Damien Garvey and Mark Mitchinson in ‘Rake’.
As a regular in the ABC’s Rake since the second series, Damien Garvey has a ready explanation as to why the fifth series is the last.
“This series plays more like a documentary than a satire,” says Garvey, who plays Cal McGregor, the resilient former government minister, jailbird and now blow-hard TV show host.
“The scripts were written 12 or 15 months ago, depicting the most ridiculous scenes. Now you turn on the TV and what you see is very similar. You can’t make up enough stories like that about politics anymore.”
In Sunday night’s episode Cal was offered a vacant seat in the House and a ministerial portfolio while his ambitious wife Jane (Sonia Todd) has her eyes on the seat.

Screen Australia.s decision to hand back the rights of 1,200 titles to the producers, effective July 1, will result in the reissue on DVD and pay TV of some films and TV productions that have long been out of circulation.

Grab your backpack, apply some sunscreen, and keep your wits about you, because we could be returning to Mick Taylor territory in the outback. Since we first saw him approach Liz, Kristy, and Ben's campfire in 2005's Wolf Creek, the malevolent Mick has popped up again in 2013's Wolf Creek 2 and in two prequel novels, but the rugged killer with a warped sense of humor isn't done yet. John Jarratt is set to reprise his role as Mick Taylor in a six-part series for the Australian video-on-demand service Stan, and Greg McLean, the writer/director of the two Wolf Creek films and co-author of the tie-in books, is developing the miniseries.
A project from Screentime (a Banijay Group company and Emu Creek Pictures), the six-part Wolf Creek series is described as "a compelling, psychologically complex and visually spectacular suspense series driven by a young woman’s quest for justice.

The audience for the drama, which stars Greg Kinnear as a self-destructive criminal defence lawyer, has plummeted since its January premiere, which drew 7.1 million viewers . .How much longer Rake will last now is really a matter of how low Fox is willing to let the show go, " Deadline.com reported on Sunday. Deadline said the show .never connected with viewers. and had suffered by having to compete with three weeks of Olympics coverage on NBC from two weeks into its run. Bojana Novakovic, who plays Kinnear.s girlfriend, has been offered the lead role in Agatha, an ABC pilot about a former convict-turned-big-city criminologist who is...

The premiere of the Us remake of Rake hasn't galvanised audiences, despite a generally positive reception from Us critics.
.
Aired on the Fox network on Thursday night Us time, the show starring Greg Kinnear as a self-destructive defence lawyer drew 7.1 million viewers.
That was below expectations, delivering Fox.s lowest non-Friday premiere rating for a new series . comedy or drama .since Mob Doctor in 2012, according to Deadline.com.
In the key 18-49 age group, the show posted a rating of 1.7, which The Hollywood Reporter described as a modest result.
The legal comedy-drama was scheduled after American Idol, which had an average of 12.1 million viewers and a 3.3 rating in 18-49.
Rake was beaten by repeats of The Crazy Ones and Two and a Half Men on CBS but Fox was the top-rating network on the night, due mostly to American Idol.
Among the critics there was near universal praise for Kinnear.s performance.

With Rake, Keegan Deane enters the growing pantheon on TV antiheroes. A charming, if morally questionable and self-destructive, criminal defense lawyer, he comes to Fox by way of Australia -- where the original drama of the same name premiered in 2010 and is about to kick off its third season. Greg Kinnear tackles the protagonist in his first full-time TV gig since -- can you believe it? -- Talk Soup. But creator Peter Duncan doesn't want viewers to tune in expecting to always root for the leading man. "He's still a charming character and people still love him," Duncan tells

Fox’s “Rake” is a legal drama, but the showrunners want you to know it’s not like all those other legal dramas. For starters, it’s kind of a comedy, actually — or it lives in the oft-frustrating-to-explain middle ground that falls under both genres. Heard of that before too? Well this one is already a hit — just not in America. “Rake” was created by Peter Duncan, originally airing in his home-country of Australia. On this side of the Pacific Ocean, the former attorney-turned-tv-man has no idea how viewers will receive his series, which stars Greg Kinnear. Also read: ‘Rake’ Ep Peter Tolan Mocks.

