Exclusive: With the Writers Guilds strike now in its second day, negotiations for a new Directors Guild contract are now just one week away. And like the WGA, streaming residuals are on the DGA’s bargaining agenda when its contract talks start May 10.
And while the DGA has struck only once in its history – for three-plus hours back in 1987 – a directors strike cannot be ruled out this time. The DGA’s current film and TV contract expires June 30.
“Residuals are one of the most important benefits of being a DGA member,” the DGA said in a recent message to its members. “Residuals tie you to the economic success of your work, they provide a safety net between jobs, and they are a major funding source for our Pension Plan. For over 60 years, residuals have helped provide a secure future for our members.”

The second season finale of ‘American Horror Stories’ gets pulled away by the tide and struggles to find its way back to a compelling conclusion.
“She needs to find her life again and get back to normal. We all do.”
There are some exceptional horror films that find fear within the unknown depths of the sea, whether it’s overt monster movies like Deep Rising, Underwater, or “The Raft” segment from Creepshow 2, or terrifying tales that are adjacent to the water like The Shallows. American Horror Story has more or less left underwater tales of woe alone even though a story that’s centered on the Loch Ness Monster or other aquatic Cryptids seems completely in line with the series’ agenda. “Lake,” the season finale of American Horror Stories’ second season, avoids a modern monster myth in favor of a somber meditation on grief and guilt. SeriesFest is expanding its commitment to female-forward initiatives, renewing its partnership with Shondaland, introducing an Executive Elevation Mentorship Program and presenting a live-streamed roundtable discussion about the current state of parity in the industry, Variety has learned exclusively.
Additionally, Christina Yr Jun has won the Women Writing Competition, which comes from SeriesFest in partnership with Big Swing Productions.
“We’re excited to broaden our initiatives and provide real opportunities for minorities who are still very much underrepresented in the television landscape,” said SeriesFest founders Randi Kleiner and Kaily Smith Westbrook in a joint statement. “While statistics are showing an improvement, there’s still a long way to go. As two women who have experienced challenges first-hand, we will continue to put this conversation front and center to raise awareness, and most importantly, opportunities. We’re grateful to have such inspirational industry leaders participate in our mission.”
