Great casting is one of the things best defined by what it is not. There’s an alchemy to the assembling of a cast — particularly a larger ensemble — that can only be achieved with luck and a sharp eye. And while the 2022-2023 TV season saw plenty of larger-than-life performances and jaw-dropping transformations, these four first-year series managed, in wildly different ways, the same balancing act of star turns and sharply delineated supporting roles. Here are four series worthy of Emmy Award consideration for their feats of casting.

Although "Mad Men" was a show that paid a lot of attention to detail, it did mess up on occasion. For instance, the writing on the sign on the Sterling Cooper building in the early seasons is in the Gil Sans font, a font that was not in popular use until the seventies! Boy, I really hope somebody got fired for that blunder. But for the most part, it's a show that successfully immerses its viewers in the crazy world of the sixties, with the clothes, slang, furniture, and the characters' values all consistently era-appropriate.
That pursuit of full immersion extended into the casting of the extras on the show, who also needed to look like believable upper-class people of the time. This created some problems for the casting directors, because it was often hard to find suitable actors in Los Angeles who met showrunner Matthew Weiner's particular standards.

When Matthew Weiner planned his next project, there was never a question in his mind: He wanted to get the gang back together.
After all, the creator of the acclaimed drama “Mad Men” is renowned for his meticulous attention to detail, and indeed that series won multiple trophies for every aspect of its production. So when he conceived of “The Romanoffs,” Amazon’s new anthology series about characters who claim to be descendants of the legendary Russian royal family, the first calls he made were to the skilled artisans who shaped “Mad Men,” from casting and production design to costume and hair and makeup.
“They are the best at what they do,” says Weiner, who wrote and directed every episode. “It’s not just a friendship. It’s a matter of trust, and a matter of respect.”
But this time, instead of painstakingly depicting advertising culture in New York in the 1960s,...

Meet the Romanoffs.
Amazon has released several first look images of the new anthology series from “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner, along with a lineup for each of the eight episodes, each of which features different cast members.
“The Romanoffs” marks the first Amazon series to be rolled out on a weekly basis: The first two episodes, “The Violet Hour” and “The Royal We,” will debut on Friday, October 12, with subsequent episodes following each week.
“The Romanoffs,” which is created, written, directed and executive produced by Weiner, features eight separate stories about people in contemporary times who believe themselves to be descendants of the Russian royal family. The show’s first trailer, which was released earlier this month, features the sprawling cast discussing their connection to the Romanov family. Each story centers around a new cast in a new location, set in seven countries around the globe.

“The Magicians” is never boring, and not just because it plays in the realm of fantasy. In fact, Syfy’s adaptation of the popular Lev Grossman novels never rests on its magical laurels — such as using strange mythical creatures or bizarre spells — as shortcuts to telling an intriguing story.
Instead, it constantly pushes itself to conjure up new ways to present its narrative, and the result is often as bewitching as it is bold. Take for example two episodes from earlier in the season. “Be the Penny” explores what it’s like for characters to mourn the loss of one of their own, but it’s told from the perspective of the deceased. The episode directly after, the poignant “A Life in a Day,” plays with the concept of time as two of the main characters literally spend a lifetime on what seems to be a hopeless task.

For six seasons, Laura Schiff and Carrie Audino have been filling the world of “Mad Men” with slick executives, timeless women, and memorable period characters. They’ve received Emmy nominations for casting all six seasons—winning in 2010 for Season 3—and also earned a 2009 Artios Award from the Casting Society of America. Perhaps the biggest testament to their work is that “Mad Men” is the show every actor wants to be on. “A lot of people want to do it, so it’s not hard to get high-level actors,” Schiff says. “But we don’t really put a ton of famous people on the show because we’re casting a period piece where we want to keep people involved in the story.” Audino points to Julia Ormond, who plays the mother of Don Draper’s current wife, Megan. “Julia was simply perfect for that role,” says Audino. “We would never cast...

For five seasons, casting directors Laura Schiff and Carrie Audino have been finding actors to populate the boardrooms and bedrooms of the 1960s advertising executives on AMC’s “Mad Men.” They have been nominated for Emmy Awards for every season, winning in 2010, and the duo also won an Artios Award in 2009.They recently spoke to Back Stage about working with the show’s creator Matt Weiner, avoiding celebrity stunt casting, and finding the perfect actor to play Don Draper’s new wife. As the most-nominated drama at the Emmys this year (with 17 nominations), Mad Men is sure to send a Sterling Cooper’s worth of reps to the stage at the Nokia Theatre Sunday night. (If we’re lucky, we’ll also catch many glorious cut-aways of Christina Hendricks’s gorgeously sardonic reactions and of John Slattery, high-ball in hand, ogling the cast of Glee.) In fact, Mad Men already has a head start, scoring two Emmys at the Creative Arts Emmys last week: outstanding casting and outstanding hairstyling. Obviously, the crack team that designs, builds, and maintains both Jon Hamm and January Jones’s perfect coiffures deserves an Emmy, if not the Pritzker Prize in architecture. Perhaps more subtly, but no less impeccably, Laura Schiff and Carrie Audino’s perfectly-curated casting cries out for the recognition it’s finally received. It's a good day for funny people, especially if your name is Tina Fey or Seth MacFarlane.
Fey's series, 30 Rock, was handed 22 Emmy nominations this morning, which stands as a record for a comedy series. She and Alec Baldwin were also nominated for acting awards. Plus, for the first time some of the other actors on NBC's laffer were recognized. Jane Krakowski, Jack McBrayer and Tracy Morgan all picked up supporting nominations.
