Everything old will eventually become new again. Of all the various traditions and tropes upheld by "Star Trek" over the decades, perhaps none ring quite as true as that maxim. Don't believe me? Well, in just the last few weeks alone, this final season of "Discovery" has circled back to one of the most famous episodes of "The Original Series" ever made, gone out of its way to pick up a loose plot thread from "The Next Generation," and even drop the biggest reveal of them all: The Breen are back and as deadly as ever. For such a forward-looking enterprise (pun insufferably intended), there's no doubting the fact that the past has always played an integral role in the beloved sci-fi series.
This week's episode of "Discovery" does nothing to contradict that ongoing trend ... but,...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Although Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is focused on a season-long quest for ancient secrets from before the dawn of history, there have also been a few episodes that have been almost standalone in structure. From the time loop in “Face the Strange” to the return of the Iss Enterprise in “Mirrors,” Discovery’s final seasons has episodic stories, woven into the bigger arc. And, out of all of season 5, episode 6, “Whistlespeak,” is probably the most standalone of the bunch.
In order to retrieve the latest clue to the Progenitor tech, the USS Discovery jumps to the planet Halem’no, a pre-warp planet. Here, Burnham and Tilly have to go undercover to not only find the clue, but also, repair some concealed technology. Along the way, Discovery pays homage to The Original Series, the prequel series Enterprise, and beyond. Here are the biggest Star Trek...

Black alert! This article discusses spoilers for the latest episode of "Star Trek: Discovery."
There are two undeniable givens in the "Star Trek" universe: all Starfleet captains must accept the inevitability of encountering a no-win situation (aka the Kobayashi Maru test), and you never, ever violate General Order 1, aka the Prime Directive. While both are entrenched parts of franchise lore, the latter has always added a unique moral dilemma that transcends each captain and crew. For the technologically advanced societies that make up the backbone of the United Federation of Planets, there's nothing more detrimental than meddling with the development and evolution of pre-warp civilizations. Despite expectations for officers to treat this directive with the utmost seriousness, however, time and again "Trek" writers have sought to bend and even break the property's most unbreakable rule.
This week, "Star Trek: Discovery" all but jumped at the chance to completely upend established tradition in episode 6, titled "Whistlespeak.

Book (David Ajala) may not be able to get through to Moll (Eve Harlow), one of the crew’s foes this season in pursuit of a great power—and also someone he considers all he has left of family, given she’s his mentor’s daughter—but maybe the rest of the final season of Star Trek: Discovery will be a bit easier for him? Not likely. Not only is there his and Captain Michael Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) complicated relationship, but the crew’s mission is to find technology from a race of ancient beings called the Progenitors who created life as we know it. Below, Ajala teases what’s ahead for both and more Grudge, plus talks about saying goodbye (or not) to Book and the show. Book and Michael’s relationship remains so complicated. "Star Trek" might represent an idealistic vision of a bolder and brighter future, but the last few seasons of "Discovery" have proven that there will always be bad guys with a penchant for muddying up those ambitions in unexpected ways -- even in the 32nd Century. While the Borg, Romulans, and the warlord Khan often have a stranglehold on the title of "Best 'Trek' villains," one alien species in particular has remained shrouded in mystery for decades. First mentioned in foreboding whispers in "The Next Generation" and finally seen in the flesh (well, so to speak) in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," the Breen have played a significant role throughout the franchise in the years since ... yet Trekkies still had to wait until now to actually see what lies underneath their distinctive helmets.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the strangest of them all? In "Star Trek," that title goes to one of the zaniest concepts ever introduced into the canon: The Mirror Universe. The idea of our alternate selves living completely different lives somewhere out there is no longer the sole domain of perhaps the nerdiest franchise in all of sci-fi, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or the best episode of "Community" ever made. Fans might be surprised to find out that many in the scientific community believe the theory is worth discussion these days. But "Trek" put its own unmistakable fingerprints on the multiverse by emphasizing one in particular that stands at odds with the usual Prime Universe -- one that poses a fundamentally moral dilemma between the paragons of Starfleet we know and love,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 5 “Mirrors.”] It’s far from a meet cute and in no way the start of a rom-com, but Star Trek: Discovery does offer a look at how Moll (Eve Harlow) and L’ak (Elias Toufexis) first crossed paths and what led them to become Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew’s foes in the latest episode. “Mirrors” takes Michael and Book (David Ajala), who has realized Moll is the daughter of his mentor, into a pocket of interdimensional space and onto the abandoned Iss Enterprise, where they try to get through to Moll and L’ak with both pairs after the same thing: the next piece of the puzzle that will unlock the ultimate power everyone’s after this season. "Star Trek: Discovery" helped usher in a new small-screen era for the franchise when it launched in 2017 on CBS All Access (before it became Paramount+). Trekkies have since had several new shows to enjoy, including "Strange New Worlds" and the animated "Lower Decks," among others. Despite being the show that kicked things off, however, "Discovery" didn't start off on the strongest foot, and that's something that series lead Sonequa Martin-Green is freely willing to admit.
Martin-Green has been with the show from the very start as Commander Michael Burnham. With "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, the show's last, currently streaming, the actor spoke with SFX Magazine for its latest issue. Looking back with the benefit of hindsight, she was asked if she felt the show had it from the start, and Martin-Green gave a pretty candid answer:
"To be honest with you, no, we did not have it from the start.

