Updated, with additional reaction: Liz Cheney’s new book is a scathing portrait of Republican “enablers and collaborators” who are responsible for the continued hold that Donald Trump has on the party, CNN reported on Tuesday.
With Cheney’s Oath and Honor set to be published next week, CNN Jamie Gangel obtained an advance copy and described it as an “unflinching” look at her former GOP colleagues. Cheney was ousted from Republican leadership as she continued to criticize Trump in the aftermath of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
“You get personal conversations, Republican meetings,” Gangel said on Jake Tapper’s The Lead, adding that Cheney recounts being on a Trump surrogates call on Jan. 4, 2021 in which she hears “the stark specific planning” for January 6th.
On that date, before the attack on the Capitol, Cheney recounts being in the GOP House cloakroom and members were asked to sign...

The CNN image for the past few years has been embodied by passionate on-air personalities like Don Lemon or Brianna Keilar. These days, it might best be symbolized by beat reporters like Jamie Gangel or Kaitlan Collins.
Gone in recent weeks (for the most part) are what had become the network’s signature red-versus-blue showdowns between hot-talking contributors or segments that hinge on an anchor scolding an interviewee. This is the kind of stuff that typically gives cable-news a viral boost. In its place, CNN is trying something else: the news.
And it could guide what three people familiar with the network say will be some sort of recalibration of on-air talent that could become more apparent this fall.
“CNN seems to be moving back more toward straight news and away from some of the blatant opinion-mongering by its anchors that characterized its past few years,” says Mark Feldstein, chairman...

As the entertainment world mourns the passing of Oscar nominee Ned Beatty, many stars are recalling arguably his most famous and ominous performance as TV executive Arthur Jansen in the Paddy Chayefsky satire “Network.”
In his tweet commemorating Beatty, “Karate Kid” star Ralph Macchio called “Network” one of the “greatest screenplays and films of all time” and commended Beatty’s monologue towards the end of the film as “ahead of its time.” In it, Beatty as Jansen gives a booming sermon to news anchor turned raging talking head Howard Beale for using his TV show to get his viewers to shut down his network’s merger with a Saudi conglomerate, putting the network in danger. You can watch the speech in the clip below.
Ned Beatty. Superb character actor – my fave being his brilliantness in Network (one of the greatest screenplays and films of all time) So ahead of its time.

Trump, as most know by now, is a Hall of Fame liar. A simple Google search of the president’s name and the word lie leads to a seemingly infinite scroll of articles that might just reach back to the creation of the Internet itself. But when Trump is cornered, as he likely felt this week following the release of damning audiotapes of himself talking to Bob Woodward in connection with a coming book, Trump becomes a liar on steroids.

CNN is taking some of its coverage of politics off the TV screen and putting it into a special live forum.
The At&T-owned cable-news network is set to launch “Citizen by CNN,” a day-long conference slated to be held Monday, October 22, at the Time Warner Center in Manhattan. While some of the panels and interviews set to be featured will likely show up on the company’s flagship cable network, says Sam Feist, a CNN senior vice president who serves as Washington Bureau Chief, the wider intent is for the conference to burnish CNN’s ability to present non-partisan coverage of politics and issues that matter to viewers. The looming midterm elections in November lend new relevance to such an event, he adds.
“We are the news organization, the cable-news channel, that doesn’t pick sides. We play it down the middle and we are focused on news and coverage that matters,...

This should about wrap it up. On Thursday morning's edition of CNN's New Day, Jamie Gangel metered out the first helping of her hot interview with former Vice President Dan Quayle, and although the former veep was a bit tentative in dipping his pota-toe into the Trump waters, he threw his support behind the presumptive Republican nominee, and advised other Republicans to do the same.

