Sao Paulo, Dec 30 (Ians) The sports world on Thursday reacted with sadness to the passing away of Pele, Brazil’s legendary player and three-time World Cup winner, paying rich tributes to the man known as The King.
Pele passed away at a hospital in Sao Paulo aged 82 after a month-long battle with respiratory and cardiac complications arising from cancer treatment.
“Gracias por todo lo que le diste al mundo del fútbol. Rip legend #Pelé (Rough translation: Thank you for everything you gave to the world of football. Rip legend),” tweeted former Argentine great Gabriel Batistuta.
“Rest in peace Pele, one of the greatest ever. What a role model on and off the pitch. Winner of 3 World Cups, unbelievable,” wrote England football Harry Maguire on his Twitter handle.

Vasco (Goa), Feb 11 (Ians) Hyderabad Fc are in the driver's seat in the race for the Indian Super League (Isl) playoffs while East Bengal need to win all the rest of their matches while needing a few results to go their way to make it to the playoffs. Beating Hyderabad, however, would go a long way in Robbie Fowler's team securing a playoff spot and they would be trying for just that at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Friday.
Sc East Bengal have had a stop-start debut campaign. They've spent most of the season near the bottom of the table. A win against Hyderabad will bring them to within four points of their opponents with three games left for the Kolkata club.

Margao (Goa), Feb 6 (Ians) Jamshedpur Fc are four points away from getting into the top four and will be looking to get as many of the required points as possible when they face East Bengal in the Indian Super League (Isl) at the Fatorda Stadium on Saturday.
After a five-game winless streak threatened their chances of making the playoffs, Jamshedpur managed to get back on track with a win over Odisha Fc in their previous game. Jamshedpur have also kept three straight clean sheets, a remarkable turnaround considering they conceded eight goals in their previous three matches. Their attack, however, needs to find form -- the winner against Odisha was Jamshedpur's first goal from open play in four games.
The last time these two teams met, East Bengal frustrated Jamshedpur despite being a man down for most of the game. East Bengal, on the other hand, are in desperate need of wins.

Vasco (Goa), Feb 1 (Ians) East Bengal face Bengaluru Fc in the Indian Super League (Isl) at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Tuesday as both teams look to stay in contention for a spot in the playoffs.
Placed second-last on the league table, Robbie Fowler's East Bengal have accumulated just 13 points from 14 matches.
The inability to convert chances has cost East Bengal points. They are currently on a four-match winless streak and have netted just 12 goals all season, which is the second-lowest tally in the league. East Bengal are currently four points away from fourth spot.
Similarly, Bengaluru have also been on a lean patch. They are winless in their last eight matches, having lost five of those and against East Bengal, they will be missing defender Erik Paartalu and midfielder Juanan.
Conceding goals has been a problem for Bengaluru, who have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 matches.

Margao (Goa), Jan 28 (Ians) A depleted Fc Goa will be looking to continue their six-match unbeaten run in the Indian Super League (Isl) when they face East Bengal at the Fatorda Stadium on Friday.
Goa will be without their two first-choice centre backs during the match. While Ivan Gonzalez was sent off in the 1-1 draw against Kerala Blasters, James Donachie sustained an injury during the match and has been ruled out.
Additionally, Goa will also be without their coach Juan Ferrando on the touchline after the Spaniard was suspended against Kerala. However, the absentees are not a concern for assistant coach Clifford Miranda who feels Goa are heading in the right direction.
"The most important thing about this team during this period (unbeaten run) is the adaptation to the new coach," he said. "From ones (that were there) to the players that he got, it's never easy. Step by step,...

However, wins have been difficult to come by for both teams and they would be hoping to come on top when they face each other at the Fatorda Stadium on Monday.
Chennaiyin have lost just one of their last seven matches. The two-time champions, however, have had five draws in their last 11 games, on par with East Bengal. Only NorthEast United have played more draws this season than the two teams.

Ajay, 21, is a defensive midfielder who joined Bengaluru Fc academy back in 2016 before being called up to the senior team during the 2018-19 season. The Manipur-born footballer made his Isl debut against Chennaiyin Fc as Bfc went on to win the title in the 2018-19 season.
Ajay, who will be available for selection against Kerala Blasters Fc on Friday, also had a brief loan spell at Hyderabad Fc last season.

Vasco (Goa), Jan 5 (Ians) East Bengal started the new year by finally recording their first win in the Indian Super League (Isl), brushing aside Odisha Fc. They will now be looking to show that the victory was not just a flash in the pan as they prepare to face Fc Goa at the Tilak Maidan Stadium, Vasco on Wednesday.
Both sides are set to clash for the first time and find themselves at opposite ends in the Isl table. East Bengal are placed second from bottom while Goa have jumped to third after late comeback victories over Jamshedpur and Hyderabad.

