Thanks to the weather gods for pushing the expected rain back by a day, the 39th Film Independent Spirit Awards returned to Santa Monica this Sunday under hot and somewhat muggy conditions, giving way to a gorgeous sunset which began to touch down just as the ceremony was ending. Which is to say, for the first time in years it was not freezing cold in the press tent (yay!).
As in past years, Official Partner Bulleit Frontier Whiskey was back at the pre-ceremony outdoor reception with multiple stations serving custom cocktails, alongside the official beer of these Spirit Awards, Stella Artois. For guests tackling two or three awards shows within 24 hours this weekend (the SAG Awards and the PGA Awards both fell on the same weekend) and dying for a caffeine boost,...

The rain stayed away from Santa Monica Beach on Sunday (February 25) as Past Lives was named best film and Celine Song best director at the 39th annual Spirit Awards.
While the legacy studio and streamer contenders have dominated much of the big-ticket awards shows this season like Saturday night’s SAG Awards, last weekend’s Baftas, the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, this was a good opportunity for the Oscar-nominated A24 romance and Song to earn gongs for a film which has done well among critics groups since its world premiere at Sundance just over one year ago.

A24’s Past Lives won the top prize for best feature at the 39th annual Film Independent Spirit Awards, with writer-director Celine Song also winning best director for her feature film debut.
American Fiction’s Jeffrey Wright won best lead performance for his role in the Amazon MGM Studios comedy, presented to him by his fellow Oscar nominee Colman Domingo. “It’s funny, you go to these award shows, and you kind of grow tired of them,” laughed Wright. “And then you get one. It changes the vibe a little bit.”
American Fiction writer-director Cord Jefferson also won best screenplay for his directorial debut. “Our film is so independent that one morning I woke up at our hotel to find out that there had been a triple stabbing the night before in the lobby,” said Jefferson. “They were cleaning up the blood. And I would not have it any other way.

It’s Day 7 of the SAG-AFTRA strike and Day 80 of the WGA strike.
With temperatures reaching 90 degrees in Century City on Thursday afternoon, Michael Chiklis, Cobra Kai co-creator Josh Heald, Dylan McDermott, Dermot Mulroney and his sister-in-law Michele Mulroney, VP of WGA West, led the picket lines at Fox Studios.
Chiklis, a SAG-AFTRA member since 1988, told Deadline he’s walking the pickets to “support my brethren in a really righteous fight for fair and equitable wages for what we do.”
The Emmy winner most recognized for his role as Vic Mackey in The Shield is asking for cool heads to reunite at the negotiating table to hammer out a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Additionally, he hopes the strike marks a turning point for the industry to be honest about the struggles it faces.

After SAG-AFTRA leadership announced that the union would be going on strike, picketing began on Friday. In New York City and Los Angeles, actors have joined writers outside the studios, picketing and rallying outside of Netflix, Warner Bros. Discovery, Disney, Amazon, NBCUniversal and others in both cities.
Corporate greed was at the center of messaging on day one of the joint picketing from SAG-AFTRA and the WGA.
When the bus carrying SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher and the rest of the negotiating committee arrived outside of Netflix’s LA offices, they were mobbed by media and fellow protesters as they inched their way down the sidewalk along Sunset Boulevard.
Drescher delivered a passionate speech at the Thursday press conference announcing the strike, and showed up to today’s protests equally ready to fight fire with fire. When asked by Variety Friday about Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments about the strike,...

It was a big win for the underdog on Wednesday as Freevee’s Jury Duty was nominated for four Emmy Awards including Outstanding Comedy Series, Supporting Actor for James Marsden, Writing for Mekki Leeper and Casting for Susie Farris.
Although completely unexpected, the surprise was obviously welcome by executive producer David Bernad, who spoke to Deadline about the momentous occasion.
“I give an incredible amount of credit to the writers, Cody Heller, Andrew Weinberg, Lee Eisenberg, Gene Stupnitsky; Nick Hatton, one of our incredible producers; the cast who were all exceptional obviously James, and everyone else in the cast who really dedicated so much of their life to the show. They all deserve this award,” Bernad, also a producer on HBO’s The White Lotus and NBC’s Superstore, to name a few, told Deadline.

A column chronicling events and conversations on the awards circuit.
So now, as they say, is crunch time as this column leads into the first weekend where 20,000-plus eligible Emmy voters (I am but one of them) have ballots if not in hand then at least on their laptop and can begin voting in the categories they are eligible to judge. All members get to weigh in on the program categories. Others, depending on their branch (I am in the Writers Branch and a former Governor there) also get to vote on their branch selections.
The ballots went live Thursday and of course have all the usual suspects and obvious front-runners to choose from. The sheer number of voters, and the overwhelming amount of content thrown at voters during the very long Emmy season that started six months ago, simply tends to favor the best-known and most-written-about programs. So as...

When Jury Duty executive vp David Bernad approached casting director Susie Farris to find the jurors for his Freevee mockumentary series, he knew exactly how to pitch the project. “He said, ‘It’s what you do best: putting together an ensemble comedy,’ ” recalls Farris of the first phone call with the producer, who added that he wasn’t looking “for names.” But when she asked about the script, the response caught her off guard — there wasn’t one.
That’s because the largely improvised Jury Duty follows an entirely fake civil case in which everyone in the courtroom — the judge, the bailiff, the attorneys, the jurors, the plaintiff and the defendant — are all actors. All but one person, that is: Ronald Gladden, a Los Angeles-based everyman who believed from the beginning of jury selection to the trial’s conclusion that all of it was absolutely real.