Greg Kinnear has charmed millions of movie-goers throughout his career with a steady stream of roles in some of the decade's most popular films. Since his big screen debut in 1994 as a talk show host in Damon Wayan's Blinkman (1994), Kinnear has created memorable characters in films such as As Good As It Gets (1997), for which he received an Oscar nomination, Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Sabrina (1995), and You've Got Mail (1998). In addition to a successful career in film, the 50-year-old actor has added a number of TV movies and series guest appearances to his credits over the past decade and a half. In his latest role as Keegan Deane on Fox's Rake (TV), Kinnear portrays a criminal defense lawyer who engages in an ongoing display of self-destructive behavior (we're talking prostitutes, gambling, IRS issues, etc.) outside the courtroom but wins the legal-eagle challenge within. It's a prime property for Kinnear, who is...

Television largely gave Greg Kinnear his start, and as he returns to it, he's doing something different -- yet something he's been doing a long time.
Staking his claim to fame as a talk show host on NBC's "Later," then on E! Entertainment Television's satirical "Talk Soup" set Kinnear up for an acting career that began in earnest with the 1995 movie remake of "Sabrina." He's kept at that ever since, from his Oscar-nominated turn in "As Good as It Gets" and his Emmy bid for playing JFK in the miniseries "The Kennedys" to his current role as Ron Burgundy's rival in love in the comedy "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues."
Kinnear remains an actor in tackling TV on a steady basis again. Premiering Thursday, Jan. 23, the Fox drama "Rake" adapts an Australian show by casting him as Los Angeles defense attorney Keegan Deane. When he's not standing up for clients,...

Stop us if you've heard this one before. Fox's new drama Rake features a main character who, despite being pretty great at his job, is a complete trainwreck in every other aspect of his life.
But unlike the Dr. Gregory Houses or Don Drapers littering the past and present TV landscape, Rake's protagonist, defense attorney Keegan Deane, is a bit less rough around the edges. Indeed, most of the time, he's quite the charmer, which probably has something to do with the fact that he's played by Greg Kinnear.

The first reviews of the Us Rake, which premieres on the Fox network on Thursday night Us time, are generally positive but some critics are undecided about the show.s prospects.
Most praise the performance of Greg Kinnear as Keegan Deane, a brilliant, charismatic lawyer with a self-destructive gambling habit and a tendency to ruin every relationship in his life.
But some critics question whether Us viewers will warm to such a flawed character. .What sort of man (and mostly, woman) will want to watch this playboy? It.s hard to say, but if Fox loses on this dice roll, at least nobody should beat them up over it,. said Variety.s Brian Lowry.

While the "Rake" session at the TCA 2014 winter press tour was filled with information about the upcoming Fox dramedy, the best moment during the event wasn't serious or informational at all.
Executive producer Peter Tolan ("Rescue Me"), who has been a consistently entertaining presence at past TCA events, had a hilarious prepared bit to poke fun at what he was and wasn't supposed to discuss during the panel.
He said Fox's publicity department contacted him a month ago with a list of what the network didn't want him to bring up. Tolan didn't take too well to that mandate, and his response was priceless.
It was scathing and tongue-in-cheek and fantastic, and if it's any indication of what viewers can expect from "Rake," then they are in for a treat. Here is the transcription of Tolan reading from his "journal" about the events that happened on set in its entirety.

Peter Tolan came to the TCA Winter TV Press Tour to talk about Fox’s new Rake, based on the successful Australian series about a charming, self-destructive lawyer with no self-edit button, on which Tolan’s joining series creator Peter Duncan as executive producer. One critic reminded Tolan he’s best known at press tour for his profanity-laced screeds against broadcast TV, and wondered what he was doing at one now. “I’m glad you asked me that question “ he said, explaining he’s so annoyed by a note he got from the Fox publicity department about coming to the tour today as to what he could, and could not, talk about in the presence of TV critics. “I was so upset I wrote about it in my journal.” Out came the journal: Sept 16: First Day of Shooting, Greg showed up drunk and with hooker named Tammy on his arm,...

