We heard through the grape vine in Argentina that something was happening with Daniel de la Vega's newest horror flick Eyes of the Abyss (Los Ojos del Abismo) and this morning Variety is reporting that it has sold to Uncork'd Entertainment ahead of its market screening at Cannes during the Blood Window Showcase. The film follows the journey of a soldier who awakens aboard a warship. Surrounded by corpses and haunted by fragmented memories, she navigates a perilous journey, confronting adversaries and fighting for survival. Set against the backdrop of The Falkland Islands war in 1982 (Guerra de Malvinas if you were on the other side) Eyes of the Abyss is currently in post-production and snippets of the flick will be shown to buyers...

During an exclusive screening on May 19, in Palais K, industry guests will get to see “The Tree House,” “1978,” “Fifteen,” “Eyes of the Abyss,” “Parvulos” and “Remanence: A Voltage Cosmic Tale.”
“One of the highlights this year is the quality of projects and their diversity,” said the head of the program Javier. C. Fernández.
“We have a coming-of-age story among zombie apocalypse in ‘Parvulos,’ a vengeful quinceañera with plenty of gore and dark humor in ‘Fifteen’ or even a horror tale set on a ship during the Falklands War in 1982 [‘Eyes of the Abyss’]. This is different from previous editions, focusing more on stories about exorcisms and urban legends. Now, there are offerings for every taste.”

In bigger picture terms, the major highlights of Ventana Sur were a masterclass by Cannes head Thierry Frémaux and an impromptu speech by San Sebastián director José Luis Rebordinos, heads of the most important film festivals in the world and Spanish-speaking world, supporting the continued existence of Incaa. There words came after Argentinian President elect Javier Milei had vowed on the campaign trail to shutter Argentina’s state-backed film-tv agency if voted into power.
In industry terms, never has Ventana Sur been this big, its final attendance numbers sky-rocketing to 4,300, some 30% up on 2022, beyond even the wildest expectations of organizers, Cannes Marché du Film and the Incaa.
Put that down in part to new sections – Shoot the Book, Fantasmática, and Show Shorts – and enlargement of other sections, such as El Principio del Film and Solo Series. Latin America seems to have a bottomless well of new talent. The biggest reason,...

Nuns, the wrongfully interned and supernatural forces converge on an asylum, playing duelling protagonists, in “Auxilio,” the latest film from Argentina’s multi-faceted genre darling, Tamae Garateguy (“She Wolf”). Del Toro Films has provided Variety with sometimes exclusive, behind-the-scenes stills from the project, currently in the final phases of post-production.
In true Garateguy fashion, the film promises a thrilling dose of psychological distress alongside its gore, and benefits from the keen gaze of its director, highly-female cast and production crew.
Set in Buenos Aires during the first military coup, the film takes an uneasy glance at a myriad of taboos, knocking its moral compass loose to ensure the distress hops off-screen; to stick with its audience long after they’ve left the theater.
Stills show Tamae alongside the cast and crew, her neon-pink hair in stark contrast to the drab, moody grounds of the infirmary and the dark hues of the carefully-curated wardrobe.

Undisputed Argentine shock-and-awe royalty, Tamae Garateguy, is set to begin filming her next feature, “Auxilio” (“Help”). The shoot, an Argentine-Colombian co-production, will start in August and take advantage of locations throughout Buenos Aires.

The premise promises a horrifying glance at an onerous era that saw the country’s first military coup. Nuns, the wrongfully committed and supernatural forces collide to comment on the torture women suffer at the hands of unjust and unrelenting societies.

On the third day, according to the Bible, God made the land, the sea and the forests – most people who grew up in majority Abrahamic societies will be familiar with this, but what they may not realise is that this phrase is repeated throughout the book. Lots of significant things happen on the third day. Jonah escapes from the belly of the whale. Christ rises from the dead. Abraham prepares to sacrifice his son. Daniel de la Vega’s hyperbolic horror film aims to shape a narrative in keeping with these traditions, and one much more grandiose than it appears at the start, but the results are decidedly mixed.
It centres on the consequences of a brutal car crash. Cecilia (Mariana Anghileri) is subsequently taken to hospital, but she’s frantic about the fate of her son, who was also injured and whose whereabouts she doesn’t know. A well intentioned.

Blood Window, Ventana Sur’s Latin American horror and fantasy film platform, returns to the Cannes Film Market this year with a selection of works in progress and completed films, including titles from Brazil and Mexico.
This year’s Blood Window Showcase screens Brazilian director Sabrina Greve’s film debut — still a work in progress — “The Basement of Scream Street” (“O porão da rua do grito”). Ventana Sur’s Blood Window Works in Progress sidebar, along with the event’s Screenings and project pitchings, have firmly cemented the annual event as one of the standout dates for genre cinema in Latin America and abroad. This year, six works in progress will screen as part a hybrid Ventana Sur market which will run Nov. 29 through Dec. 3.
The 2021 selection of works in progress can, in some ways, be seen as a return to form for the event. Over the past several years, the types of films screened in the section have diversified to include science fiction, fantasy and thriller propositions, in addition to the traditional horror flicks on which it was founded. For 2021, however, terror is the name of the game once again, with all six films self-defining as either horror, thriller or a combination of the two genres.
Also notable is the impressive spread of countries contributing to the section.

