Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman do not have as much on-camera time as they did during their time as the focal points of Prince’s group, the Revolution. But, in the 35 years since the disbanding of the Revolution, Melvoin and Coleman have stealthily worked three-quarters of their way to an Egot.
They snagged their Academy Award with “Purple Rain” and multiple Grammys in the mid-‘80s with Prince. Their work on “Nurse Jackie” garnered them the Emmy for outstanding original main title theme music in 2010. This year, with their multi-dimensional score for Freeform’s teen psychological thriller, “Cruel Summer,” they could be headed to the Emmy podium once again.
“Cruel Summer” follows the lives of two main characters, Kate (Olivia Holt) and Jeanette on the same days over the course of three consecutive summers in 1993, 1994 and 1995. Kate, beautiful and popular on the outside but troubled and isolated on the inside,...

As part of our newly updated survey of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, we’re publishing a series of pieces on the making and impact of key records from the list. Prince and the Revolution’s Purple Rain came in at number eight. The following piece was originally published in 2016, following Prince’s death.
It didn’t make any sense. He was a young artist with just a couple of pop hits and not much mainstream recognition beyond the kids who watched MTV, which was only two years old.

Prince and The Revolution were pop culture gods in the ’80s when they collaborated to make some of the best-known music of the era — including the iconic album Purple Rain, featuring classics including “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy.”

Music is an integral part of filmmaking, moving the story and touching the audience. Where would iconic movies such as Star Wars, Avatar, The Godfather, or Gone with the Wind be without its music? Would Downton Abbey, Dexter, or House of Cards be the same and have audiences glued to their TVs without music? Would gamers immerse into Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda if they were silent? Movie music has moved us all to cheer, cry, and fall in love for more than 100 years. Yet the vast majority of composers hired to create this vital part of Hollywood’s cultural landscape have been men. Well, that musical glass ceiling is about to crack!

Chicago – The term “throwback” is bantered about with such regularity these days that it loses its meaning. An authentic throwback, however, is the eclectic pop culture store “Shake, Rattle & Read,” which closes its doors at the end of business Saturday, May 21st, 2016. The outlet, an Uptown neighborhood mainstay, has been owned by the same family for 50 years. Current owner Ric Addy is ready to say goodbye to all that.
Ric Addy is a throwback retail hustler, riding the shock wave of the changes to the Uptown neighborhood since taking over the store from his sister in 1986. He began in the record store business, when the wax platter was the music delivery system of choice. After gaining experience from Rose Records downtown, and the Record Exchange in Evanston (Illinois, north of Chicago), he decided to take over the “Book Box” location his sister had run since 1966. For the last 30 years, through...

As Prince's death has reminded us, Purple Rain was a landmark: a film that blended gritty cinematic intensity with one of Hollywood's most eruptive original scores. Released in 1984, the film – which has returned to over 200 theaters since his death – turned Prince into a movie star and grossed $70 million at the box office, making it the 10th highest-grossing movie of that year.
But it's also easy to forget that, over 30 years ago, the idea of making a movie around a pop star – especially a relatively new one like Prince –was considered a risky move,...

Prince didn't give a fuck what anybody thought about him.
You could say that's just what he wanted us to think, but his actions back up my assessment. Over and over he made choices that went against conventional wisdom. In the process, he built a counterintuitive career that made him a superstar, loved by the masses but also respected by such unimpeachable icons as Miles Davis (who compared Prince to Duke Ellington).
Saxophonist, composer, and musicologist Allen Lowe wrote yesterday, "As we pay tribute to Prince and others like him who have died recently, it's just a little too easy to repeat the clichés that describe them as expressing our generation, our history, our current world. In truth, as Richard Gilman said many years ago, what makes an artist great is not so much that he or she is of their time or a part of history but rather that...

What do you say about Purple Rain that hasn't already been said? Not only is it one of the greatest music films of all time, but it's one of the defining films of the 1980s and earned Prince an Oscar. The soundtrack spent nearly a full half-year at Number One on the Billboard charts, sold 20 million copies worldwide and won two Grammys. But as with all things Prince, that's not the full story. A number of truly excellent books and articles have been written about the making of Purple Rain, and we're here to share some of the best bits of them with you.