Ronald Gladden's Hollywood journey is continuing. The solar contractor-turned-comedy star appears in a new ad with Ryan Reynolds for the actor's mobile brand, Mint Mobile. In the video posted to Reynolds's Instagram, the pair even hug.
"It's hard to believe in a time of crazy inflation Mint is still just $15 a month," Reynolds begins the ad. "Can you believe that, Ronald?"
Gladden walks into frame; his lower-third reads, "Ronald Gladden, All-Around Good Guy." "No, this doesn't seem real," Gladden says.
"Well it is," Reynolds counters. "Premium wireless, $15 a month. What's your problem?"
"Are there hidden cameras?" Gladden asks. Reynolds points him to the "massive" camera in front of them. "I have some major trust issues," Gladden admits. "I've been through some sh*t, man." Reynolds gives him a hug and tells him, "I've got you. You can trust me.

Jury Duty has become a big hit for Amazon Freevee. The executive producers of the series, David Bernad and Todd Schulman, think the concept behind the series is ‘infinitely repeatable.’ So there is a good chance the series may be renewed for a second season.
Season one of the docu-comedy stars James Marsden, Alan Barinholtz, Susan Berger, Cassandra Blair, David Brown, Kirk Fox, Ross Kimball, Pramode Kumar, Trisha Lafache, Mekki Leeper, Brandon Loeser, Edy Modica, Rashida “Sheedz” Olayiwola, Kerry O’Neill, Whitney Rice, Maria Russell, Ishmel Sahid, Ben Seaward, Ron Song, and Evan Williams. The season follows a jury trial where everyone is an actor except for one jury member, a solar contractor from California named Ronald Gladden, who believes he's taking part in an actual trial.

Casting director Susie Farris got the unique opportunity to participate in the meticulous process of jury selection, choosing all but one of 12 jurors — but it was for an entirely made-up court case.
Even with over two decades of casting experience and credits in “Elf,” “Wet Hot American Summer,” “Speechless” and “Mr. Robot,” she had never been met with a task quite like casting Amazon Freevee’s viral series “Jury Duty,” a hidden-camera, “Truman Show”-esque comedy.
In the weeks after its release, “Jury Duty” has been applauded for its outstanding cast of actors, improv comedians and one Ronald Gladden, the lone, non-actor who believed the entire, absurd court case was real.
Farris spoke with Variety to share her process behind selecting television’s favorite petit jury.
Most casting directors don’t work with improv actors, so what was it like for you? Had you ever done anything like this before?...

If you haven’t discovered the eight-part genre-bending comedy “Jury Duty” that started streaming April 7 on Amazon’s free streaming service Freevee, it’s time that you did. It’s been described as the world’s first feelgood prank show, and it’s all of that and more. Here the elevator pitch: “The Office” meets “The Truman Show.” Here’s the premise: A guy answers a Craigslist add looking for someone to participate in a filmed documentary about serving on a jury. What they don’t mention is that they would essentially be unwittingly performing in a sitcom that the person didn’t know was a sitcom and that everyone surrounding them – and we do mean everyone – was an actor.
That unsuspecting dupe happens to be a good-natured, game-for-anything young man named Ronald Gladden, and through the eight episodes of “Jury Duty” we follows his selection onto the purported jury...

"Jury Duty" fans instantly fell for Ronald Gladden and his sweet friendship with James Marsden during the series, but there's another "Jury Duty" star who has a major Hollywood connection: Alan Barinholtz. Alan stars as the judge in the series, doling out judgements in the room (and also praising Gladden so generously in the show's season finale). In the last episode, Alan is seen wearing a "Late Night With Seth Meyers" hat, which gives a clue to his famous family: Alan is the father of comedians Ike and Jon Barinholtz. Ike is best known for his work on shows like "The Mindy Project" and in movies like "Sisters" and "Neighbors," while Jon has appeared on "Superstore" and "American Auto."

The reality comedy series “Jury Duty” is an elaborate prank on one normal man, and you’ll want to be in on the joke.
On Tuesday, Amazon released a trailer for the series, which is coming to the free ad-supported service Freevee on April 7. It’s a “docu-comedy” following Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego who thinks he’s taking part in a documentary about an American jury trial, from juror selection through verdict. In reality, it’s all fake, every other participant is an actor, and everything that happens is carefully scripted to make him feel like he’s taking crazy pills.
“Jury Duty” was created by “The Office” veterans Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Who Is America?” producer Todd Schulman is an EP. Cody Heller (“Dummy”) is the showrunner, and Jake Szymanski (“The Package”) is the director.

The creative minds behind The Office set their new docu-style comedy in the courtroom. Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty, which just released a trailer, focuses on 12 jurors…but only one doesn’t realize he’s not sitting on a real jury.
“Jury Duty originated with a question: Was it possible to make a sitcom like The Office about a trial, populate it with brilliant comedic performers, and put a real person at the center of the show who doesn’t realize he’s surrounded by actors?” said executive producer Todd Schulman (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm). “We honestly had no idea, but when we pitched it to Freevee we pretended like it was a sure thing. Thank God we pulled it off.”

“Jury Duty,” the upcoming docu-style comedy series starring James Marsden as himself, explores truths stranger than fiction when one unsuspecting juror is put in a courtroom of actors for a fake case and a faker documentary.
Marsden leads the “Truman Show”-style misadventure, playing a version of himself who tries – and fails – to get out of his civic duty when the judge fails to recognize him as a public figure. In the first trailer for the Amazon Freevee series, which dropped Tuesday, other characters are seen pushing the envelope of what’s acceptable behavior in the literal court of law – while real-life juror Ronald Gladden goes about his duty being none the wiser that everything is staged.
Coming from the producers of “The Office,” “The White Lotus” and “Bad Trip,” “Jury Duty” is just the latest comedy series to blend genres of reality and scripted, following in the steps of Sacha Baron Cohen,...
