This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers.
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine earned its position as a favorite series among fans because of its more complex take on the franchise’s themes, thrusting the United Federation of Planets into a huge war that tested its moral compass time and again. But even at the height of the Dominion War, DS9 also found time to follow Jake and Nog’s search for a baseball card and to check in on a holographic Rat Pack lounge singer.
But even within that wide range of possibilities, the season three episode “Facets” stands out as an oddball. Written by René Echevarria and directed by Cliff Bole, “Facets” introduced the Zhian’tara ritual, through which Trill hosts find closure for their symbiotes by spreading host personalities to others.
Although “Facets” isn’t exactly a “Sub Rosa” level embarrassment, it is a weird episode that mostly...

The wolf pack is hoping for Emmys love.
“Teen Wolf: The Movie,” Paramount+’s adaptation of the MTV supernatural-thriller series, has been submitted for the Primetime Emmy Awards for outstanding television movie, Variety has learned exclusively.
Moreover, the streamer also submitted the film in five other categories: lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie (Tyler Posey), directing (Russell Mulcahy), writing, prosthetic makeup and original music and lyrics (“Lemon” by Tyler Posey). This provides Posey, who plays the True Alpha werewolf Scott and produces the film, three chances for recognition.
Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Emmy predictions in all categories.
An unlikely contender to receive recognition, primarily based on the Academy ignoring the MTV original series, it’s fun to see networks throw hail marys for its genre programming. This year, the TV movie race is expected to have an abundance of genre films such...

“Carnival Row,” the Prime Video series starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, will conclude after two seasons on the streamer. The second season of the fantasy show premieres on February 17, Amazon announced Monday.
The series first premiered in August 2019 and focuses on the titular city of Carnival Row, where mythological beings exist as oppressed refugees in a human-dominated social order. Bloom stars as Rycroft Philostrate, a detective in the city and a half-fae, who begins investigating a conspiracy involving a group of fae known as the Black Raven — one of whom is his former lover Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne). Season 2 picks up where the first left off, with Rycroft off the force but still investigating a series of murders, while the Black Raven escalates their plans to protest oppression in the city.

It's been a long, long wait since season 1 of "Carnival Row" debuted on Prime Video to generally positive reactions (/Film's Vanessa Armstrong reviewed the first season here). Fans have anxiously waited since August of 2019 to find out what happens next in the dystopian fantasy series that doesn't seem that much more heightened than our own world. With the recent news that season 2 will bring the series to a grand conclusion, Prime Video subsequently dropped a brief but evocative new teaser for the next installment of the show.
Focusing on issues of immigration, oppression, power grabs, an ongoing murder-mystery, and even a will-they/won't they romance at the heart of it all, "Carnival Row" quickly made itself feel wholly relevant to our own turbulent political times ... though with the added distinction of exploring these topics through characters who happen to be mythical, wing-sprouting "fae," goblins, fauns, and other mythological creatures.

The carnival is closing at Amazon.
Carnival Row, the fantasy drama series starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne that last aired in August 2019, will end with its previously announced second season on the Prime Video platform.
The series will return for its final 10 episodes on Feb. 17, 2023. Episodes of the drama, a co-production between Legendary TV and Amazon Studios, will debut weekly.
Erik Oleson (Daredevil, The Man in the High Castle) serves as showrunner on season two after he took over for Marc Guggenheim (Arrow) and Travis Beacham, on whose feature script the series was based.
Sources say the series was creatively overhauled for season two, which along with delays from the pandemic contributed to the three-plus years between seasons of the series. All told, Oleson serves as the third showrunner on Carnival Row, which Beacham co-created alongside Rene Echevarria, who was the show’s original showrunner.

Are you ready for a new take on The 4400?
The CW has released a full, 90-second trailer for the forthcoming reboot, and it looks like a compelling new drama.
The series follows 4,400 overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last hundred years and are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them.
“As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the 4400 themselves must grapple with the fact that they’ve been returned with a few… upgrades,” the project's description reads.
“And the increasing likelihood that they were all brought back now for a specific reason.”
The script was written by executive producer Ariana Jackson.
The robust cast includes Joseph David-Jones (Arrow), Brittany Adebumola (Grand Army), Jaye Ladymore (Chicago P.D.), Amarr (American Housewife), and Cory Jeacoma (Power Book II: Ghost...