When it was announced that season 5 of "Discovery" would be its last, even the show's biggest and most loyal fans had to wonder exactly what showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise might have up their sleeves for one final adventure. That turned out to be no small thing, following the reveal that they would be following in the footsteps of a game-changing storyline in the canon first introduced in "The Next Generation" -- the so-called Progenitors and their role as, essentially, the creators of all sentient humanoid life in the galaxy. At its heart, "Trek" has always concerned itself with the most high-minded of ideas, routinely posing existential questions and philosophical debates. Who knew we'd been watching an origin story? Last week, "Discovery" dropped the surprise reveal that the newly-introduced (former) Captain Rayner had been carefully maneuvered by the writing team to serve as a potential replacement to Mr. Saru (Doug Jones) in the position of Number One, despite firmly establishing himself as something of an antagonistic and far more reckless counterpoint to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) during their near-disastrous away mission. It isn't every day that a Starfleet vessel recruits a new bridge officer at the onset of a critical assignment of top priority, let alone someone who was only just forced into early retirement after a scathing inquiry into his actions. But Burnham saw something in him (even if Ensign Tilly still can't figure out what that is) and with Saru off...

We knew Discovery was different from the start. Pitched as a prequel to The Original Series, the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery had a ton of references to the first Trek series, including Michael Burnham as Spock’s adopted sister, which also meant appearances from Sarek and Amanda Grayson, as well as Kirk’s predecessor Captain Pike.
The most audacious connection to The Original Series came with the revelation that Discovery‘s Captain Gabriel Lorca came from the Mirror Universe, that evil alternate dimension first introduced in the Tos season two episode “Mirror, Mirror.” In that 1967 episode, written by Jerome Bixby and directed by Marc Daniels, an ion storm disrupts Kirk’s attempt to beam back to the Enterprise, causing him to materialize abroad on the alternate-universe Iss Enterprise, part of the Terran Empire.

With an ensemble cast as large as the one in "Star Trek: Discovery," it can't be easy to find a way to give each and every major character their own moment to shine. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is all but guaranteed to play a significant role in any given episode, naturally, as is David Ajala's Cleveland Booker. Recent seasons have even committed to shining a brighter spotlight on the supporting cast at large, devoting much more screen time and emotional heavy-lifting to characters like Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz), and Adira (Blu del Barrio). But Doug Jones' charismatic performance as the even-keeled Saru has always helped elevate "Discovery" to greater heights, serving much of the same narrative and thematic purpose as classic franchise characters like Spock or Data.

Who knew that "Star Trek: Discovery" would be saving its biggest reveal for last? After being responsible for kickstarting the new era of "Trek" on streaming, the fifth and final season is signaling the beginning of the end for the flagship series. But as fans would expect, the opening episode proves the writing team has no intentions of taking its final bow without crafting one last adventure worthy of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), Mr. Saru (Doug Jones), and the rest of the Discovery crew. So perhaps it was inevitable that the biggest twist of the young season would have its roots in one of the most game-changing hours of "Trek" lore ever.
Trekkies will no doubt remember the classic "Next Generation" episode "The Chase," which first introduced the extinct race known as the Progenitors.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episode 1 and 2
The final voyage of Star Trek: Discovery is upon us, and it’s officially the end of an era—albeit one that will likely be met with plenty of mixed emotions. After all, no matter how you feel about the show itself, Discovery brought Star Trek back to television after a decade-plus absence, and played a key role in launching the larger franchise universe we’re all enjoying today. For that alone, we owe it a debt, and a resounding thank you. But it also must be said that Discovery hasn’t always been the easiest Trek installment to watch—or love.
The show struggled to find a coherent identity in its early seasons. A series that originally began as a fairly bleak Star Trek: The Original Series prequel about the Klingon War, Discovery drastically shifted its...

