Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was bad for many reasons, but maybe the worst decision was bringing back Emperor Palpatine with almost no explanation. Audiences were left confused as to how he survived being thrown into the Death Star II’s reactor core (shortly followed by the entire place exploding) in Return of the Jedi. We didn’t get a decent answer until the novelization of the movie landed in March 2020, which revealed that the falling Emperor “thrust his consciousness” across the galaxy into a clone he’d prepared as a backup plan.
Now, a new piece of concept art hints that an earlier draft of the script might have explained all this on screen. Star Wars artist Adam Brockbank has posted a picture (see below) described as showing “Kylo at the threshold of the cloning laboratory.” We got a glimpse of a gallery of gross-looking failed Snoke clones in the movie,...

Ever since her first appearance in the trailers, fans have been fascinated by Dark Rey. It was kind of a disappointment, then, that this vision of Daisy Ridley’s heroine if she went to the Dark Side only briefly appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Especially as it’s clear there was a lot of work put into the design of this alternate take on the character.
We’ve seen a bunch of concept art for Dark Rey before, but this latest piece is definitely one of the coolest. Artist Adam Brockbank has shared this piece from the developmental stage of the movie on his Instagram account and as you can see, it imagines evil Rey donning the helmet of enemy/love interest Kylo Ren.

The trailers’ tease that Dark Rey was coming in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker blew fans’ minds, with the sight of Daisy Ridley’s heroine done up like a Sith a tantalizing prospect. Unfortunately, however, as with most aspects about the movie, it didn’t really live up to the hype, as Dark Rey only appeared in a brief vision sequence aboard the destroyed Death Star. Still, the evil mirror version of the character was fun while she lasted.
And if you want more of Dark Rey, you might want to check out this intriguing alternate concept art which reveals a different way she could’ve been realized. Concept artist Adam Brockbank shared the artwork (seen below) on his Instagram account, explaining in his caption that this piece was part of some “early experiments” for how best to depict Darth Rey.

Like it or loathe it, The Last Jedi was a beautiful movie. From the sweeping vistas of Ahch-To to the salt plains of Crait, Rian Johnson and his VFX team arguably delivered one of the most visually accomplished Star Wars movies, well, ever. And that’s not a phrase to be taken lightly.
However, with The Last Jedi due to hit Blu-ray and DVD early next week, io9 has returned from that galaxy far, far away bearing gifts – specifically a slew of early concept art designed to showcase some of the sequel’s greatest and most important scenes. And as you’ll notice from the gallery below, these designs from Kev Jenkins and Adam Brockbank and a number of other talented artists are incredibly similar to their respective shots in the finished piece, which tells us that the artwork closely matched Rian Johnson’s vision for Episode VIII.

Adam Brockbank's official website has a great collection of key frame and concept art he created for various big-budget Hollywood films. Let's take a look at the artwork that he created for three comic book movies: Joe Johnston's Captain America: The First Avenger, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and Zack Snyder's Watchmen (2009). For the 2011 Marvel Studios film, Brockbank worked on the interior of the Hydra train, Allied headquarters key frame art, future technologies exhibit and the army recruitment paviliion. For the 2009 film adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' highly-acclaimed graphic novel, Brockbank worked on Dr. Manhattan's cathedral (elaborate clock-like device) on Mars, as well as character designs for Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), and Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). At this weekend’s Thought Bubble comic convention, writer Andy Diggle (Daredevil, The Losers) took part in a discussion panel called “From Panel to Film” along with John Romita Jr., Richard Starkings and Adam Brockbank, in which the attendees discussed the transition of comics to film and the creative input afforded to the comic creators whose properties are adapted.
And whilst John Romita Jr. had plenty of good things to say about Kick-Ass and his experience of making a movie from the comic, Andy Diggle was less than affable about the recent big-screen iteration of The Losers:
Some of [The Losers] is identical to the comic, some of it is very different. What they changed was the connecting tissue in between the action sequences that I wrote. The same stuff happens but for different reasons, so to me it kind of feels like it makes less sense…