The “4400” reboot at The CW has cast Joseph David-Jones and Khaliah Johnson, Variety has learned.
The reboot was ordered to series at The CW in February. In the show, 4400 overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last hundred years are all returned in an instant, having not aged a day and with no memory of what happened to them. As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the 4400 themselves must grapple with the fact that they’ve been returned with a few upgrades, and the increasing likelihood that they were all brought back now for a specific reason.
David-Jones will play Rev Johnson, who was raised in a powerful and affluent church family, and disappeared in the 1990s. While he is a man of true faith and compassion, he is accustomed to the power and clout afforded his position.

A cult sci-fi series is making a comeback. The CW has given a straight-to-series order to The 4400, a reimagining of the 2004 USA Network drama. It hails from Riverdale co-executive producer Ariana Jackson and Anna Fricke, who successfully rebooted Walker, Texas Ranger for the CW.
The 4400 is part of four greenlights given by the CW on Tuesday. The network, which last year did not do traditional pilots because of the coronavirus pandemic, ordering four projects straight-to-series, will film at least three pilots in 2021: Diablo Cody and Berlanti Prods.’ Powerpuff Girls; Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship’s DC-themed Naomi; and a millennial nun dramedy from Jennie Snyder Urman, Claire Rothrock & Ryann Weir. All four projects have all-female creative teams.
The 4400 has been a title that the CW chairman Mark Pedowitz has been high on. Its development history mirrored that of The Lost Boys. Both went through multiple cycles...

The CW has made a number of orders for the 2021-2022 season, including a pilot order for the live-action “Powerpuff Girls” series.
In total, The CW announced three pilot orders and one straight-to-series pickup, with the latter being a reboot of the USA Network series “The 4400.” The other two pilots are for the DC project “Naomi” from Ava DuVernay and Jill Blankenship and an untitled religious dramedy from Claire Rothrock and Ryann Weir. All of the projects are created by women.
The “Powerpuff Girls” live-action series was first announced as being in development back in August. Based on the Cartoon Network series created by Craig McCracken, the new series sees the pint-sized superheroes as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting. Will they agree to reunite now that the world needs them more than ever?
The project hails from writers and executive producers Heather Regnier and Diablo Cody,...

On Victorian fantasy series Carnival Row, production designer Frank Walsh was tasked with creating a village for an ancient race of faeries, fleshing out at the same time a sense of their history and culture.
Created by Travis Beacham and René Echevarria, the Amazon drama centers on mythical creatures who have fled their war-torn homeland, gathering as mistreated immigrants within the gritty segment of human society that gives the show its name.
Immersed in the natural world, the Fae flew freely amidst the beautiful, snowcapped mountains of Tirnanoc, prior to their subjugation at the hands of humans. For Walsh, properly establishing this environment was key, in demonstrating the depth and sensitivity of these characters—qualities that set them apart from their urban oppressors. “Because without that,” Walsh says, “I think [the show] was just an odd fantasy set-up.”

“Carnival Row” will be going into its second season without the man who originally created it.
Variety has confirmed that Travis Beacham, whose Black List feature script served as the inspiration for the show, is departing the series. Beacham co-created the series adaptation with René Echevarria, the latter of whom was the show’s original showrunner. Both will remain executive producers on the series.
Marc Guggenheim began serving as showrunner during reshoots on Season 1, but he will now be scaling back his involvement in the series with Erik Oleson taking over as showrunner on Season 2.
Oleson signed an overall deal with Amazon back in March. He was previously the showrunner on Season 3 of the Marvel-Netflix series “Daredevil” and also worked on the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle.” He has collaborated with Guggenheim in the past on the CW series “Arrow.”

Regardless of era, there will always be an audience that pines for originality. Even while snatching up intellectual property that can be transformed into the next blockbuster, networks and studios love to tout entertainment that is truly original. “Carnival Row,” the latest big swing from Amazon Prime Video, ostensibly falls in this category. A curious hybrid of a murder mystery, a love story, and an unabashed political allegory, this Victorian-infused fantasy would-be epic is certainly striving to carve out a category all its own.
But while this eight-part season has fashioned a highly detailed world for itself, immersed in a mythology that spans multiple lands and stretches over entire cities, there’s still something empty in its execution. It’s a show with certainly admirable ambitions, but through nearly every aspect of its swirling narrative, “Carnival Row” is less than the sum of its otherworldly parts.

