Being a family member is a role that changes all the time. Hungarian filmmaker Sári Haragonics has been reflecting on these shifts based on her own experience, losing her mother 13 years ago. In her graduation short “Coming Face to Face,” shot three years after her mother’s death, Haragonics intertwined home-movie footage with scenes of a summer holiday with her father and brother, as they deal with grief and guilt. Now, 10 years later, she is in the advanced stages of another project piecing together how familial dynamics morph over time.
“Maybe it’s the next step after grief,” says Haragonics, describing the project to Variety before Thessaloniki Documentary Festival’s Industry event. “Don’t Worry Sári” was pitched last week at the Agora Docs in Progress and won the 119 Marvila Studios Award for sound mixing services. Exclusive: The Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival’s industry-focused Agora section has selected 12 projects from 11 countries for this year’s Thessaloniki Pitching Forum and 11 films from 16 countries for the Agora Docs in Progress sidebar. Scroll down for the full list of projects.

The re-shaped Thessaloniki Pitching Forum is the festival’s co-financing and co-production forum for documentaries in development. Recent projects that have passed through the program include Boylesque, which premiered at Hot Docs 2022, Dead Sea Guardians, which premiered at Haifa Iff (2021) and was screened in Thessaloniki (2022), Karaoke Nation premiered at Cph: Dox (2022), A Steady Job premiered at Visions du Reel (2022), We Will Not Fade Away premiered at Berlinale 2023 and Mighty Afrin (Greece) premiered at Thessaloniki Idf 2023 and won the WWF Award.

The panel has been announced for Ifi's Stranger Than Fiction Festival Jury. Then festival's The early bird deadline has been extended to Friday, April 17th, while the final submission deadline is now Monday May 4th 2009. Ifi's Stranger Than Fiction Documentary Film Festival, this year taking place in it's new June slot (18th – 21st) will see the following six industry experts come together to form the festival's panel: Director Lenny Abrahamson (Garage); David Rane – film producer, and director of the Guth Gufa Documentary Festival in Gortahork, Donegal; Boris Despodov – Bulgarian director of the award winning doc 'Corridor #8,'; Micheal O Meallaigh – Head of commissioning in TG4; Alan Maher – the Irish Film Board's production executive in charge of documentary film; and veteran film maker Bob Quinn (Poitín).