Chile’s Sanfic Industria, the industry section of the Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic), and Grupo Morbido, the Mexican horror conglomerate, have unveiled details for the 2021 Sanfic-Morbido industry events unspooling in early November, as well as a special poster designed by Chilean-Ecuadorian artist Alberto Montt to mark the occasion.
In August 2019, Sanfic and Grupo Morbido announced a collaborative venture which would see Grupo Morbido founder and CEO Pablo Guisa attend and participate in a dedicated genre project section at the South American festival. Later that year, the first ever Sanfic Morbido Fest prize was awarded to Pilar Díaz, producer of Florencia Dupont’s “Aracne.”
Their arrangement was expanded upon in February 2020, when the two organizations embarked on a joint horror initiative to promote and grow the genre cinema industry in Chile and South America at large. Like so many best laid plans at that time, however, arrangements were thrown into upheaval by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Quebec’s Fantasia Festival has unveiled the third and final wave of titles set to screen at this year’s 25th edition and announced that Takashi Miike’s latest feature “The Great Yokai War – Guardians,” will close the festival. The world premiere of Julien Knafo’s Quebec zombie flic “Brain Freeze” will open the festival following an Aug. 4 pre-fest screening of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad.”
“The Great Yokai War- Guardians” is the follow-up to Fantasia 2006 opener “The Great Yoki War,” and unspools in a fantasy world of Japanese demons, kaiju and pop culture references which proved a hit in Montreal the first time around.
Other key titles featured in the third wave lineup include Lee Won-tae’s “The Devil’s Deal,” his first film since “The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil” won Sitges’ best film award in 2019. BAFTA-winner Paul Andrew Williams’ (“Murdered for Being Different”) “Bull,” a revenge thriller,...

With the pandemic still impeding world travel, the Cannes Film Festival chose five key cities for its satellite events, with Mexico City, Beijing, Melbourne, Seoul and Tokyo screening a selection of titles world premiering at the French event.
From July 8 to 16, Mexico City’s Diana arthouse cinema, of giant exhibition circuit Cinepolis, has hosted a dozen Cannes titles that were not available online.
In a statement, Cannes director general Thierry Fremaux said: “This exceptional year gives us the chance, for the first time, to present the films of the Cannes Selection to Mexican buyers in a theater in Mexico City, while the festival takes place in Cannes. I have no doubt that these screenings will help the films find a distributor.”
“With the realization of this important event, Mexico is confirmed as a vital business platform in the audiovisual industry,” said Cannes en Cdmx producer Daniel de la Vega.

Personally, I'm trying to stay out of Hell. According to the poster for On the 3rd Day, though, "Hell Is Coming," no matter what, which scares me already, a feeling that is reinforced by the trailer. Directed by Daniel de la Vega, On the 3rd Day comes from Argentina, a lovely country that I have only visited once, briefly, back in the 90s. I'm sure the country has been through some hard times, but I'd never call it anything close to Hell. Well, neither did Cecilia, but then this happened ... "Cecilia and her son embark on a journey. Directed by Daniel de la Vega (Dead End) and Pablo Parés (Plaga Zombie), Spanish language horror I Am Toxic was also penned by the two directors along with Paulo Soria. It’s a story of a man lost in a world of death and impending doom, fighting and running for his life. It’s safe to say I was very curious about this movie and I was right to be. It’s a very peculiar film, and there are some incredibly unique and bizarre things going on.

Ventana Sur’s Blood Window Works in Progress Screenings and Spotlight on International Projects sections have become standout events on the global genre films calendar. The event has matured in stature, but in content as well, featuring high-end content and expanding from a straight horror event to other genre areas such as science fiction and fantasy.
Internationally, the event has embarked on partnerships with the likes of Sitges Film Festival in Spain, Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea and the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (Bifff) in Belgium.
In recent years Blood Window has been less about the blood and more about the window into what haunts humanity. Science fiction and fantasy allegories have come into vogue, and while there is still plenty to be afraid of in Blood Window’s selection, there is more to think about.
As is the case every year, San Sebastian Film Festival...

This low-budget homage to “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “I Am Toxic” (“Soy Tóxico“) has all the typical dystopian traits: arid wastelands, sepia tones, gruff apocalyptic shouting. Under clear influence from George A. Romero and Joe Dante, South American horror stalwarts Pablo Parés and Daniel de la Vega have produced a hostile imaginary, an Argentina both primitive and futuristic.

It's every mother's worst nightmare: the abduction of her child and the panic and desperation that immediately ensue. The prolific writing duo of Adrian and Ramiro Garcia Bogliano (Cold Sweat, Scherzo Diabolico) and noted Argentinian genre director Daniel de la Vega (Necrophobia) play to a genre audience by infusing their film with blood and gore and supernatural elements. But make no mistake: White Coffin is primarily a film about a mother's resolve in the face of unimaginable despair and the lengths she will go to to save her child.

Of all the countries in Latin America it is Argentina which has most wholeheartedly embraced genre film in recent years, with a handful of talented young filmmakers driving a push towards horror film in that country that has since spilled out into surrounding areas while finding great success around the world in international festivals. And amongst that core group, Daniel De La Vega was one of the first - his filmography reaching back into the 1990s and boasting titled such as Jennifer's Shadow which found distribution around the globe and proved to the locals that you could actually do this. We’ve covered a good amount of Argentinian horror film in these pages in the past and the more we do the more I realize just how interconnected the film scene is there, and just how supportive many of the key players are of each other’s work. Case in point: upcoming title Lo Siniestro. The film was directed by Sergio Mazurek with producing duties handled by Hernan Findling (director of Breaking Nikki), cinematography by Daniel De La Vega (director of Death Knows Your Name) and some of the script writing chores handled by Nicanor Loreti (director of El Kuervo). Oh ... and the lead actor? That’s Luis Ziembrowski, co-director of The Owner. See what I mean?
