My initiation into Sci-Fi London looked like it was going to tick all the boxes for me: time-twisting premise; Primer-esque allusions to a complex (and possibly unsolvable) narrative; and, best of all, the fact that El Incidente was an original, mid-budget science-fiction movie I knew almost nothing about.
Well, the final result isn’t quite what I just described, but it’s still a far cry from being a cookie-cutter blockbuster, and everyone in the (very enthusiastic) crowd seemed very happy that was the case. Without giving too much away, the film concerns two sets of separate characters in parallel situations: in one, a group of three men are stranded in an infinitely repeating staircase; in the other, the same is true of a family of four stuck on...

The Santa Barbara International Film Festival has unveiled its 2015 line-up which includes films representing 54 countries, 23 world premieres and 53 U.S. premieres. The U.S. premiere of Niki Caro’s McFarland USA will close out the 30th fest. Based on the 1987 true story and starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello, the film follows novice runners from McFarland, an economically challenged town in California’s farm-rich Central Valley, as they give their all to build a cross-country team under the direction of Coach Jim White (Costner), a newcomer to their predominantly Latino high school. The unlikely band of runners overcomes the odds to forge not only a championship cross-country team but an enduring legacy as well.
The festival runs from January 27-February 7.

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

The Similars (Los Parecidos) tells the story of eight different persons who are stuck at a bus station. It's October 2, 1968 and Mexico is about to live the student massacre of Tlatelolco. But that's just the film's background and writer/director Isaac Ezban was not really interested in creating a political piece. He wanted old-school science fiction, so his characters begin to psychically look exactly like one of them. And that will bring some madness, for sure. Ezban wrapped production on The Similars two weeks ago. Filming took place mostly at Estudios Churubusco, Mexico's most iconic film studios. I was fortunate enough to visit the set of The Similars at said studios on August 7, where I got to talk with Ezban and Humberto Busto,...

Mexican filmmaker Isaac Ezban got back from this year's Cannes Film Festival, where his - very, very good - debut feature length film The Incident (El Incidente) premiered, and immediately began working on the pre-production for his next project, the science fiction effort The Similars (Los Parecidos). Movie theaters in Mexico lack genre cinema but Ezban is working his way up to solve that problem, and now Twitch is proud to reveal the first details for The Similars. First of all, we've got the casting announcement: The cast for The Similars (Los Parecidos) is formed by Gustavo Sánchez Parra (Matando Cabos, Amores Perros), Cassandra Ciangherotti (Tlatelolco, Verano de 68, Cantinflas, Even the Rain, Viaje Redondo), Fernando Becerril (Km 31: Kilometre 31, Depositaries), Humberto Busto (Amores Perros,...

In what it feels like the scene with the most personal dialog during the first half of Isaac Ezban's The Incident (El Incidente), the agonizing character of Amores Perros' Humberto Busto shares his thoughts about life in general. "Life is a long highway and what we pass along never comes back", he says to his younger brother while also regretting the fact that he never enjoyed the different stages of his own life and always wanted to be somewhere else. It's easy to connect with this kind of thought as life works in mysterious ways and sometimes you can recognize and appreciate a certain moment until it's long gone. In The Incident, however, things work in an even weirder way and what the characters pass...

After being thawed out by the raising temperatures and the thinning of the ozone layer, a prehistoric dinoshark roams the ocean looking for its next meal after not having to eat anything for about 150 million years.
Another watchable, if disappointing, entry in producer Roger Corman's latest series of creature feature films following the success of Sharktopus. Dinoshark could have played up to the environmental angel of the film's story more strongly. There could have been more campy and outrageous situations for the characters to engage themselves in. The Dinoshark could have been engaged in more innovative action. The film could have played more strongly to the "don't go in the water" element of the material like Jaws and Piranha did. Syfy and Korean monsters, machine-gun-toting Japanese schoolgirls, and some re-releases are the topics of this week's horror titles.
While Dinoshark (directed by Kevin O'Neill and starring Eric Balfour, Iva Hasperger, Aaron Diaz, Humberto Busto, Roger Corman) and Mongolian Death Worm (directed by Steven R. Monroe and starring Sean Patrick Flanery, Victoria Pratt) were on cable TV only recently, they're already here on home video. On top of that Chawz, the "Jaws with a wild boar" offering from Korea, and the hilariously unbelievable Machine Girl are vying for your purse strings all way from the Far East.
For the classically inclined, re-releases of Roger Corman's The Terror with a young Jack Nicholson, The Dorm That Dripped Blood, El Topo, as well as Francis Ford Coppola's Dementia 13 will keep you company this week.

Drag queen Manuel, who prefers to be known as Manuela, is having a bad day. His lover has left, his landlady is demanding the rent, and to make matters worse, his best friend Coca is pregnant. The last thing he needs is to pass as straight in order to please Coca's conservative family, but he's loyal to a fault, and he agrees to play the part of Coca's fiance and father of her child.
The story has some not-so-subtle echoes of La Cage aux Folles, which has already been recycled into a Broadway musical as well as the Hollywood hit The Birdcage. Coca's conservative father is exactly like the hypocritical bluenose played by Gene Hackman in The Birdcage. While this version, transplanted to Puerto Rico, has some amusing twists and a pleasing color-drenched tropical palette, it doesn't come close to the hilarity of its predecessors. While it pleased audiences at AFI Fest and might find receptive crowds at gay film festivals, it isn't potent enough to have much future in U.S. theaters.
One problem is that the nightclub scenes don't have the musical verve needed to set the whole enterprise in motion. In addition, the script is shrill and broad when it should be witty. There are a lot of promising characters, including the landlady and her desperate niece, but most of the actors have been encouraged to play their roles at a hysterical pitch. They need some quieter moments. Nevertheless, Humberto Busto as the embattled hero does have the right pluck for the role of Manuela. The attractive Elena Iguina wins our sympathy as Coca. But Emmanuel Sunshine Logrono as the rightwing father overdoes his character's loutishness; he doesn't find the humor that Hackman brought to a similar role.
The plot lumbers along in fits and starts until it reaches the climactic wedding scene, when it finally hits some comic high notes. In the tradition of classic farce, all of the characters come together, and unexpected fireworks result. When the real father of Coca's child turns up to disrupt the proceedings, Manuela saves the day and wins the affection and respect of all. This scene works smoothly, but it comes too late, and a lengthy, unnecessary coda back at the nightclub dissipates some of the fun. The best elements in the picture are the colorful sets and costumes; they exhibit a flair not matched by the script.
