Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise, is currently in theatres (you can read our review Here) – and so far the movie has pulled in almost $60 million at the global box office, so we’re probably going to be seeing a Saw 11 sooner than later. In fact, the producers were already talking sequel before the movie was released. But during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter (and also edited the first five films, plus Jigsaw) said he intended for the movie to feel like the final send-off to the Jigsaw character.
When asked about what could be coming next for the franchise, Greutert said, “Well, we’ll just have to see what the future of Saw is. There are so many directions we could go, but for me, there’s no obvious one coming out of this film.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review), playing in theaters now. The sequel blends the old with the new, including relocating the lethal terror to Mexico. Bloody Disgusting spoke with director Kevin Greutert and production designer Anthony Stabley about how the Mexico setting informed the traps and new batch of survivors.
Watch the video interview below, where Stabley reveals what mythology he drew from when creating the production design, and how actor Paulette Hernandez‘s intensity set the bar high for the scenes that followed.

Franchise veterans John “Jigsaw” Kramer (Tobin Bell) and Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith) are back in action in the milestone sequel Saw X (our review). But they’re not the only franchise mainstays that worked to bring the gory sequel to life.
Director Kevin Greutert (Saw VI, Saw 3D), the franchise’s long-term editor since 2004’s Saw, helms the tenth installment from the screenplay by Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger.
Greutert, Bell, and Smith aren’t the only returning franchise vets either; producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules launched the franchise in 2004 alongside James Wan and Leigh Whannell and have been with the franchise the entire way.
With nearly twenty years of franchise lore, history, and experience with Jigsaw and his gnarly traps under their belts, few know Saw quite like Burg and Koules.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with the tenured producers about Saw X and how much input they have on John Kramer’s lethal traps.

Directed and edited by Saw veteran Kevin Greutert, this is the tenth film in the popular death-traps-and-gore series, taking place between the events of the first movie and the first sequel. Happily for fans of the long-running franchise, that setting allows the filmmakers to bring back the series’ strongest asset, actor Tobin Bell, and the result is one of the most enjoyable Saw sequels for quite some time.
Bell reprises his role as serial killer and all-around deathtrap genius John Kramer, who travels to Mexico to undergo a controversial treatment that may be able to cure his terminal cancer. However, when he discovers that he has been the victim of a fraudulent scheme, he teams up with his apprentice Amanda (Saw veteran Shawnee Smith...

As John Kramer (Tobin Bell), a.k.a. Jigsaw, emcees another spectacle of savagery, he tells his victims, “This is not retribution. It’s a reawakening.” The statement would seem to suggest that Kevin Greutert’s Saw X is here to reinvent the long-running Saw franchise. If so, that would make it the third or so attempt at such a reengineering.
Darren Lynn Bousman’s Spiral, for one, was probably the closest we got to a quasi-prestige iteration of a Saw film, what with its bluntly ambivalent cop rhetoric and gliding SteadiCam shots. But, for the most part, that film was like any other Saw, even if its queasiness was less in its outright violence and more in the blithe way it used politically loaded imagery: pigs and their guts, literally and metaphorically, spilled all over the place.

Saw X, the tenth film in the Saw franchise, is set to reach theatres in just a few days – on September 29th, to be exact. "It was our desire to make a film that feels more like the early Saw movies." Lionsgate has debuted a new behind-the-scenes featurette for Saw X, the next sequel in the seemingly never-ending Saw franchise of gruesome, gory, horror movies. The first trailer arrived during the summer, and the film is ready to open in theaters very soon - just in time for spooky season. Set between the events of Saw I + II, Jigsaw travels to Mexico in hopes of trying an experimental procedure that may cure him. He later discovers that it was all just a hoax, leading him to arrange another elaborately grotesque series of fatal games for the scammers. Armed with a newfound purpose, the infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way with deranged, and ingenious, traps. In addition to Bell, this also stars Shawnee Smith,...