“Star Trek: Discovery,” the flagship series of Paramount+’s “Star Trek” universe, is heading toward its ending. The series, which premiered in 2017, will premiere its fifth and final season on April 4, closing the book on the adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and her crew.
A new season also means new challenges for any Starfleet captain, and IndieWire can exclusively share a new clip from the premiere episode that promises a big one for Burnham. But as her supervisor Kovich coldly reminds her, her mission requires her to neutralize the potential threat “by any means necessary.”

“Between season 1 and season 5 is an entire life.” That’s a real understatement on the part of Sonequa Martin-Green in an interview with Den of Geek magazine, describing the five-season and seven-year journey of her character Michael Burnham, the protagonist of Star Trek: Discovery.
When we first met Burnham way back in 2017, she was the first officer on the USS Shenzhou, a Starfleet ship operating about a decade before the events of The Original Series, and under the command of Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). By the end of the two-part premiere, Georgiou was dead and Burnham was in prison for mutiny.
Things have certainly changed since then. We begin Discovery‘s fifth and final season with Captain Michael Burnham of the USS Discovery, but adventuring over 900 years after the events of the premiere. Yeah, it’s been a wild journey, one that incurred more than a little criticism early...

On one hand, the invention of computers and our entire online ecosystem as we know it means we have easier access to writers, actors, and other artists than we've ever had before. But, on the negative side of the equation, we have easier access to writers, actors, and other artists than we've ever had before. Is anyone else hearing that echo here?
Yeah, let's just put it this way -- in a time when studios are relying on popular franchises and IPs more than anything else, the ever-present specter of, ah, passionate fans with strong opinions looms large over the vast majority of productions. The Enterprise-c has returned! Again!
According to a Variety report about the future of the Star Trek franchise, the upcoming Section 31 movie will feature Kacey Rohl as a “young” Rachel Garrett, presumably before she became the captain of the Enterprise-c. It’s a surprising but exciting turn of events, to be sure, since Garrett has only appeared in a single episode of Star Trek, leaving much of her history yet to be explored. In fact, digging into more of Garrett’s story would be a way to unlock a piece of Star Trek captain lore that’s long been missing despite the Enterprise-c’s introduction over 30 years ago.
Fans first met an older Garrett (Tricia O’Neil) and the Enterprise-c in the season three Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” When that episode aired in February 1990, the arrival of the Enterprise-c addressed a question that had lingered since...

Everyone has their favorite "Star Trek" captain. Each has their own unique skills and flaws, and each comes with their own series and crew. Many argue for James Tiberius Kirk, originally portrayed by William Shatner in the original series, because he was the blueprint for all "Trek" captains who followed. Others are steadfast for Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), who led the Enterprise on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," because he is an excellent explorer, diplomat, and ship's captain.
However, no "Star Trek" captain has faced the same incredible trials as Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), who commands the titular space station on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine." Every other captain, from Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) on "Star Trek: Enterprise" all the way through to Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) on "Star Trek: Discovery," is on board a traveling ship, and while they have different missions, they're all capable of...

Approaching the final season of Star Trek: Discovery feels bittersweet. The adventures of this crew have been unique, primarily because of their time-jumping. The future of Star Fleet always had potential, and Discovery tapped into that well. No matter how you feel about Star Trek: Discovery, it’s been a show that wears its heart on its sleeve and opened the door to new viewers in the process. The final season kicked off at SXSW 2024, and the big screen premiere lived up to the venue.
Star Trek: Discovery Plot
After the events of Season 4, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonnequa Martin-Green) struggles to move on from Book (David Ajala). His betrayal landed him a rotation with Star Fleet, and he bounces around the galaxy, helping relocate those displaced by the Dma. When an 800-year-old Romulan ship suddenly appears, Kovich (David Cronenberg) joins Discovery to pick up its cargo. However, a pair of salvagers,...