I probably listen to more scores than most people (or even most film fans) do and I realized that while the various scores filling my iTunes range from action (Loud Noises!) to drama (sad guitars) to comedy (funny guitars!) one fact remains consist across the board – the majority of these scores are composed by men. In a time where the ladies are starting to make their presence more and more known in film (which, let’s be honest, has been a veritable boy’s club up until the past few decades) with Kathryn Bigelow becoming the first woman to win the Oscar for Best Director for 2008’s The Hurt Locker to the ladies of Bridesmaids taking some of the raunchy comedy heat from the boys, it surprised me to see such a lack of a female presence when it came to who creates the music for these films. It was the baby picture that swung it. "I made it my project for months," says Cholodenko, "to go through all these guys and find somebody who stood out – and I did. The donors are anonymous, so you can't get pictures of them as adults, but you can get a baby picture and I remember being really struck by this one. Not, 'Oh, that's such a cute baby', but there was a visceral feeling, and reading his essays and interviews reinforced it. It trumped this idea of, 'Is he intelligent?' or 'Is he good looking?' I thought: 'I'm connecting to him.'...

Lisa Cholodenko talks to Rachel Cooke about her new film, The Kids Are All Right, and the new generation of women directors who are bypassing the Hollywood system
• Read interviews with Debra Granik, Nanette Burstein and Sanaa Hamri
For all that she was once a keen student of gender studies, film director Lisa Cholodenko isn't much of a one for hand-wringing. Ask her about Hollywood and she looks you hard in the face and tells it like it is. Yes, it's plastic. Yes, it's sexist. But what is a girl to do? Moaning will you get nowhere. Besides, the simple truth is that she just does not have any particular desire to make, say, a film about an alien invasion, featuring laser guns, copious gloop and plastic body suits.
"You know, I get asked why there aren't more female directors all the time," she says. "I'm kind of reluctant to talk about it.

I've neglected to mention that Our Miss Anne Hathaway is now an Emmy winner. (The Emmys have so many hundreds of categories, that they have to start weeks before the actual show in passing them out.) HollywoodNews.com: Prolific stars as well as HBO towered over the 2010 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy awards on Saturday afternoon.
Such celeb faves as Betty White and Neil Patrick Harris took respective wins for their work as guests on “Saturday Night Live” and “Glee” in the comedy series acting category. Last night in Burbank, approximately 435 people from the film composing community turned out for the Composers Unionization information meeting that was hosted by the Teamsters Local 399, and moderated by composers Jim Dipasquale, Bruce Broughton, Alf Clausen, and Alan Elliott. Teamsters union rep Steve Dayan was also on hand to answer questions about the proposed Teamsters/Composers relationship.
Online, in print, and in the private circles of our community, there is no shortage of opinions on this issue, and in some cases the battle lines have already been drawn. Up to now, I have personally held off on making my own ruminations public or offering my own opinions on this issue of composer unionization. In addition, the values that were the impetus for me creating SCOREcast in the first place have also motivated me to stay temporarily neutral in an effort to help to facilitate a complete and all-encompasing conversation amongst this community.

Prince's landmark achievement still stands.
Apollonia Kotero and Prince in "Purple Rain"

It's not hard to grasp why Purple Rain was such an event when it was first released, 25 years ago this summer: The album was a dizzying synthesis of rock, pop and R&B, and it still sounds groundbreaking today. (Look back at MTV's coverage of the "Purple Rain" premiere here.)
This was a defining moment for Prince and his greatest band, the Revolution (with which he shared, for the first time, both an unambiguous cover credit and, inside, some co-songwriting nods). The musicianship displayed on the record is exceptional: The arrangements are intricately structured, and the vocal work is dazzling; the electro-percussion is fat and beautifully ornamented, the guitars range from full-crush to feathery arpeggiation, and there are times when synthesized or actual orchestral beds drift off into stretches of harmonic abstraction that's rare...

Photo: Universal Home Entertainment This is part two of my Blu-ray review for both "Heroes" Season One and Season Two, both of which hit stores today, August 26, 2008. In this part I will discuss the special features and more technical side of the releases. You can read my opinion on the second season itself in Part One right here. Yesterday I pretty much slobbered all over the second season of "Heroes", telling how I thought it was better than the first season and how much I felt it was leading us to a fantastic third season with a wide range of possibilities. Today I am here to discuss the special features of today's Blu-ray releases of both the first and second season as well as the DVD features on the second season set. I did a similar style review when Universal released the HD DVD and DVD versions of season one...