In his first television interview since dropping out of the 2016 race in February, Jeb Bush said he was "hopeful" that a contested convention would block Donald Trump from winning the Gop nomination. "There's a possibility that he won't get 50 percent on the first ballot," Bush told CNN's Jamie Gangel on Friday. "And if he doesn't do that, there are a whole lot of people who don't believe he's the proper guy." NBC's "Today" show discovered who Louis C.K. is this morning, giving the popular comic's comic a mainstream introduction to America's stay-at-home parents, unemployed people and children.
After receiving critical acclaim for the first two seasons of his FX show, "Louie," and having earned a spot on Time's list of the 100 most influential people, C.K. has risen to the top of the comedy world without sacrificing his genuine, self-deprecating and no-holds-barred humor. So when "Today" correspondent Jamie Gangel asked C.K. why he isn't a household name, he said that although he has thought about recording a "pure, clean" one-hour set, he simply isn't meant to be everyone's favorite comedian.
"I shouldn't be a household name -- I'm a filthy comedian," C.K. explained. "A household name is like ketchup. Everybody wants ketchup. Ketchup doesn't hurt anybody."

Gawker Media founder Nick Denton offered his own sort of mea culpa to NBC's weekly news magazine "Rock Center" on Wednesday night's show. Back in January, Denton's flagship website, Gawker, published an e-mail from the host of the show, Brian Williams, that elicited criticism from the network. When Jamie Gangel, reporting for “Rock Center,” asked Denton about it two months later, his first response was, “I messed up.” But when Gangel, who said Denton “burned” Williams, asked him if he would apologize, he declined. “No, it was a mess-up, internally,” Denton said. “But, no,...

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie often seems larger than life, and it's not just because of his "rubenesque" body type. Bestselling author Daniel Silva has left his longtime reps at Icm to sign with Robert Barnett, the D.C-based attorney at Williams & Connolly. The word in publishing circles is that this is a first step toward Silva shopping for a new publishing deal, one that might lead to his exit from Putnam. Silva had been with Icm since he transitioned from journalism to spy thrillers with the 1997 debut The Unlikely Spy. He is best known for the series he writes on art restorer/Israeli secret agent Gabriel Allon. Silva routinely lands on the bestseller lists, most recently for The Rembrandt Affair, which Putnam published last month. I’m told that Barnett is shopping to publishers and that Silva’s wife, NBC Today Show correspondent Jamie Gangel, will play a large role in making his next deal. British director Hettie Macdonald's debut feature, based on an acclaimed British stage play, takes place in a low-rent district in southeast London and depicts the burgeoning love affair between two young men. Although the picture mixes whimsy, romance and harder-edged drama in uncomfortable amounts, it has a certain charm that could win it an audience in urban situations with large gay populations.
The music of Mama Cass and the Mamas and the Papas permeates the film, which gives you some idea of its atmosphere. It concerns a group of teenagers who live as neighbors in the privacy-deprived Thamemead Estate. Jamie (Glen Berry), a quiet boy who likes to skip school and watch old movies, lives with his 35-year-old mother, Sandra (Linda Henry), a brassy barmaid with a propensity for telling off-color jokes during job interviews. Their neighbors include Ste (Scott Neal), a young man who loves sports and is brutalized by his drug-dealer brother and alcoholic father, and Leah (Tameka Empson), a 16-year-old dropout obsessed with the music of Mama Cass. Also on hand is Sandra's younger lover Tony (Ben Daniels), a hippie art-school dropout who considers himself particularly attuned to teenage concerns.
One night Ste stays over with Jamie in order to avoid another beating from his father. Sleeping together in the same bed, the boys discover their mutual attraction that throws everyone in their working-class neighborhood into a tizzy.
The picture's often-amusing dialogue and insightful characterizations aren't quite enough to compensate for its forced qualities and stagy situations. It doesn't help that the most interesting character is Sandra, so the romance that is the central focus of the film doesn't resonate as much as it should despite a climactic clinch filmed with the romantic fervor of a Bette Davis movie. Although "Beautiful Thing" has many small, finely observed moments, there are too many times when the artificiality of its stage origins becomes all too evident.
