Masters of Sex, Season 1, Episode 6: “Brave New World”
Written by Lyn Greene and Richard Devine
Directed by Adam Davidson
Airs Sundays at 9pm Et on Showtime
-
As Masters of Sex continues to grow and evolve, what’s increasingly clear is its clear affection for (and sly subversion of) classic Hollywood melodrama. That connection is made very explicit in “Brave New World,” whose two key motifs are the theories of Sigmund Freud and the novel (and subsequent film adaptation) Peyton Place. If anything, “Brave New World” too prominently pushes those motifs. All of a sudden, every character is bringing up, questioning or outright mocking Freud’s theories on female and male sexuality. To make Freud’s work such a prominent issues only makes sense; after all, his influence had barely waned even two decades after his death, but the teleplay is a little too insistent on making that omnipresence clear.

Regime change is coming to Starz’ Boss. We hear veteran TV producer Dee Johnson is coming aboard as co-showrunner of the Kelsey Grammer drama, joining Boss creator and executive producer Farhad Safinia.
Johnson has an impressive list of producer credits including ER, Army Wives, Southland and, most recently, The Good Wife. Boss is Safinia’s first TV producing gig and Starz initially brought in experienced producers Richard Levine and Lyn Greene to co-manage the first season. The duo exited in October and Johnson set to take over as showrunner for the second round, which was ordered by Starz before the drama premiered.

Richard Levine and Lyn Greene, the co-showrunners and executive producers of the new Starz series ‘Boss,’ have already left the freshman political drama, Deadline is reporting. Starz is currently looking for a new writing executive producer to join Farhad Safinia, ‘Boss’s creator and current executive producer for Season 2, which was greenlit before the pilot even premiered. Exclusive: Boss executive producers/co-showrunners Richard Levine and Lyn Greene are exiting Starz’ new drama series, which was renewed for a second season last month ahead of its premiere last night. The former Nip/Tuck executive producers shepherded the 8-episode first season of Boss alongside series’ creator/executive producer, Apocalypto co-writer Farhad Safinia. Safinia didn’t have TV experience before creating the show but I hear he proved a quick study during production of the first season. Search is under away for a new writing executive producer to join Safinia as well as the series’ other exec producers — director Gus Van Sant, star Kelsey Grammer, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov — for Season 2. Boss, from Lionsgate TV, stars Grammer as a ruthless Chicago mayor who has a secret that threatens to topple him. The series has received mostly favorable reviews, especially when it comes to Grammer’s performance.

Kelsey Grammer's new Starz series 'Boss' just premiered last night, and there are already big shake-ups behind the scenes.
According to Deadline, 'Boss' co-showrunners and executive producers Richard Levine and Lyn Greene are exiting the drama series, which was already renewed for a second season (yes, before it even premiered) last month.
Levine and Greene, formerly of 'Nip/Tuck,' were on board for the entire eight-episode first season to oversee things with first-time series creator and executive producer Farhad Safinia. Deadline's sources implied that Safinia was a quick study, but confirmed that the series is searching for a new writer/executive producer to join the team -- which also includes star Grammer, director Gus Van Sant, Brian Sher and Stella Bulochnikov -- for Season 2.

Kelsey Grammer will cut you.
That's the takeaway from the first teaser for "Boss," the new drama series from Starz that stars the multiple Emmy winner as the mayor of Chicago. His character, Tom Kane, has had a very successful run as the leader of the Windy City, and the people like him, but he's also made a lot of enemies and kept his hold on power through occasionally less-than-honorable means.
And also? Tom has a degenerative brain disorder that's starting to affect his work and his life. So that's not good.
"Boss" also stars Connie Nielsen (xx) as Tom's wife, Kathleen Robertson (xx) as a mayoral aide and Hannah Ware as Tom's estranged daughter, who may be the first one to realize what's happening to her dad. Farhad Safinia ("Apocalypto") created the series, which premieres in October, and executive produces it with Grammer, pilot director Gus Van Sant, Brian Sher,...

Denmark-born Nielsen, repped by UTA and Principal Entertainment, is best known for her starring role in Gladiator. While not truly a graphic or violent show (comparatively speaking), Nip/Tuck is nevertheless a show that not only pushed boundaries, but helped demonstrate the effectiveness of the broader narrative possibilities available to cable network television. The six seasons of the show delivered an outstanding variety of situations, both by way of the clients, and the doctors, and delved into the entire spectrum of the plastic surgery game.
The final season may have gone a little haywire at times, but it still had an ability to pull the pieces together, and overall the show stands above most. While many may be put off by the entire theory of exploring those seeking a bit more beauty by going under the knife, and the doctors who aid their effort, the show never failed to put its own subject matter on the back burner. Like any good show, the description only provides an...
