Before 2009, Philip Markoff was a preppy Boston University medical student. At the time, his doting fiancée Megan McAllister told People that he was “a beautiful man inside and out.”
But the perception changed in April 2009, when Markoff, then 23, was charged with the armed robbery and murder of Julissa Brisman in a Boston hotel room. He was also charged with additional armed robberies, each involving a female victim that he met through ads placed on Craigslist.
Markoff maintained his innocence of all charges, and pleaded not guilty. While awaiting trial in 2010, he committed suicide.
The story gained international attention, even landing on the cover of People.

It seems that almost every day there is an event covered through that brings back the memories from the Boston Marathon Bombings. When the announcement came that Peter Berg was making a movie about the events on what happened in 2013 some people had reservations because they felt it was too soon for the people that went through the horror. Then Mark Wahlberg came on board and it seemed that if anyone was going to star in a movie about this event it had to be somebody from Boston that understood the complexity of making this movie. It would be the third time Mark Wahlberg would team up with director Peter Berg with the first two movies being Lone Survivor and Deep Water Horizon. This movie would be different though for Mark because this would be about the city he grew up in and the people that adore him.

It was a recent tragedy that laid the foundations for Peter Berg’s preceding endeavour to thrive off, taking the oil spill of 2010 and bringing it to the big screen in Deepwater Horizon. Now the filmmaker returns, this time casting his eye over the marathon bombings in Boston back in 2013, and tonally, both films are almost identical. Following a familiar formula and approach to storytelling, Patriot’s Day, much like what came before, is distinctive to the filmmaker’s sensibilities – but as both features are compelling, moving slices of contemporary cinema, it’s hard to complain.
Another common strand between the two films is to have Mark Wahlberg in the leading role, this time playing Sgt. Tommy Saunders, on duty during the busiest day of the year; the marathon. Though the maximised police presence can do little to prevent the terrorist attack that transpires, as brothers Tamerlan...

The facts are all-too-clearly etched in our minds: On Patriots' Day, April 15, 2013, near the finish line of the Boston marathon, two pressure cooker bombs exploded about 12 seconds apart, killing three civilians and injuring an estimated 264 others causing the loss of blood and limbs. The subsequent 100-hour manhunt for the terrorist bombers, Chechen brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is enacted in Patriots Day, a raw, riveting, emotionally wrenching docudrama from Peter Berg and producer-star Mark Wahlberg. The director and his Boston-homeboy star, who collaborated laudably on the true-life dramas of 2013's...

Filmmaker Peter Berg is not in the business of subtlety. He creates action films at a human scale, and Patriots Day is just that, trying to do too much in its 133 minutes. For much of the lead-up to the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013, the film patches its artificiality with archival footage from the day and concocted footage that looks like it had been. Cobbled together from multiple projects on the subject, Patriots Day is a curious case of a gritty piece of work wrapped in a traditional action flick full of artificial, crowd-pleasing one-liners and manipulative threads documenting the human cost of the bombing. A baby is saved from the attack by a Boston police officer; a couple is separated and taken to different hospitals; the tragic deaths, including a seven-year-old child. This film crams a Netflix mini-series’ worth of material into a sweeping theatrical feature that attempts to be...

With Patriots Day, Peter Berg translates national tragedy to cinema screens with power and purpose for the second time this year – yet the question for many is with wounds still healing, do we really need to be subjected to recreations of a hateful act still fresh in our nation’s history? Personally, I wasn’t in attendance, instead watching live-feeds from my desk at work until the manhunt concluded days later, but cries of exploitation are hard to discredit. As a filmmaker, Berg specializes in making audiences feel something, by finding the human heartbeat in stories – but that doesn’t change subject and reality. “Too soon,” they cried, with fair cause.
So does Patriots Day pay respect to the city of Boston and those strong, resilient survivors who wouldn’t let hate win? From an outsider’s perspective, yes it does. Berg makes Patriots Day about a state and its people,...

John Goodman is one of the great American actors and never gets enough credit. Somehow stately and understated, Goodman’s an unmistakable one-man show, whose baritone voice and generous build allow him to oscillate between gentle giant and hulkish beast — often settling for something in between.
That makes his particular talents hard to categorize. In some respect that’s a byproduct of his filmography, which encompasses both flashy blockbusters and elegant dramas. Even when he’s the best part of a movie, he rarely dominates it; he’s a familiar face in search of a vessel.
With “10 Cloverfield Lane,” however, Goodman found an ideal outlet for his talents. He’s the longest of Oscar long shots, but that’s plenty to justify examining exactly what he pulled off here, and why it speaks to a career that’s never quite wholly appreciated.

