In the UK in the 1990s, bodybuilding was a freak pursuit – the domain of weirdos who painted themselves with Ronseal and stretched tiny Lycra hammocks across acres of skin the texture of an Arbroath Smokie in an attempt to resemble Marvel’s The Thing. Nobody knew what a deltoid was. Or a protein window. Fit people were the ones who played a weekly game of five-a-side before the pub. Fake tan smelt of biscuits, and even Sporty Spice didn’t have abs.
When Gladiators first arrived on TV then, its stars were curios. We only saw people like them once a year, pulling a truck on The World’s Strongest Man or being gawped at by Clive James on Television. These demigods with 19 inch biceps and thighs the size of dustbins didn’t walk among us.
Now, it’s all change. Ordinary people “lift”. Protein shakes are sold in supermarkets, and...

Gladiators, ready! The legendary sports gameshow that sees members of the public take on super-strong “Gladiators” in a series of physical challenges is getting a revival on the BBC – what a time to be alive. The new Gladiators starts on BBC One on Saturday January 13 at 5.50 p.m., and is presented by father-son due Bradley and Barney Walsh.
Gladiators captivated Saturday nights in the nineties. The whole family huddled around a too-small television to watch Ulrika Jonsson and John Fashanu introduce four “contenders” (members of the public) who were going to take on the mighty Gladiators, in a show packed with shellsuits, tight lycra costumes, and Hairstyles with a capital H. By the time it reached the final round, aka The Eliminator, we’d all be screaming at the screen as contestants faced trapezes, a zipwire and the ultimate challenge: the travelator.

Dancing on Ice fans are highlighting a discrepancy regarding the first eliminated celebrity.
On Sunday (22 January), the second selection of stars performed one week after the first five made their debut.
It was revealed that, from last night’s celebrities, former footballer and Gladiators host John Fashanu received the lowest number of votes, and was in the dreaded skate-off alongside Love Island winner Ekin Su CülcüloÄ.lu, who found herself in the same situation the week before.
Both performed their routines once again, with the judges opting to send Fashanu home.
However, viewers found this “unfair” as CülcüloÄ.lu had an entire extra week to practise her performance, knowing she was in the bottom two. Fashanu, meanwhile, had approximately five minutes.
The show’s co-host Holly Willoughby said she was “gutted” by the decision as skater Christopher Dean said “nobody has improved more since bootcamp” than Fashanu.

Dancing on Ice star Christopher Dean has broken his finger just days before the new series begins.
Dean, who stars alongside long-term skating partner Jayne Torvill on the popular ITV reality series, shared the news with fans on social media.
The former professional skater posted a picture of his finger in a bandage, alongside the caption: “Yes broken.”
“We were trying the Iron Lotus, but ended up doing a Half Nelson,” he wrote, in a follow-up tweet. “Or did I just fall over a suitcase in the middle of the night.”
The “Iron Lotus” refers to a fictional figure skating move from the 2007 Will Ferrell comedy Blades of Glory.
Torvill and Dean rose to prominence during the 1984 Winter Olympics, when their figure skating routine set to Maurice Ravel's “Boléro” was awarded a gold medal.
The celebrity contestants for the new series of Dancing on Ice were announced back in October last year.

The life of Justin Fashanu, the first footballer to come out as gay, and his brother John Fashanu, is to be turned into an ITV drama from BAFTA-nominated writer Kwame Kwei-Armah.
Justin Fashanu was an extremely talented footballer who became the first black British footballer to be sold for £1M (1.2M) at the age of just 20, becoming one of the most celebrated people in British sport. In 1990, he came out as gay and by 1998, with his football career in tatters and ostracized by his family, he committed suicide.
The drama will weave together the lives of Justin Fashanu and his brother John Fashanu, who also played football and was estranged from his brother at the time of his death.
ITV said the drama is being put together with the support of Fashanu’s brother and other contributors include LGBTQ+ campaigner Peter Tatchell. Dominic Treadwell Collins’ ITV Studios label Happy Prince is producing,...

Unrivalled in its ability to showcase the worst of people, Channel 4's Come Dine With Me sucks viewers into an ineludible abyss...
Dinner parties are rubbish, they're just dinner with added pressure. Why add pressure to dinner? It’s probably the best meal of the day. Come Dine With Me dinner parties on the other hand, are amazing. Intrigue! Underhand tactics! People riffling through strangers’ bedroom drawers! They've got it all.
For those who don’t know, Channel 4's Come Dine With Me entails people from the same area each putting on a dinner party on consecutive nights in the hope of winning £1000. They all score each other out of ten and with any luck, someone kicks off.
There is something wonderful about watching a group of people who have been thrust together in such an unusual situation – who will make the most disastrous dish?...

"Do you feel the power of the Gladiators? Can you face the challenge of the champions? Do you have the courage of the heroes?
"Do you have the will or the skill? Do you have the strength, the speed the heart to be a winner? Deep down in your Soul?"

After 13 series, there have now been more than enough I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! winners to fill up their own all-star series.
They all had to endure creepy crawlies, tough Bushtucker Trials and mockery by Ant & Dec, but they all won the hearts of the nation for a couple of weeks.
Some of them may have fallen from grace since, while some have soared up the UK fame ranks. But who were the best champions from their respective series? Here's our just-for-fun, don't-take-it-too-seriously Top 13.
13. Carol Thatcher - Series 5 (2005)
Potentially the most surprising winner of the lot, no-one could have guessed that Margaret Thatcher's daughter would have been voted the nation's favourite.
Viewers were won over by how involved she was in the tasks, her no-nonsense attitude, and the fact that she was only up against Sid Owen and Cannon & Ball.

Actor Vinnie Jones has vowed never to participate in another reality show following his "degrading" experience on Britain's Celebrity Big Brother.
The Snatch star came third in the contest earlier this year, but he's ruled out an appearance in any other TV series.
Jones revealed he's been offered "a lot of money" to appear in I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! - but he's been put off after hearing about his former soccer player pal John Fashanu's experience of the jungle in 2003.
