London, July 11 (Ians) Claiming that “it is time for the global game to reset”, the McC World Cricket Committee (Wcc) has proposed for the International Cricket Council (Icc) to establish two strategic funds — one to sustain the Test cricket programme across the world and other for the development of the women’s game.
To help identify nations in need of support to sustain Test cricket, the Wcc has asked Icc to undertake a Test match financial audit to analyze the difference between operational costs and commercial.
This need could be subsequently addressed via a separate Test fund, established to protect the sanctity of Test match cricket, the Wcc recommended following the first meeting of 2023 in Dubai, in which it concluded that the game was at a crossroads with intervention required.
The committee has now released specific recommendations for the Icc to help ensure the long-term prosperity of the men’s and women’s international games.

New Delhi, Feb 24 (Ians) The McC World Cricket Committee (Wcc) has shown unanimous support to the law regarding the act of bowlers running out non-strikers over leaving their ground early, calling the law not only correct and necessary but issued a ‘call for calm’ to the global game.
The Wcc, which met at the Icc headquarters in Dubai last week, said through a statement that it is now calling for calm across all levels of the game, from the grassroots level of recreational cricket to the elite level, given that the act of running out a non-striker who opts to steal ground is within the Laws of the game.
“The bowler is not the villain here. Every batter has a choice, to stay in their ground, or risk being given out if they try to steal ground. If they choose the latter, they are the ones who are breaking the Law,...

Manchester, Aug 14 (Ians) Australia leg-spinner Alana King paid a fantastic tribute to the legendary Shane Warne in epic style, claiming the first-ever hat-trick in women’s edition of The Hundred, propelling her team Trent Rockets to defeat Manchester Originals by 43 runs.
Apart from finishing with figures of 4/15 from 20 deliveries, Alana took a spectacular diving catch and was also handy with the bat in hand, scoring 19 from just nine balls as Manchester’s chase of 120 was ended at 76.
Alana began by castling Cordelia Griffith (12). She then trapped Sophie Ecclestone for duck and clean bowled Kate Cross yet again for a duck to complete a spectacular hat-trick. She could have bagged four wickets in four balls if the Trent Rockets had gone for the lbw review against Ellie Threlkeld.
After the match ended, Alana hoped that Warne, the legendary leg-spinner who died in March this year, was looking down and feeling proud...

London, March 5 (Ians) Former England cricketer Mike Gatting was left in a state of disbelief after hearing the news of Shane Warne’s death on Friday at the age of 52. One of the top batters of his era, Gatting was at his wits’ end almost three decades back when Warne’s “ball of the century” […]...

Cricket has always had the aura of being an elite sport that stood for values appreciated in different walks of life. This is precisely why it has been a popular game for so long. The players in white amid the village greens, or at the stadium, were looked up to as gritty warriors representing a community, village, city, or a country, all aiming to succeed.
The cricket stars who shone as knights in white armour were revered, loved and idolised from the game's inception to our present-day heroes.
The rules and the playing conditions over years were tweaked to make cricket more attractive and absorbing. Similarly, cricketers' innovation in the art of batting, bowling, fielding, and even field placements has kept the game in motion.
One marvelled at the way W.G. Grace mastered the defensive stroke as well as his lusty hits in front of the wicket.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) England's past successes over India in India have come with the aid of sweep shots and they used the same stroke to grind the Indian slow bowlers on a flat, batting-friendly Ma Chidambaram wicket here on Saturday.
Skipper Joe Root got to his fifth double century, becoming the first player to get to the figure in his 100th Test. On Friday, he had waited for 50 balls before employing the sweep which he had used quite successfully during the tour of Sri Lanka. But once in and settled, he used it to great effect trying to spoil the line and length of India bowlers.
Ben Stokes joined in and swept quite a few balls to the boundary as the Indian bowlers struggled.
Former India wicket-keeper Kiran More tweeted on Saturday, "Saw #GrahamGooch sweeping @RaviShastriOfc and #ManinderSingh during the 1987 @cricketworldcup semi-final. Then @KP24 used reverse sweep quite effectively in...

New Delhi, Jan 7 (Ians) The way Shane Warne got Mike Gatting out in the 1993 Ashes series is every leg-spinner's dream delivery, says India's Yuzvendra Chahal.
On June 4, 1993 during his first Ashes tour to England, Warne got Gatting out with the ball which is touted as the 'ball of the century'.
During the first Test in Manchester, Warne flighted the delivery which pitched well outside the leg stump. Gatting offered his bat, and the ball ended up fizzing past it to hit the off stump.
"I started watching videos of Shane Warne sir, and that's where I realised what leg-spin is. He was my idol, and I wanted to be like him, bowl like him. You know, his name was all over the headlines and newspapers. I used to enjoy the way he used to trap the batsman. One class that he had was about controlling the drift, so that's what...

This spring no less than three British-made sports documentaries get a cinematic release. Does this mark the start of a new relationship between sport and film?
Sport and cinema have been uneasy bedfellows over the years, their dual history mapped out by a series of rather awkward public conjoinings. Football has long been something close to a running joke on film, its high points restricted to the Brian Glover Pe teacher bits in Kes, the luminous pre-modern internationalism of Escape to Victory, and any action movie in which geezer-for-hire and former Wimbledon clogger Vinnie Jones takes a beating.
Perhaps sport and film stand apart as poles: an oil-and-water collision of the loud, the outdoor and the boisterous with the dimly lit, the indoor and the ruminative. That might be about to change. This month three British-made sporting documentaries have had a cinematic release. Two are cricket films: From the Ashes...

My Ayrton-Senna-as-panto-villain stance had never been properly challenged until I saw a preview of Asif Kapadia's upcoming documentary
I have only the vaguest idea where I was when Princess Diana died, and hopefully you'll have guessed from the photo that I wasn't around for JFK. But I remember exactly where I heard about Ayrton Senna's death. I was in my dad's Volvo 245 Estate on the A1081 from St Albans to Harpenden, coming home from choir rehearsal. We'd seen him crash, live on television, earlier in the afternoon. They hadn't shown a replay. Now, two hours later, a radio bulletin was explaining that his brain injuries had been too severe for him to survive.
I remember feeling surprised and even a little guilty as the tears formed in my 15-year-old eyes, and Dad drove on in respectful silence. Senna, it's fair to say, had not been a much-loved figure in our household,...