Director Kevin Greutert says that with Saw X, their goal was to make a new addition to the franchise that felt like the early Saw movies. Greutert provided a sneak peek behind the scenes at the upcoming tenth film of the popular horror franchise in a two-minute “Legacy” featurette released nine days out from the film’s theatrical debut.
Saw franchise producers Mark Burg and Oren Koules described the September 29, 2023 release as being how they envision Saw II, with the action taking place just weeks after the end of the original Saw. Because of that, it was necessary to replicate the look of the original films down to the grittiness and color palette. “We’re working with a cinematographer here [Nick Matthews] who has just done a fabulous job,” says franchise star Tobin Bell.
Joining Bell in Saw X are Shawnee Smith, Synnøve Macody Lund, Steven Brand, Michael Beach, and Renata Vaca.

We ended last week with the first-ever clip from Lionsgate’s forthcoming Saw X, which gave us our first extended look at one of Jigsaw’s new devices – the eye trap!
The surprise with this contraption is that the game is actually connected to the character’s fingers, snapping them back with each turn of a dial. With the clip came a brand new image that gives a nice and clear look at Jigsaw’s menacing game, which appears to have already snapped three of the “victim’s” fingers.

“I’d like to play a game. Perhaps one that addresses those ‘sticky’ fingers of yours,” Jigsaw exclaims in the very first clip from Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.
In the clip, a man wakes up strapped to a chair. There’s a device clamped around his eyes and some sort of mechanics attached to all of his fingers. John Kramer, aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), identifies this man as a hospital custodian and offers him 60 seconds to complete this “game” or he’ll lose his eyesight – and maybe his life. When he turns the dial, a finger is cranked back, breaking it instantly. What happens to his eyes when he fails?!

Lionsgate is clearly very aware of just how popular the Amanda Young character, played by Shawnee Smith, is with fans of the Saw franchise. Although she was killed off in Saw III, she’s back for the new sequel Saw X, since the film’s story takes place between the events of the first film and Saw II – and since she’s back, she’s getting a good amount of attention in the film’s marketing. For example: Rotten Tomatoes just got the first look at a new image from Saw X, and the focus of the image is Smith as Amanda. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.
Saw X reaches theatres on September 29th.
Amanda isn’t the only dead character who’s back in a big way for this sequel, as John “Jigsaw” Kramer, played once again by Tobin Bell, is front and center here.

John “Jigsaw” Kramer, played once again by Tobin Bell, is front and center in the upcoming Saw sequel Saw X – which is indeed the tenth installment in the franchise, but takes place between the events of the first movie and Saw II. Director Kevin Greutert, who previously directed Saw VI and Saw: The Final Chapter, has said that we’ll be seeing more of Jigsaw in this new movie than in any other Saw movie… and due to its place in the timeline, we’ll also be seeing the return of Shawnee Smith as his protégé Amanda Young. That’s why a new promo posted on the official Saw social media account celebrates the fact that we’ll be seeing the return of Amanda when Saw X reaches theatres on September 29th:
Did you miss her? Amanda returns on September 29. #SawX pic.twitter.com/qz1DtZs2wv

Coming to theaters on September 29, tenth franchise installment Saw X celebrates the 20th anniversary of the franchise with a direct sequel to the original classic. Tobin Bell is back as Jigsaw, who is still very much alive at this stage on the timeline, and director Kevin Greutert promises in a new chat with Empire that he takes center stage this time around.
“Kramer is the centre of the story,” Kevin Greutert tells Empire, who goes on to explain that Saw X will feature John Kramer aka Jigsaw “more than in any other Saw.”
Greutert elaborates, “[Saw X] is an emotional journey that you go on with John Kramer, and less a slaughterhouse that you experience from the point of view of the victims.” He also notes during his chat with Empire, “Obviously there will be people that can’t handle it, but I think it has a good chance of...

The new film in the Saw franchise – which is going by the title Saw X since it’s the tenth installment – is set to reach theatres on September 29th, and it’s said to be the longest Saw movie yet. Judging by the rating it has just received from the Motion Picture Association, it sounds like it’s going to be delivering plenty of the stuff Saw fans want to see over the course of that extended running time, as it has earned an R rating for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use. The frequently used tagline has been “If it’s Halloween, it must be Saw“, but it could just as easily be “If it’s grisly bloody violence and torture, it must be Saw“.

