Film and TV studio Fifth Season has secured international distribution rights to “Monsieur Spade,” the crime drama series starring and executive produced by Clive Owen.
Fifth Season will represent the title at the upcoming Berlin European Film Market.
The six-episode series is based on Dashiell Hammett’s hard-boiled private detective Sam Spade, the protagonist of 1930 novel “The Maltese Falcon,” adapted several times for the screen, most notably in 1941 by John Huston with Humphrey Bogart as the sleuth.
In the series, the year is 1963, and legendary detective Spade (Owen) is enjoying retirement in the South of France. Spade’s life in Bozouls is peaceful and quiet, but the rumoured return of his old adversary will change everything. Six beloved nuns have been brutally murdered, and as the town grieves, secrets emerge and new leads are established. Spade learns the murders are connected to a mysterious child, who is believed to possess great powers.

All works of IP exploitation are, on some level, legitimized fanfiction. Once divorced from the original author, the line that separates a franchise’s sequel, prequel or reboot from the average post on Wattpad is a great deal of money and the blessing of an estate and/or corporation. But even with this baseline, the AMC limited series “Monsieur Spade” is an especially unabashed act of wish fulfillment through and for a beloved protagonist. The namesake of “Monsieur Spade” is none other than Sam Spade (Clive Owen), the private investigator who headlined the Dashiell Hammett novel turned John Huston film noir “The Maltese Falcon,” plus a handful of Hammett short stories published in the 1930s. For their spin on Spade, series creators Tom Fontana (“Oz”) and Scott Frank (“The Queen’s Gambit”) send the sleuth to the south of France, where he spends a few weeks of his not-so-peaceful retirement looking...

The James Bond-esque opening sequence of Monsieur Spade sees a glimmering 1950s whip winding down a spectacular country road in the south of France. Inside the car is Sam Spade (Clive Owen) and a doe-eyed young girl, Teresa (Ella Feraud), whom the legendary detective, first introduced in Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, is trying to reunite with her father. When plans go awry and the pair end up stranded, they’re rescued by a glamorous French woman named Gabrielle (Chiara Mastroianni). She, we learn, will become Spade’s wife.
Flash forward eight years and Spade is a broken-hearted widower overseeing Gabrielle’s estate near the town of Bozouls, and he’s placed the teenaged Teresa (now played by Cara Bossom) in a local convent. But what led Spade to a remote town in France with the young girl in the first place? And what occurred in the subsequent eight...

Even before he started kicking the ball downfield as Jamie Tartt in the Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso," Phil Dunster was kicking around the film and television industry as a working actor. Dunster is one of those faces that you might have already seen in a minor role somewhere and forgotten before he gained more visibility in "Ted Lasso." Who remembers his 2017 appearance, for instance, in Kenneth Branagh's star-studded film adaptation of "Murder on the Orient Express," where he played the father of a girl named Daisy?
With "Ted Lasso" now midway through its third season on Apple TV+, and Nicolas Cage currently chewing scenery and veins in theaters in Universal's wacko Dracula movie "Renfield," the unlikely Venn diagram of vampire movie fans, Phil Dunster stans, and supporters of the fictional soccer football team AFC Richmond has perhaps never had more overlap. HBO has released a new trailer for the second season of its original series, "Avenue 5." The show was created by two-time Emmy Award-winner Armando Iannucci and stars Hugh Laurie ("House") and Josh Gad ("Beauty and the Beast"). If you haven't watched it yet, it's the story set about 40 years in the future aboard an interstellar spaceship. It's owned by clueless billionaire Herman Judd (Gad in a ponytail and some pretty wild outfits), who hired mainly attractive actors and models for his crew, so everyone would look good on the bridge and please the passengers. The ship itself is actually run by a second crew who weren't deemed pretty enough to be seen.
The titular space cruiser, Avenue 5, was supposed to be out on an eight-week cruise, but the death of an engineer and the temporary loss of artificial gravity changed their course. Instead of eight weeks, the ship would...

One of the many releases just out now from Scream Factory is the 2018 film Elizabeth Harvest, from Sebastian Gutierrez. It stars Abbey Lee (The Neon Demon), Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones), and Carla Gugino (Gerald's Game). The key cast is joined by Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game) and Dylan Baker (Happiness). Karen Gillan looked homeward for her debut as a writer-director, and what she saw disturbed her: “The Party’s Just Beginning” examines the alarmingly high suicide rate, especially among men, in the Scottish Highlands town where she grew up.
“I was like wow, this is such a strange contradiction. Because it’s such a beautiful, picturesque place to grow up, yet we have this dark statistic looming over us, and I wanted to know why,” Gillan said on the “Shoot This Now” podcast.
Gillan plays Liusaidh (pronounced Lucy), a young woman coping with the suicide of her best friend (Matthew Beard). Liusaidh’s fatalistic mourning includes booze, takeout food and sex with strangers, until she crosses paths with a mysterious out-of-towner played by Lee Pace.
Gillan and Pace met on the set of the first “Guardians,” in which he played Ronan the Accuser.

Karen Gillan Directed and Starred in a Film Called The Party's Just Beginning and Here's The Trailer
Karen Gillan is best know for her roles in Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Who, and Jungle Book, but the actress has also just directed her first movie! It’s called The Party’s Just Beginning and the trailer for the movie has been released.
The movie is described as a “surreal coming of age story told from the perspective of a young Scottish woman (Karen Gillan) trying to cope with the suicide of her best friend and struggling to confront what's truly haunting her.” As a coping mechanism to deal with her life issues, she resorts to having sex and drinking alcohol.
I’ve been a fan of Gillan since her days on Doctor Who and it’s been great to see her film career thrive. Now, she’s getting behind the camera to tell stories and it will be interesting to see where this directing career path leads her.

"I can offer you, like, more magic than any mushroom ever picked." The Orchard has unveiled an official trailer for an indie drama titled The Party's Just Beginning, the feature directorial debut of Scottish actor-filmmaker Karen Gillan, who wrote the screenplay as well. This first premiered at the Glasgow and Tribeca Film Festivals earlier this year, and will be available to watch this fall. The Party's Just Beginning also stars Gillan as a woman named Liusaidh, who's struggling to deal with stress and all the feelings after her friend takes his own life. It's a powerful, darkly comedic film about loss, grief, and survivor's guilt. The cast includes Lee Pace, Matthew Beard, Paul Higgins, Rachel Jackson, Siobhan Redmond, Jamie Quinn, and Lesley Harcourt. This seems a bit wild & crazy but actually looks like an impressive debut. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Karen Gillan's The Party's Just Beginning, from...

[This story contains minor spoilers for Elizabeth Harvest]
Elizabeth Harvest isn't quite a horror film, though that would have made it easier for writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez to get it made.
Gutierrez notes it was "extremely difficult to find financing" for the project, which stars model-turned-actress Abby Lee as Elizabeth Harvest, the young bride to the much older scientist Henry (Ciaran Hinds). The film also features Gutierrez's longtime partner Carla Gugino and Matthew Beard as servants in Henry's manor, where Elizabeth is told nothing is off limits, except for one room she must never enter.