Honoring the Boston Police Department was at the forefront of Mark Wahlberg’s mind when he set out to make his new film Patriot’s Day.
The film tells the story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and the city’s response in its aftermath. With three people killed and more than 300 wounded in the attack, it was imperative for Wahlberg and the filmmakers behind Patriot’s Day to tell the story with respect to those involved.
In the clip above, debuted exclusively on People, the actor gives insight into his onscreen character, who is based off of several real heroes from the Boston Police Department.

For the third time in as many years, director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg will collaborate to present another true-life account of heroism, tragedy and the power of the human spirit. In 2013, it was Lone Survivor that brought both creatives together, and the pair have since reteamed for the white-knuckle ride known as Deepwater Horizon.
Touting an all-star ensemble and some truly edge-of-your-seat action sequences, Horizon was arguably better than it had any right to be, documenting the true tale of heroism buried beneath the messy Bp oil spill of 2010. A new trailer has been released for Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg's upcoming film Patriots Day. It's a powerful trailer for the film, which tells the true story of the tragic Boston Marathon bombing that took place back in 2013. Three civilians were killed in the attack and 264 others were injured. The movie not only centers on the attack but also the intense manhunt that followed to capture the people responsible.
Berg is a solid filmmaker and I've really enjoyed his last couple of films that include Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. He's really good at capturing the American spirit in these films in which people have to courageously come together in the face of terror and danger.

Their first film of the fall, Deepwater Horizon, wasn’t exactly a huge hit for Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg, clocking in at a budget of around $110 million and not even reaching that mark worldwide. They are now back with a new drama, the more modestly budgeted Patriots Day. Centering around the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, it specifically follows Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman) and officers under in his department such as Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg).
Featuring a score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and Gone Girl), a new trailer has now arrived. With a starry world premiere for “Patriots Day” set to close AFI Fest 2016 this Thursday, distributor CBS Films has released the official trailer, and it’s as emotional as one would expect from a drama centering around the events of the Boston Marathon Bombing. The film is the second collaboration between Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg to hit theaters this year, following “Deepwater Horizon in September. Along with “Lone Survivor,” the duo have become Hollywood’s go-to source for true stories of American heroism, and “Patriots Day” certainly continues the trend.

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr. Fletcher (Betty Buckley), there remains one still submerged who is set to materialize and dominate all the others. Compelled to abduct three teenage girls led by the willful, observant Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him — as well as everyone around him — as the walls between his compartments begin to shatter apart.
Following last year’s The Visit, Shyamalan reunites with producers Blum and Marc Bienstock and executive producers...

So many goodies in the cinemas candy store this upcoming Awards Season! Oh,boy, oh boy.
It’s “Good Movie Season” when we get Hollywood heavy-hitters (both top popcorn entertainment and Oscar wannabees), and the best of the film festival circuit, most recently from Toronto. Many films will have an awards qualifying run in 2016 and open officially in 2017.
While we have not seen some of these (although we have seen some trailers), some movies are sure to disappoint. That said, here is Wamg’s list of highly-anticipated films, both big blockbuster entertainment and seriously meaty cinema.

The Sherlock supreme becomes the sorcerer supreme as one of the founding Marvel comics heroes finally arrives in the Marvel “movie-verse”.
While other Marvel Studios flicks have explored the worlds of hi-tech, Norse mythology, and space opera, director Scott Derrickson guides us through the realms of magic.

Some may wonder exactly what the story is behind Patriots Day, the Peter Berg film about the Boston Marathon bombing, and while the trailer is heavy on showcasing the drama of the event, and making sure you see the people starring in it, it does give you a little glimpse of Mark Wahlberg‘s character.
It looks as though we are going into the lives of some of the figures associated with the rescue/relief effort and the hunt for the bombers.
The crossing guard remark might not be what I chose to highlight in the trailer, but this is clearly a look at the film that isn’t after revealing too much, so there might not have been much to work with.
Either way, this is one to watch for, and has a cast that should be able to give us something compelling, especially with John Goodman and J.K. Simmons involved in key roles.