Early talk about Carnival Row seemed determined to compare it to HBO powerhouse Game of Thrones.
The idea was that fans of the fantasy genre hoping to find their next obsession need look no further than Carnival Row to get their fix.
Carnival Row is no Game of Thrones. It's not even close.
Created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham, Carnival Row follows mythical creatures who have fled their war-torn homeland and gathered in a city called The Burgue. Tensions are simmering between citizens of The Burgue and the growing immigrant population.
If it sounds a lot like a heavy-handed political message crafted into a fantasy television series, that's because it is.
Featuring a star-studded cast, Carnival Row nonetheless plods laboriously along while pounding viewers in the head with a mallet to get their point across.
Essentially, white old men bad, everyone else good.
I wish I could say that's an exaggeration,...

The race to replace “Game of Thrones” has its latest entrant, with Amazon’s new “Carnival Row,” a series that combines fantasy, melodrama, ultraviolence, and strained political allegory. But, for now, the “Thrones” legacy seems safe: This new series reaches for credibility with gruesomeness and exaggeration, falling flat at every turn. It’s painful proof that a genre success cannot be reverse-engineered.
That engineering does seem solid: “Carnival Row,” renewed for a second season before its first has aired, was built to last in our current Comic-Con-fueled universe. Its marquee stars are Orlando Bloom (of the “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” cinematic universes) and Cara Delevingne, and it tells a story whose nastiness would appear, in theory, to be ameliorated by the dreamy magic at its margins.
The show takes place in a sort of fantastical Victorian era in which guns and bombs are real, but...

We talked to Travis Beacham and Marc Guggenheim about creating a world of humans and mythical creatures for Carnival Row.
Carnival Row, Amazon's upcoming fantasy drama starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, is epic in its scope and worldbuilding. Set in a neo-Victorian city filled with mythical creatures, the story follows Bloom's Philo, a human detective working to catch a serial killer, and Delevingne's Vignette, a refugee faerie with a dangerous secret.
Created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham (Electric Dreams), with the Arrowverse's Marc Guggenheim as an executive producer, Carnival Row has a lot of TV experience behind-the-scenes. Den of Geek had the chance to chat with Beacham and Guggenheim about bringing such a complex world to life.
This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Some spellings of mythological creatures and concepts may not be the final Amazon-approved versions.

Ira Steven Behr’s Star Trek labor of love is finally available to the general public. Here’s what you need to know...
If you’re a hardcore Trekkie, you probably already know about What We Left Behind; the crowd-funded documentary that looks back on the legacy of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. And if, you don’t, the best way to describe the doc is that it’s a snapshot of a particular fandom, curated by someone who helped create that fandom in the first place.
Producer and showrunner Ira Steven Behr wasn’t the creator of Deep Space Nine (that would be Rick Berman and the late Michael Piller), but, he certainly is the biggest advocate of the series these days. In What We Left Behind (a riff on the show’s series finale titled “What You Leave Behind"), Behr interviews the expansive cast, crew,...

Amazon has released another full trailer for their incredibly cool new Victorian fantasy series, Carnival Row. This latest trailer offers even more footage from the show and gives us our best look yet at the story and what it had to offer. I’ve liked everything that I’ve seen from this show so far and I’m curiously excited to see how the story plays out.
The series stars Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne and it’s an eight-part series set in a “Victorian fantasy world filled with mythological immigrant creatures whose exotic homelands were invaded by the empires of man. This growing population struggles to coexist with humans — forbidden to live, love, or fly with freedom. But even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate (Bloom), and a refugee faerie named Vignette Stonemoss (Delevingne) rekindle a dangerous affair despite an increasingly intolerant society. Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne play star-crossed lovers in a Victorian fantasy world in the new trailer for Carnival Row. The eight-episode series will premiere August 30th on Amazon Prime Video.
In the universe of the show, Delevingne plays a human-sized faerie, Vignette Stonemoss, who’s part of an influx of mythological refugees seeking safe harbor after humans invade their homelands. While living under an increasingly intolerant society where faeries suffer the prejudices of humans, Vignette begins a forbidden love affair with a human detective, Rycroft Philostrate, played by Bloom.

Even in darkness, hope lives, as a human detective and a faerie rekindle a dangerous affair. A neo-noir fantasy web television series, “Carnival Row” was created by René Echevarria and Travis Beacham—but not Guillermo del Toro who was once involved early on, but not anymore. But it definitely sounds like it sprung from his mind. At the time it was announced, he was on board as a co-writer, executive producer and director.
