comedy Crash & Bernstein has been picked up for a second season. Production will resume in Van Nuys, California in July for a fall 2013 premiere. Created by Eric Friedman and executive-produced by Friedman, Mike Larsen, Jim Armogida and Steve Armogida, the multi-camera series stars Cole Jensen, Tim Lagasse, Oana Gregory, Landry Bender and Aaron R. Landon. It follows Wyatt Bernstein (Jensen), a typical boy who lives in a household full of girls and desperately wishes for a brother to do fun guy stuff with. His family takes Wyatt to a Build-a-Bestie for his birthday, which leads to his dream finally coming true — his Bestie creation, Crash (Lagasse), a wildly unpredictable puppet, comes to life. Together, the new “brothers” help each other navigate life’s adventures.