The last 24 hours have seen the release of three trailers for upcoming movies, including a brand new (and unexpected) thriller from Jordan Peele, and two powerful looking dramas. Come inside to check them out!
Sometimes, movie news likes to land all at once, with multiple things hitting at the same time. Such was the case with these three trailers, so instead of spreading them out over a few articles, I thought it'd be easier to lump them all together...Especially considering these are the first trailers for all three films. Let's start out with something unexpected:
Get Out comes as a big surprise being written and direted by Jordan Peele (Key & Peele). No one knew he was making this movie, let alone a thriller that seems at odds with his normal wheelhouse. Either way, it looks kinda neat, even if the trailer gives away most of it.

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg join forces again for a film set in the aftermath of the Boston bombing, Patriots Day. Here's the trailer.
The upcoming drama Patriots Day reunites the Deepwater Horizon team of Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg, to tell a story centred around the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. It seems very close to the actual event to make a film about it, but the debut teaser trailer's solemn tone seems respectful of that.
The focus of Patriots Day? Well, Mark Wahlberg plays an everyman embarking on a seemingly mundane day at work that fatefully yields tragedy. He plays Boston police sergeant Tommy Saunders who, lamenting the indignity of some flat-footed, reflective-vest-wearing duty watching over the Boston Marathon, will find himself on the scene of an unforgettable act of terrorism.
Joining Wahlberg in the cast are Michelle Monaghan as Carol Saunders, John Goodman as Police Commissioner Ed Davis,...

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg, collaborators on Lone Survivor, already recreated one real-life tragedy this year with Deepwater Horizon, and now there’s the trailer for their second, similar endeavor: Patriots Day, about the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. Even this first look is a remarkably tense viewing experience, homing in on Wahlberg’s cop in the morning and moments before the explosions. Outside of Wahlberg’s composite character, the footage focuses on the officials who were required to take action following the attack: John Goodman plays commissioner Ed Davis, Kevin Bacon is FBI agent Richard DesLauriers, and J.K. Simmons is Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese, who was involved in the shoot out with the Tsarnaev brothers. The second half is scored to a slowed-down version of “America The Beautiful,” lest the title didn’t convey that this movie is going to be incredibly patriotic. The film is set for a limited ...

Deepwater Horizon was only just released in theatres last week, and already we have a new film from director Peter Berg and starring Mark Wahlberg, about another devastating true story.
Patriots Day depicts the events of the Boston Marathon bombings back in 2013, with Wahlberg starring as a Sergeant, and John Goodman as Police Commissioner Ed Davis. The film will follow the events leading up to the attack, and the city-wide manhunt which followed, to find the terrorists who caused this tragedy.
This is the third time Berg and Wahlberg have worked together on a true life story, following Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon. Their collaboration seems to almost be its own sub-genre, telling very recent real life stories. Wahlberg, who works in just about every genre imaginable,...

With dramas like “Lone Survivor” and “Deepwater Horizon,” Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg have committed themselves to bringing true stories of American heroes to the big screen. The latter is now playing in theaters nationwide, but that’s not the last we’ll see of the pair this year. Hitting select theaters this Christmas, “Patriots Day” finds the filmmaking team tackling the events of the Boston Marathon Bombing.
The film centers around Mark Wahlberg’s Sergeant Tommy Saunders, a composite character based on real members of the Boston Police Department, who leads the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bomber. His efforts are supported by Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon) and Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons).

Suddenly one of the most prolific pairings working in cinema, Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have teamed again — as director and star, respectively — for Patriots Day. The story concerns an account of the events — leading up to, during, and after — the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, specifically following Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman) and officers under in his department such as Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg).
Starting with 2013’s Lone Survivor, Berg and Wahlberg’s real-life-to-screen collaboration began as a critically successful and commercially viable output, although this past weekend’s $20 million take for Deepwater Horizon didn’t come close to its $100 million-plus budget. However, Patriots Day, which has a score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, certainly has a more modest budget, so we’ll see if this recreation of another harrowing event connects more with audiences come December.

The livelihoods of many in the basketball world are reliant on one particular event in the NBA offseason. The draft is a time where team scouts, general managers, coaches and other team personnel tremendously boost their job security, or where they lose it altogether. That is why no one wants to make a decision on a boom or bust player. These players have the potential to be superstars in the league, but they also lack some sort of ingredient required to allow them to reach their potential, that is why they are such high risk picks.
NBA general managers, when drafting these players, are hoping for a development of that missing ingredient, but such a development is not a guarantee, which translates to a ‘bust’. Recent examples include 7’5 centre Hasheem Thabeet, often injured Greg Oden, Hawks swingman Marvin Williams and the list simply piles on. In this year’s NBA draft,...