The Saw franchise returns to the big screen in less than one month with brand new movie Saw X, the events of which take place between the original Saw movie and its first sequel.
Tobin Bell and Shawnee Smith both return for Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.
The film has been officially rated “R” by the MPA this week for…
“Sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and some drug use.”
It’s interesting to note that the MPA listing for Saw X lists Jigsaw 2 as an alternate title for the film. Given the new movie is very much a Jigsaw-centric tale, that seems fitting.
The cast for Saw X also includes Renata Vaca (“Midnight Family”), Paulette Hernandez (“Crown of Tears”), Joshua Okamoto (“Control-z”), Octavio Hinojosa (Come Play With Me), Synnøve Macody Lund (Ragnarok), Steven Brand (The Sandman) and Michael Beach (Dahmer).

The trailer for the new film in the Saw franchise – which is going by the title Saw X since it’s the tenth installment – arrived online over the weekend, giving a preview of this story that’s set between the events of the first Saw and Saw II. Now a new image from the film has been unveiled, giving a look at a character who is able to return to the series because of its place in the timeline: Amanda Young, played by Shawnee Smith! The image can be seen at the bottom of this article. Saw X is set to reach theatres on September 29th.
Amanda was previously seen in Saw, Saw II, Saw III, and Saw VI. The character didn’t make it out of III alive (and neither did John “Jigsaw” Kramer).

The official trailer for Saw X debuted over the weekend, officially confirming that Shawnee Smith will be back as franchise villain Amanda Young in the upcoming movie.
This morning, Lionsgate has released another brand new sneak peek at Saw X, giving us a fresh look at Amanda’s return. How is Amanda Young still alive, you ask? Well, the upcoming Saw X is a direct sequel to the original Saw, meaning it takes place before the events of Saw II. It wasn’t until Saw III, you may recall, that Amanda and Jigsaw were both killed off.
Smith’s Amanda started out as a survivor of one of Jigsaw’s early traps, ultimately becoming an accomplice to the torturous madman – and as a result, a horror icon in her own right.
Tobin Bell is also back for Saw X, coming to theaters on September 29.

The first Saw X trailer has been unleashed and, along with glimpses of Tobin Bell’s’ reprisal of the long-deceased villain John “Jigsaw” Kramer and his latest arsenal of lethal torture devices, the new preview teases the return of Shawnee Smith’s victim-turned-accomplice Amanda from the horror franchise’s original trilogy.
The reunion between psychotic mastermind and protégé marks the first time Bell and Smith have shared the screen since 2006’s Saw III, which saw the demise of both characters. Bell has starred in almost every subsequent entry of the franchise via flashbacks, while Smith’s Amanda last appeared in 2009’s Saw VI. Although the role she’ll play in this round of Jigsaw’s “games” has yet to be revealed, Saw X has been confirmed to take place between the first and second installments.

"The only thing I have not provided is your anesthetic - but trust me, you will want to remain alert." Uh oh. Lionsgate has revealed the first trailer for Saw X, the next highly anticipated sequel in the seemingly never-ending Saw franchise of gruesome, gory, horror movies. Of course they had to bring back the original Jigsaw, played by actor Tobin Bell, who died of cancer at the end of Saw III (though still played in part in many other sequels). They found a way to bring him back! Set between the events of Saw I + II, Jigsaw travels to Mexico in hopes of trying an experimental procedure that may cure him. He later discovers that it was all a big hoax, leading him to set another elaborately grotesque series of fatal games for the scammers. Jigsaw lives! So do all of his deadly puzzle traps in the first official trailer for “Saw X.” Lionsgate pulled the curtain back on the new installment in the horror series at Midsummer Screen Festival on Saturday evening.
While the plot for the 10th entry in the “Saw” franchise has been kept under wraps, the project has long teased the return of Tobin Bell as the series killer kidnapper Jigsaw. The actor originated the role in 2004’s “Saw” but died at the end of “Saw 3.” Even so, the character was a driving creative force and Bell signed on for several sequels, appearing in flashbacks as the series contorted itself into one of the most labyrinthine chronologies in modern franchise filmmaking.
“Saw X” arrives only two years after the series’ previous installment, “Spiral: From the Book of Saw.” Led by Chris Rock, that entry bore few connections to the existing series.