Vasco (Goa), Jan 2 (Ians) East Bengal face Odisha Fc in a bottom-of-the-table clash in the Indian Super League (Isl) at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Sunday. They are the only two teams that are yet to register a win this season and will be hoping to start the new year with three points.
Both East Bengal and Odisha have struggled for consistency at both ends of the pitch. They have scored just five goals -- joint-lowest this season so far -- while their defence lines have also been vulnerable.
East Bengal have conceded 13 goals, the most by any team, this year. Odisha, meanwhile, have shipped 11, joint second-highest with Kerala Blasters, in addition to being the only side to not register a clean sheet this season.

Vasco, Dec 26 (Ians) East Bengal are playing catchup with the rest of the teams in the Indian Super League (Isl) due to the late start they got to the pre-season, a combative Robbie Fowler said after their 2-2 draw on Saturday.
"It is easy to sit there and criticise us when we haven't won a game. I am not making excuses, I am giving reasons as to why we haven't got the results we wanted. We have shown a lot of passion and fight and we will win games. But we are massively behind, we were late to everything including the preparations and all we are doing now is playing catchup," said head coach Fowler in a post-match interview.

Bambolim (Goa), Dec 19 (Ians) Kerala Blasters and Sc East Bengal will aim to bag their first win of the ongoing season of the Indian Super League (Isl) when they take on each other at Gmc Stadium here on Sunday.
Both the teams have conceded 10 goals in their five matches. While their respective defences seem to be vulnerable, their misfiring attack is another huge concern. Kerala have had the lowest shots in the league (39) while the Kolkata side are second-lowest with 48.
Despite having good starts, both sides have failed to keep the momentum and dropped points from promising positions. Eight of the 10 goals that both sides have conceded have come after the break, highlighting their second-half struggles.
"Every match is a new challenge. We are in a similar situation. Both teams want to get three points. We are training well and trying to prepare for the match in the very best possible way.

Bambolim (Goa), Dec 15 (Ians) East Bengal finally scored for the first time in the ongoing Indian Super League on Tuesday, but Jacques Maghoma's brace went in vain as Aridane Santana's two goals and Halicharan Narzary's strike helped Hyderabad Fc continue their unbeaten run. East Bengal have now lost four of the last five matches and remain rooted to the bottom of the table.
Robbie Fowler's men took the lead with their first goal of the season in the 26th minute of the match through Maghoma. Aridane, however, swept aside any hopes of a first win for East Bengal two goals in the 56th minute that came with 39 seconds of each other. Narzary (68 min) put Hyderabad further ahead. Maghoma scored again (81 min) but Hyderabad held on for a 3-2 win.
Hyderabad were clearly the better side in the opening quarter and kept their opponents limited to their own half.

Goa, Dec 14 (Ians) After three consecutive draws, Hyderabad Fc will look to bounce back and register a win against bottom-placed Sc East Bengal in Match 29 of the Indian Super League at Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Tuesday.
The Nizams are currently unbeaten in the league after four games. But despite starting off with a win, they have even results in their last three matches. Another huge concern for the side has been their scoring ability. They have scored just one goal from open play (three altogether) and have the least shot accuracy of 20.68 per cent in this campaign.
However, Hyderabad coach Manuel Marquez brushed off claims regarding any pressure on his side. "For me, pressure is if you are at the bottom or these kind of things -- sorry because East Bengal are at the bottom. But our team is playing good football and we don't have pressure," Marquez said.

Vasco (Goa), Dec 4 (Ians) After successive defeats against Atk Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City Fc, Sc East Bengal will look to register their first win as they take on NorthEast United Fc in the Indian Super League (Isl) at the Tilak Maidan on Saturday.
Robbie Fowler's side is yet to score in the league and have conceded five goals in their opening two fixtures. The former Liverpool striker believes that it was individual errors that cost his side the points. "In all honesty, I will love to have them (more reinforcements) in all areas of the park. But I can't complain because we have what we have. Individual errors have cost us," Fowler said.
Meanwhile NorthEast will aim to carry on with their positive start to the season. "We want to compete. We are going in a good direction. We have to improve a lot. The goal for this season is to be competitive.

Since the Premier League began in 1992, Liverpool have suffered numerous highs and lows. Graeme Souness and Roy Hodgson both did their level best to drag the club into obscurity during their respective reigns as manager, while Gerard Houlller, Rafa Benitez and, currently, Brendan Rodgers, have all come close to bringing the glory days back to Anfield.
Throughout that time, some wonderful players have represented the Reds. Whether it be commanding centre-backs, world-class midfielders or lethal strikers, Liverpool have had it in abundance. The hardest thing is whittling down all those great players to a single best starting 11.
Who makes the cut up front out out of Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen, Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez? Which midfield enforcer gets the nod out of Didi Hamann and Javier Mascherano?

