Showtime
There is so much happening in Showtime now streaming on Disney+Hotstar, sometimes all in a bunch, that the end product about the rangmanch that’s showbiz leaves us with a lot to munch but nothing really to chew on.
Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatics, Showtime ingests some enticing energy and a vestige of vigour in its vinegary plot. But some of the vital plot points are hard to digest—for instance, a young television film critic makes bold to trash a big budget movie after being bribed and the producer hands over his production house for her to run. Wow!
Aisa sirf cinema mein hota hai. Don’t look for signs of real-life Bollywood personalities here. This is not Jubilee. It is a jubilant saucy tongue-in-cheek peep into showbiz shenanigans. The screenplay does’t dig deep into the dirt. It scratches the surface and gives us no real-life references.

The trailer for the second season of the International Emmy nominated show, ‘Made in Heaven’, which was unveiled on Tuesday promises riveting storytelling laced with grandeur, drama, dark secrets, and the societal problems that cut across the spectrum and class.
The trailer was launched at a five star property in Mumbai’s Santa Cruz area and saw a heartfelt performance by the band Bombay Brass on the beautifully decorated set ahead of its launch.
The trailer begins on an aesthetic note with all things beautiful and elite, bringing a bit of nostalgia from the Zoya Akhtar directorial ‘Dil Dhadakane Do’. It shows the drama in elite circles surrounding big fat weddings.
This time Shobhita and Arjun’s titular wedding planning establishment has new entrants most notably in the form of Mona Singh’s character of the auditor who comes with no filter and puts things as they are without a grain of sugar coating.

Blind (JioCinema)
Okay, so first things first. Blind is remake of a Korean film. It is not the first Indian remake of the 2011 film. In 2021, there was a Tamil version Netrikann. Prior to that, there was a Chinese and Japanese version as well.
This is to say, Blind is popular subject for remakes. The Hindi one, just out on the free-for-all JioCinema platform, is not as powerful as Netrikann. But I must say Sonam Kapoor Ahuja looks as pretty playing blind as Nayanthara in the original.
The underrated Purab Kohli is the serial killer on the prowl. Not enough bite to his bark. There is so much barking going on, what with a friendly canine playing a pivotal role. The plot has a few heartstopping moments of suspense especially when the killer gives the blind heroine a ride on a car where he has a dead woman in the trunk.

Mumbai, July 7 (Ians) Crime thrillers are engaging and often edge-of-the-seat experiences that do not necessarily have great performances. The first requirement of such a film is that all the characters — from the suspects to the law enforcers — need to be convincing.
A remake of the Korean thriller ‘Blind’ (2011), originally remade as the Tamil ‘Netrikann’, which came out on Disney+ Hotstar in 2021, the Sonam Kapoor-headlined film centres around a blind police officer in search of a serial killer. What’s unusual is fashionista Sonam Kapoor essaying the role of tough cop Gia, who is seen shooting a bullseye at a firing range.
Not that professional actors can’t play roles that demand a complete departure from their screen image; what is important for them is to get under the skin of the character without retaining any traces of their erstwhile screen appearances.

“Sam is going to be so successful,” Ameera (Shenaz Treasury) gushes as she lies between the beds of her two cousins, Samira and Maryam (Salena Qureshi). “And you’re going to be a great doctor,” she tells Maryam. “Everybody’s going to get what they want.” Including, hopefully, Ameera, newly arrived in the US on a six-month visa and hoping to get some help from her khala to find the answer to her own dreams, namely, marrying a Pakistani-American doctor.
The film’s title, with that little “ish” added to the end of America, neatly sums up the world of these young women caught between two cultures: one, overwhelmingly American, into which they are born, or into which they arrive; the second, the culture of their homeland, or their parents’ homeland, with ties to culture that sometimes are in direct conflict with the former. Any child of immigrants knows that there are always expectations,...

Iman Zawahry brings back the feel-good romcom to theaters with “Americanish,” a Pakistani American tale of four lovelorn women in New York City. Khala (Lillete Dubey) is a single mother eager to marry off her two daughters and niece, Sam (Aizzah Fatima), Maryam (Salena Qureshi), and Ameera (Shenaz Treasury). Only there’s one problem – or, well, two, or actually kind of three: finding love is a lot harder than it seems.
For the Asian American International Film Festival, we had the opportunity to talk to Zawahry over Zoom. Zawahry is animated and clearly excited; we’re lucky, really, to catch her on the day before her NYC in-person premiere. Over the next half-hour, we bounce around the representation and romance, talking through the what it means to be a Muslim American woman filmmaker today.
This interview has been edited and redacted for clarity.

