Left to live with her aunt (Beibi Gong) in Wuhan while her newlywed mother (also played by Gong) builds a new home in Shanghai, Guo (Tian Huang) lives an invisible life of someone who matters little to nothing to those in unwilling care of her. She is merely a presence and often a nuisance for no other reason than speaking or reacting. Not that her reactions are big – Guo is quiet, shy, and scared of life in this new, unwelcoming environment. But the space the now family of four is inhabiting is tight, and so is the budget, which Guo is reminded of on number of occasions.
Summer Blur is screening on Berlinale
Writer/ director Han Shuai puts a heavy weight on her heroine’s shoulders. Broken by her mother’s irresponsible decisions and by the lack of love in her aunt’s house, she is also in a very sensitive phase of growth.

Engineer Grace Wong is kidnapped by thugs looking for her brother. Though her captors have destroyed the telephone in the room she is being held captive in, Grace is able to use her technical skills to repair the phone enough to call a random number. She gets through to slightly hapless debt collector Bob and implores him for help, setting Bob off on a mission to save a complete stranger from a mysterious group of conspirators, putting his life and relationship with his estranged son in danger.
This Chinese-Hong Kong remake of Cellular (and based on the same script by Larry Cohen) hits a lot of the right notes to make a satisfactory, dynamic thriller. Benny Chan...

★★☆☆☆ Sometimes, you really have to question a film's motives. Inseparable (2011), directed by Dayyan Eng and starring Kevin Spacey, Daniel Wu and Beibi Gong, is a case in point. Li (Wu) is at the end of his tether. Unable to get close to his wife Pang (Gong) and caught in a moral quandary at work - where doing the right thing will inevitably result in his dismissal - he feels that life isn't worth living. As he's in the process of attempting to hang himself, he hears a knock at he door. Enter the enigmatic Chuck (Spacey), who makes Li see his situation from a different angle, setting him on a path which may just change his life for the better.
Inseparable is a film which raises a number of perplexing questions, in addition to the one posed in the introduction. Firstly, what, if any, is its message. Clearly aiming to...

Originally filmed in 2011, Inseparable is one of those movies that defies pigeon-holing. Pegged as a “buddy-cop” superhero movie, the film actually deals with the breakdown of a marriage, mental health issues and how one man can actually make a difference.
Inseparable tells the story of Li (Wu) who, after a series of tragic life events, is burnt out. His beautiful but increasingly moody wife is never home, the unpaid bills are piling up and his work is pressuring him to lie at a public hearing. With seemingly no options left he decides to end it all. But he can’t even do that right. Enter Chuck (Spacey), Li’s wise-talking American neighbour who takes Li under his wing and encourages him to stand up for himself and the exploited people around him.

Screened at the 2012 Terracotta Far East Film Festival. “Inseparable” is somewhat of a landmark event, being one of the first Chinese films to feature a bona fide Hollywood star in a lead role. The actor in question is Kevin Spacey, who shares top billing with top Chinese talent Daniel Wu (recently in “Don’t Go Breaking my Heart” and “Overheard 2”) and actress Beibi Gong (“The Detective 2”, “Connected”). The film was directed by Dayyan Eng, known for the romantic comedy “Waiting Alone” and the shorts “Bus 44” and “East 22nd Street”, and has a further international flavour thanks to the presence of cinematographer Thierry Arbogast, a long time collaborator of Luc Besson, having worked with him on the likes of “Leon”, “The Fifth Element” and “The Lady”. Daniel Wu plays Li, a young man who works as an artificial limbs designer and who is going through a difficult time, his parents having died in a car crash,...

Aaron Kwok returns as oddball private eye Chan Tam in “The Detective 2”, teaming again with director Oxide Pang for a sequel to their highly popular 2007 mystery thriller. Aside from a new case for Tam to solve, the film offers a different approach by aiming for a more psychological angle, venturing into some pretty dark and complex territory along the way. With Liu Kai Chi (“The Way we Were”) and veteran Patrick Tam (“The Storm Warriors”) also returning, the film adds several supporting cast members, including Eddie Cheung (“Vengeance”), Izz Xu (“Child’s Eye”), and upcoming Mainland Chinese actress Gong Beibi. Set again in Bangkok, the plot sees Kwok as private detective Tam being asked by police force friend Fung Chak (Liu Kai Chi) to assist him in investigating a particularly nasty serial murder case. The killings certainly seem to call for a man of Tam’s talents, involving three apparently unrelated victims,...