When the Spice Boys descended upon Anfield, they were either redefining the standard view of modern masculinity, or ruining a long Kop tradition, depending on who you asked. The metrosexual escapades of Jamie Redknapp, David James, Robbie Fowler and co – which saw them spending more time looking stylish, driving expensive cars and going clubbing than focussing on actually playing football, according to tabloids of the time – seemed slightly at odds with the history of footie-obsessed hard men that had played for Liverpool over the years.
It’s one of those often contested truisms that back in the “good old days” football was populated by “proper players”, which usually means they were mildly psychopathic alcoholics. Both of which are traits which, to be honest, does actually go a way to making you a more effective player: or, at least, a more terrifying one. The annals of Anfield...

When it comes to football, one thing that stirs more debate than most is transfers. Fans are obsessed with finding out which players are being linked with their respective clubs on a daily basis, as well as checking who appears to be nearing the exit door. As the years have gone by the transfer window has become something of a phenomenon, so much so that we are all now sick of the sight of Sky Sports News presenter Jim White.
Some signings can bring great joy to supporters- the day Robbie Fowler rejoined Liverpool was momentous, and Fernando Torres’ arrival was met with great glee too- while others can leave you deeply unhappy because they have a track record of being pretty forgettable players. There are often more of the latter than the former.

While the majority of footballers fall into either of those categories, there are also those players who,...

A League of Their Own is back tonight (August 29) and we're looking forward to seeing our favourite sports stars doing ridiculous things again - hooray! To celebrate the return of the show, we headed out to Elstree to hang out backstage with the boys - James Corden, Jack Whitehall, Jamie Redknapp and Freddie Flintoff - while they prepared for another show.
As well as making the frankly ridiculous decision to take on one of the endgames - we're not going to go into it, we're still cringing (and a little bit in pain) - we got the guys together for a bit of a chat, and found out what they had to say about some burning questions we have...
What's it like filming the show?
Like being back at school, apparently. But only the bit when school was fun. "I always think it's the one week of the year where...

Liverpool have a long and illustrious history, and inevitably have produced some wonderful players over the years both in terms of homegrown talents – like Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher – and marquee signings – Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Sami Hyypia and Luis Suarez. The successes of that illustrious lot were unrivalled in the red of Liverpool, but they were not the only players to sign or come through the ranks on the crest of a wave of optimism and expectations.
And sometimes, sadly, some of those players will fail.
Anfield is a wonderful place to ply your trade, but the pressure that comes with it is enormous. The fans are among the most passionate, and the most loyal around, but they also demand a certain standard. If a player is bought for big-money then they inevitably expect to see them justify their price tag on the pitch.

It is a frustrating occupation being a Leeds United fan. After dominating English football through the late 1960s and early 70s, winning three First Division titles, things soon turned sour for the Yorkshire club. Stricken with well-documented off-field financial woes, the club has been in a steady state of decline in the past decade.
Leeds’ demise, which has included a spell in administration – came about due to spending inordinate amounts on wages and transfer fees, with the likes of Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Keane and Robbie Fowler’s arrivals meaning The Whites were living beyond their means. But extravagant transfer dealings haven’t always been the only source of despair for the club’s faithful.

Five of the most promising rising stars of the youth team setup at Anfield…
5. Adam Morgan
Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen…. The 90′s saw Liverpool produce two of the finest strikers in English football, then nothing. Until now? There is growing excitement around Melwood that 18-year old Adam Morgan could be Liverpool’s new hope. A tally of 21 goals for the under 18′s saw him quickly rise to the reserve team, followed up with 3 goals in last season’s NextGen series, people are now taking notice. New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already heaped praise on the young striker after he scored his first senior goal for the club in a recent pre season friendly against Toronto.
4. Andre Wisdom

It was the most incredible penalty shootout of all time.
Shearer, Platt, Pearce, Gascoigne and Sheringham had all thundered home their spot kicks, as had Hassler, Strunz, Reuter, Ziege and Kuntz. The shootout had gone to sudden death. The first side to miss would surely be going home.
Then up stepped Gareth Southgate. He strolled into the penalty area, spotted the ball, walked backwards ten yards to the edge of the box, ran up and…
Well, the rest is, as they say, history.
Germany went through 6-5 and won the final of Euro 1996 against the Czech Republic for the first time as a unified nation, Oliver Bierhoff scoring the first ever Golden Goal to decide it.
That would be the last time England would grace the semi finals of a European Championship.
They were quarter finalists in Euro 2004, again suffering heartbreak in the penalty shootout,...