Unpaused, with five stories that attempt to define the mood of urban India during lockdown, suffers from that problem. The film starts off on a high note, hits a slump immediately after that, and somehow manages to recover in the stories that follow.
Anthologies can be erratic -- in pace, tone and overall storytelling. When you have multiple directors calling the shots on multiple sets of actors in standalone stories, it is hard to find cohesion of quality. The parts that make up the entirety are often never consistently good or bad.
The uneven quality about Unpaused extends to the film's ability to surprise, too. The top pick, in terms of a unique idea, has to be the first story, Raj and Dk's Glitch. The story is quietly scary in the way it imagines an India in the future that has all but lost its battle with the coronavirus. Covid-...

Raj and Dk have made "Glitch", starring Gulshan Devaiah and Saiyami Kher. It is about a hypochondriac man who meets a strange girl on a blind date.
"Creating 'The Family Man' was a liberating experience for us as content creators, and the assurance of thinking unconstrained encouraged us to extend our collaboration with 'Glitch'. We loved making the short, as we tried a new style and genre! It was a bizarrely unique experience shooting it during the pandemic, and with all kinds of restrictions," said Raj and Dk.

Having washed their hands off all claims to being a Jayalalithaa bio-pic, this web series, with as many dips curves highs and lows as the real character's life, can safely be assumed to take some interesting flights of fancy, even while putting on screen enough meat from the true mart to keep the consumer sniffing and admiring the offering on display.
"Queen" opens with Lillete Dubey doing a "Rendezvous With Jayalalithaa" styled interview with an actress-turned-politician named Shakthi Seshadri.
As ?errrr, Shakthi, Ramya Krishnan hits the right notes from the outset. She conveys all the gravitas, dignity and obstinacy of the original without trying look like the lady who lorded over Tamil hearts and minds for decades.
The series has some terrific moments from the protagonist's childhood where the troubled relationship of little Shakthi (played beautifully by Anikha Surendran) with her mother is captured in scenes that convey plenty without...

ReviewA look into the intensely guarded private life of Shakti Seshadri is a painfully slow reveal of the complicated, inexplicable relationships that shaped her personal and political life. Manasa RaoFor the average person from Tamil Nadu, the name ‘Jayalalithaa’ conjures up strong feelings ranging from that of a decisive, bold woman who broke the glass ceiling in a nasty man’s world despite the odds to a vindictive, unforgiving leader who intimidated critics. While the reputation of the late Chief Minister is hotly contested, the factors that shaped the larger-than-life personality largely remains an enigma. Which is why Queen, the Mx Player web series directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and co-directed by Prasath Murugesan takes on the interesting premise of a woman who rose to unimaginable heights and yet remained a mystery to the thousands on whom she ultimately left an indelible impact. The show, while inspired by true events,...

Director Ananth Mahadevan is all set to showcase Aksar 2 to the audience on the 6th of October. However, he feels that the film is being perceived as an erotica, which it is not. In fact Aksar 2 is a thrilling suspense drama that will keep the audience at the edge of their seats.
“The first Aksar was about a man asking another to seduce his wife, so it automatically lent itself to being a steamy film. But Aksar 2 is not in that genre at all. It is about six people coming together and playing mind games, and then realizing that things can boomerang. It is a classic suspense, old fashioned noir,” explained the concerned director.
The first trailer that was presented to the audience had a couple of love making scenes between Zareen Khan and Abhinav Shukla. However Ananth exclaims that films today do have steamy scenes but...

Having received immense appreciation for the film’s trailer, the makers of Aksar 2 were a tad bit anxious about the reaction from audiences when they recently released the first song titled Aaj Zid.
Especially after the enormous success of the music of the first installment, there was a certain pressure when it came to delivering their first song. Of course they did not disappoint the audience with Aaj Zid which is a rage on YouTube with more than 8 million views and innumerable positive responses!
To this director Ananth Mahadevan said, “Aaj Zid has crossed the 8 million mark invoking memories of the 2006 chartbuster Aksar. With Jaana Ve, we cross further into romantic melody zone and will seal the “album of the year” rating for Aksar 2. The film will be an edge of the seat outing for the full family. Ladies will find themselves rooting for it as will the...
