Ozark star Jason Butler Harner reflected on his experience filming The Big Bend in his new uInterview.
“I love doing ultra-low budget movies,” told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “I come from the theater, so the nature of communication and collaboration can be different on [low-budget movies].”
The Big Bend follows two families, the Prices and the Talbots, who meet in the remote Texas desert. During their visit, the boundaries of marriage, friendship and parenthood are tested in one of the wildest places in America.
Harner honed in on the meaning of the film: “It’s about trying to be present. We do this all the time; we try to figure out how to be present every day as much as possible, especially after someone dies or something, and it’s just hard work.”
“So I think that was probably a little bit of my focus, how to take it in while being distracted so much,...

When Trey Edward Shults was 18 years old, he went to Hawaii for the summer to stay with his aunt Krisha – yes, the same Krisha who starred in his 2016 breakout “Krisha.” His aunt was connected to small filmmaking community on the island and got her nephew jobs working on commercials and other productions.

“I lucked out and got on this Terrence Malick movie,” said Shults when he was guest on IndeWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. The small crew, sans Malick, was shooting footage of a volcano for the documentary “Voyage of Time.”
“It was five guys with an IMAX camera,” said Shults. “I loved movies, but I didn’t know how they were made, really. I didn’t even get what the guy [the film loader] in the changing bag with the film was...

This year, two films by Terrence Malick received a theatrical release. The first was “Knight of Cups,” an experimental drama about a depressed screenwriter (Christian Bale) who embarks on a journey for love and self, and the second was “Voyage of Time,” a documentary film that celebrates the universe. Malick created two versions of the film: a 35-mm feature-length version that premiered at this year’s Venice Film Festival and a condensed version for IMAX theaters. The IMAX version was released in 15 theaters this past October, but now the film is coming back to theaters, only this time it’s in an “Ultra Widescreen” format.

If you had been anticipating Terrence Malick‘s Voyage of Time for many years, the ability to actually see it upon its release this past October has been a bit frustrating. Relegated to very select IMAX theaters — usually the kind one finds at museums and zoos — there’s a good chance it passed by you or never came to your town at all. However, before the year is over, a new version of the documentary will be getting a wider release.
Variety reports that an “Ultra Widescreen” version of the 45-minute film will hit 21 screens across the country starting this Friday, December 9th. Presented in a 3.6:1 aspect ratio, for reference, it will go far beyond the 2.76:1 ratio Quentin Tarantino used for last year’s The Hateful Eight. That’s not the only change as Brad Pitt‘s narration will also be stripped, resulting in a more visual experience.

For more than a decade, Austin-based producers Sarah Green and Nicolas Gonda have helped Terrence Malick to achieve his far-flung filmmaking ambitions. Oscar-nominated “The Tree of Life,” starring Brad Pitt, has come and gone, as well as “Knight of Cups,” starring Christian Bale, and now arrives the 40-years-in-the-making documentary “Voyage of Time,” which actually started shooting in 2003 when renowned nature cinematographer Paul Atkins (who shot second unit on “The Tree of Life”) alerted the filmmakers that volcanoes were erupting in Hawaii.
So, they sent him off to capture some of the most extraordinary shots in the film, as molten lava bursts up under the ocean. One cameraman took the IMAX camera so close to exploding magma that his boots melted.
Backed by an original National Geographic Society grant, IMAX, foreign sales company Wild Bunch and indie distributor Broad Green (which began financing and releasing Malick’s films in 2014) the movie takes two forms.