When asked about the long journey to Star Trek: Discovery‘s fifth and final season, producer Alex Kurtzman is honest but optimistic. “It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman tells Den of Geek when we chat with him at SXSW 2024. “And yeah, it was an incredibly bumpy first year.”
Kurtzman’s referring to the behind-the-scenes difficulties that plagued the show’s first two seasons. Initially developed by Bryan Fuller, who wrote for Deep Space Nine and Voyager before going on to make fan-favorite shows such as Hannibal and American Gods, Discovery ultimately premiered with Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts as showrunners. By the end of season two, both had left the show, with Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise stepping in as showrunners to right the ship.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" debuts on April 4, 2024, and it is a time of ambivalence. "Discovery" has struggled throughout its tenure, unsure as to what its identity should be, or what its general vibe is. Other "Star Trek" shows always featured staunch, stone-faced diplomats in ultra-professional workplace environments. The "Discovery" characters, in contrast, are teens at a slumber party, if the teens were over-dramatic theater kids and the slumber party was held after they all lost the one-act-play competition. The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery openly discuss their feelings at all times and perpetually need shoulders to cry on. The professionalism of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is long behind us.
But then, that seems to be what the show's fans like most about it. Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) encourages both emotional vulnerability and her crew to approach one another with open hearts.

The crew of the U.S.S. Discovery will sign off on their final transmission this year when "Star Trek: Discovery" comes to an end after 5 seasons. The first "Star Trek" show of the Paramount+ era has gone through plenty of highs and lows across 55 episodes and counting, but with the end in sight, it's the perfect time for the cast and crew to reflect on the best memories they have from years spent bringing the series to life.

"Star Trek" might feel like a property at the peak of its powers these days, but things were very different as recently as 2017. "Star Trek Beyond" had just wrapped up the trilogy of "Kelvin-verse" movies on the cinematic side of the equation, but Trekkies continued to wait for the franchise's grand return to its small-screen roots. Not since the end of "Enterprise" in 2005 had fans been able to enjoy "Trek" television, an over decade-long gap rivaled only by the 13 years between "The Animated Series" and "The Next Generation." Then, "Discovery" arrived on the scene, kickstarting this current era that has since flourished into a genuine Golden Age with multiple shows streaming concurrently.

Plot: The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well…dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

When asked to sum up Season 5 of “Star Trek: Discovery” in just one word, star Sonequa Martin-Green went with “Culminating.”
The Paramount+ series will conclude its run with the forthcoming season, premiering April 4. Although cast and crew didn’t know this would be the final season when they shot it, as Martin-Green tells IndieWire, they are feeling good about where they end things.
“I was moved, I was touched, I think I cried,” Martin-Green said about the moment she read the final script. “…So I just think that it’s special, I think it’s bold, I think it’s beautiful, I think it’s poetic.”
That doesn’t mean she was ready to spill about any specific details such as where her character, Michael Burnham, might end up — or with who. When asked if there would be a happily ever after for Burnham and David Ajala’s Book, she...

Alex Kurtzman looks exactly how you’d expect someone to look at the end of a five-year-mission for Starfleet: relaxed, confident, and ready to bring the ship home. At least, that’s the impression he gives when he, showrunner Michelle Paradise, and stars Sonequa Martin-Green and David Ajala talk with Den of Geek about the upcoming fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery during SXSW 2024. You almost can’t tell this show has faced many trials and tribulations across its seven years on the air.
“It’s been an incredible ride for us,” Kurtzman declares during our chat, but quickly adds, “It was an incredibly bumpy first year.” Only a calm man can use words like “incredibly bumpy” to describe Discovery‘s inaugural season in 2017, the first new Star Trek television series since Enterprise went off the air in 2005. The production of "Star Trek: Discovery," as Trekkies likely know, was notoriously troubled. The original concept for "Discovery," as envisioned by TV mastermind Bryan Fuller, was a "Star Trek" anthology show wherein every season would take place in a different era in "Trek" history. The first season was to take place shortly before the events of the original 1966 "Star Trek" series, while the second would be concurrent with the original series. The third season would overlap with "Star Trek: The Next Generation," set a century later, and the fourth would take the series into the distant future.
"Discovery" followed this mold, but only kind of. The first season of "Discovery" did indeed precede the original series, while its second interacted directly with a young Spock (Ethan Peck) and the pre-Kirk USS Enterprise. Then, thanks to a time portal, the USS Discovery was thrown forward in time almost a millennium, and...

At the beginning of its third season, "Star Trek: Discovery" went through something of a soft reboot, with fans often debating about what worked and what did not. Thanks to a complex season-two story about a malevolent machine intelligence, the U.S.S. Discovery was forced through a portal in time, depositing it in the year 3188, about 900 from their starting point. The crew of the Discovery found the future to be bitter and broken. It seems a galaxy-wide cataclysm — nicknamed The Burn — destroyed every active starship a few centuries earlier. The last remaining scraps of the Federation went into hiding while a vicious crime syndicate, the Emerald Chain, rose to power in its absence. The Discovery, equipped with now-ancient technology, had to fight the Emerald Chain, locate the Federation, and attempt to help a galaxy they didn't understand.

