Robert Benton and Paul Newman’s show-biz detective tale is one of the best-looking thrillers of 1998. With its star lineup of Susan Sarandon, Gene Hackman, Reese Witherspoon, Stockard Channing and James Garner, its the equivalent of a dog-eared comfy mystery paperback. The classic themes and stylistics are here, but in a new Hollywood where movie stars can get away with murder, and nobody seems to care. Everyone is excellent and the show quite enjoyable, even if it seems we’ve seen a lot of it before. A solid academic extra is the audio commentary by Alain Silver and James Ursini.

With the fifth season of “The Crown” still in production, the prospect of Netflix winning a second consecutive Best Drama Series Emmy this year hinges on other serious shows in its library, such as the recently concluded “Ozark.” Given the crime thriller’s status as the streamer’s ninth most-watched English language series ever, the team behind it are looking to score a farewell haul that reflects its popularity. Recently, actor/director/executive producer Jason Bateman, executive producer/writer Chris Mundy, actress Julia Garner, production designer David Bomba, music supervisor Gabe Hilfer, cinematographer Shawn Kim and editor Cindy Mollo sat down with 2022 Emmys FYC panel moderator Jimmy Kimmel to talk about the work that went into closing the “Ozark” book. Watch the video Q&a above.
Series star Bateman exuded his usual amount of charm as he mused about the years-long process of getting to know his character, Marty Byrde.

The third season of “Ozark” on Netflix opens with a scene separate from the main narrative of the Byrde family, but which demonstrates the violence capable of their associate Omar Navarro, the drug lord who first appears in this episode after having been mentioned since the pilot. Editor Cindy Mollo reveals at the top of her exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) that this scene was surprisingly almost not filmed. She explains, “There were conversations about maybe not doing it and I just kept saying, ‘I think we need it to set up the really dangerous world that they’re working in,’ because when you get into that casino, you’re so thrilled for them that they’ve built this and this is a real world that you need to understand the stakes.” The Mexico-set scene was originally planned to be shot in Los Angeles, but was...

“Ozark” has a signature blue esthetic, but David J. Bomba looked to upend “the look of the show” when he took over as production designer, noting in his exclusive interview with Gold Derby (watch the video above) that this was largely what sold him on joining the Jason Bateman vehicle in its third season after a career in film. Bomba says about undertaking the set of the titular Missouri Belle riverboat casino, “Specifically, I asked him, ‘Are we going that blue-cyan color with this?’ And he said, ‘Absolutely not, I want to introduce a new element. This is supposed to be brand new construction, brand new casino, so let’s introduce a pretty strong contrast, palette-wise.’ So we went with a red and a gold theme for the color and the palette.”
“Ozark” has been nominated for both previous seasons that have contended at the Emmys in the Best Contemporary Production Design category.

When cinematographer Rachel Morrison approached “Mudbound,” there was so much she didn’t want to do. She and director Dee Rees didn’t want to romanticize the postwar South, nor indulge the myth of “The Greatest Generation” in golden hues of a traditional period film.
Instead, building from the harsh realities of 1940s Mississippi racism, they found warmth in shared humanity, weaving a story that features six different protagonists from two very different farming families. A gritty, realistic look would be as inappropriate for “Mudbound” as what Morrison refers to as the “tea-stained” period film they were desperate to avoid.
“What I think makes ‘Mudbound’ great is there’s a beauty in its honesty, even when it’s muddy and everybody is dirty,” said Virgil Williams, who adapted the screenplay with Rees. “What Rachel did was provide a visual window through which that beauty could be seen by the audience.