"Rake" is going to be bringing the antihero to network TV. The stars and producers showed up in full force to the TCA 2014 winter press tour to promote the upcoming Fox series.
The show brings Greg Kinnear to the small screen as a lawyer named Keegan Joye who doesn't have a filter -- or shame, for that matter -- and who gets himself into a lot of trouble while handling challenging cases. Kinnear jokes, "I don't know that I'd necessarily want him to represent me."
"He wasn't built like a typical television protagonist, so that was kind of what appealed to me. The good thing is that he probably doesn't charge very much for representation," Kinnear quips.
Creator Peter Duncan, who also created the Australian series of the same name, promises that "Rake" won't be another network procedural. Though there will be cases of the week, Duncan says that this...

The Us version of Rake, which stars Greg Kinnear as brilliant, womanising and self-destructive criminal lawyer Keegan Deane, will screen on the rebranded Universal Channel on Foxtel.
Due to a holdback agreement with the ABC, the Us show cannot screen in Oz until after the third series of the Australian Rake airs on the public broadcaster. The remake premieres on Fox at 10 pm on Sunday January 19 with a strong lead-in, the Nfc Championship Game, and will then screen on Thursday nights at 9.
Peter Duncan, who co-created the original series with Richard Roxburgh and Charles Waterstreet, tells If the holdback agreement is not an issue, noting, .The ABC has been pretty generous. The Us series won.t finish screening until April. I am not sure when the new series will go to air in Australia but I believe it.s late February, so it.s not going to be a massive imposition.

Universal Channel has picked up the UK rights to Greg Kinnear's legal drama Rake.
Kinnear stars as the lead, a self-destructive criminal defence lawyer named Keegan Joye. Rake will air on Fox in the Us.
Joye is billed as a "flawed hero", who is fighting with everyone around him, including "his ex-wife, the judges, the assistant district attorney, his bookie, and even the IRS, as he relies on his wit and charm to defend the indefensible, both in and out of the courtroom".
Miranda Otto, John Ortiz, Necar Zadegan, Tara Summers and Ian Colletti star alongside Kinnear.
Universal Channel's James Newton said: "Rake was one of the most talked-about series of this year's La Screening and we knew it would be the perfect fit for Universal Channel and our new positioning.

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the second announced yesterday. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on Fox.
While "The Following" proved a breakout winner, Fox had few success stories last season. So, it is going a bit more ambitious this year with numerous dramas, comedies and one-off "event series".
Several pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the family of government-sanctioned assassins drama "Boomerang," the adaptation of Lauren Oliver's book trilogy "Delirium" about a world where love is illegal, the legal interns workplace comedy "To My Assistant," the U.S.S. Lexington-set "The Wild Blue," and "The List" about the hunt for a thief who stole a file containing the secret identities of people in the Witness Security Program,

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

Fox has picked up four dramas, including Greg Kinnear's "Rake," for the 2013-2014 season, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"Rake" is Kinnear's broadcast TV debut, with Miranda Otto and John Ortiz co-starring. According to Deadline, "Rake" is being considered for a midseason launch in the vein of "The Following," one of the few hits of last season. Kinnear will play a "House"-esque criminal defense lawyer named Keegan Deane, described as "brilliant and frustratingly charming ... whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one. He takes on the cases that nobody else will touch, ruled by a resolute optimism, belief in justice and dogged determination to defend those who seem beyond redemption -- much like himself." Sam Raimi directed the pilot, and the show was created by Peter Duncan, who came up with the original Australian version.

Fox has confirmed nine series orders — five comedies, four dramas — for the 2013-14 season, lots of them interesting-sounding and/or coming with a solid pedigree. For the dramas, Rake will star Greg Kinnear as "Keegan Deane, one of life’s great addicts, a brilliant and frustratingly charming criminal defense attorney, whose chaotic and self-destructive personal life often gets in the way of his professional one." It comes with a Sam Raimi-directed pilot and is based on an Australian series by Peter Duncan, who also serves as creator and writer on this version. Sleepy Hollow comes from Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, co-creators of Fringe and screenwriters behind Star Trek and Transformers. It's a modern retelling of the classic tale in an action-adventure style. England's Tom Mison (The Amazing Mrs. Pritchard, One Day) is Ichabod Crane, "resurrected and pulled two and a half centuries through time to find that the...