In 2017, the venerable “Star Trek” science fiction franchise had gone a full twelve years without a new series, after Upn aired the series finale of “Enterprise” in 2005. That changed when Paramount released “Star Trek: Discovery” on their CBS All Access (since rebranded to Paramount+) streamer, kicking off a new era for the IP.
Now, seven years later, the series is set to take its own bow. The fifth and last season of “Discovery” is set to premiere this April, and Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the series’ swan song.

At the beginning of the third season of "Star Trek: Discovery," the titular starship was thrown forward in time to the 32nd century, nearly a millennium from its home time. There, the crew of the Discovery found a very different galaxy. It seems that years before, every starship in the quadrant had exploded in an unpredicted cataclysm called the Burn. In the wake of the disaster, Starfleet went into hiding to rebuild, while control of the galaxy fell into the hands of an evil Orion trading firm called the Emerald Chain. The Emerald Chain brought the previously post-capitalist world of Trek back into a greedy, exploitative, money-forward society, which gave rise to abuse and slavery. It would take the crew of the Discovery a lot of wherewithal to combat the Emerald Chain and help get the ultra-advanced Starfleet back on its feet.

We all know the story of Captain James Tiberius Kirk, who for many is Star Trek’s greatest captain. From a humble upbringing in Iowa, he distinguished himself at Starfleet Academy, even winning the Kobayashi Maru. After serving on the USS Farragut, Kirk took command of the Enterprise, the ship to which he returned time and again, even after being promoted to Admiral. After his presumed death aboard the Enterprise-b, Kirk spent time in the idyllic Nexus before returning with his successor Captain Jean-Luc Picard, who convinced him to come to Veridian III and stop the rogue El-Aurian Dr. Soren.
Kirk and Picard defeated Soren at the cost of the former’s life. “Oh my…” said the dying legend as he got a glimpse of the great beyond awaiting him, where no man had gone before.

The 1967 revision of the "Star Trek" writer's guide starts by asking the reader a simple question: "Can you find the major 'Star Trek' format error in the following 'teaser' from a story outline?"
"Star Trek" is a franchise that comes with many rules and dictums, many derived from its late creator, Gene Roddenberry. Other times they came from story editors and producers across the franchise's nearly-60-year history. And all of them are fiercely debated among fans in countless fanzines, convention halls, and chat boards, as well as on social media.
But rules are made to be broken, aren't they? Or, at the very least, broadly interpreted... like Starfleet's non-interference directive by some captains. And, to paraphrase Kirk, risk was "Star Trek's" business from day one. So let's look at 13 times when the makers of "Star Trek" took a risk and broke the mold.

When Paramount+ brought Trek back to television in September 2017 with Star Trek: Discovery's double-decker premiere event, it broke ground on a road that would see the rebirth of the Trek franchise.
Six years later, Star Trek: Discovery has saved the galaxy multiple times; traveled through the mycelial network, to the Mirror Universe and back, forward in time nine hundred years, and beyond the edge of the known universe; and spawned the highly successful spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
In March, Paramount+ announced the fifth season will be the USS Discovery's final mission. We've gathered all the intel on what it'll entail, who's on board, and when you can expect to buckle up and hold on as Michael Burnham and her crew let 'er fly one last time.
What can we expect from the Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 plot?

When Spock’s family visited the Enterprise during “Journey to Babel” in Star Trek: The Original Series, Kirk ended up getting stabbed. When the Enterprise visited the planet Vulcan for Spock’s wedding in “Amok Time,” Kirk almost got choked to death. The point? Vulcan family reunions are tricky!
In Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, “Charades,” when T’Pring’s family visits the Enterprise for an engagement dinner, Spock’s entire biology is suddenly altered by a nearby alien intelligence, and this time, Nurse Chapel has to risk her life to set things right while Pike has his cooking insulted.
Along the way, “Charades” drops several references to the entire Trek franchise, deepening our knowledge of Vulcans, in ways both highly logical and hilarious. Here are the biggest Easter eggs and shout-outs we caught in this episode.

When CBS All Access -- now called Paramount+ -- first debuted in 2017, it was a big deal. Not only was there a new contender in the ongoing Streaming Wars, but a long-moribund entertainment franchise, "Star Trek," was going to return to TV for the first time since the cancelation of "Star Trek: Enterprise" in 2005. In 2006, there was a kerfuffle within Viacom, Paramount's parent company, thanks to the scandal over Janet Jackson's infamous wardrobe malfunction at the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime Show.
