So, whilst Kim Jong-Un and Donald Trump are comparing the size of their nuclear weapons and super-storms are battering the world’s coastlines, the head of Nato is describing the present moment as the “most dangerous in a generation”. With any luck, the inevitable apocalypse may bring with it some fun real-life zombie larks to bring some light to the fast-approaching nuclear winter: what more prescient documentary-drama could there be, therefore, than Re-Animator cult hero Brian Yuzna’s Return Of The Living Dead 3?
Resurrected this month on Blu-ray as part of the gloriously tacky Vestron Video Collection, the second sequel to Dan O'Bannon’s classic eighties comedy horror adopts more of an angsty nineties tone as the monster-making Trioxin chemical returns to cause havoc all over again,...

With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Bottle Rocket (Wes Anderson)
Wes Anderson’s feature debut, the slyly comedic Bottle Rocket, positions its heroes, three young wannabe criminals with an eye for small-scale robberies, as blind innocents, lost in the unfamiliar world of adulthood. As part of his 75-year plan, Dignan (Owen Wilson) forms a gang, consisting of himself, Anthony (Luke Wilson) who’s fresh out of a voluntary psychiatric hospital, and Bob (Robert Musgrave) who...

The main crux of any superhero comic book is to depict the eternal war between good vs. evil in anyone of its myriad of forms. This is why most of us read comic books. It’s an innately understandable medium that conveys its own mythology through a dialogue that we can automatically make sense of. There is right and there is wrong, good and bad, heroic and villainous. This binary logic, while not completely flawed, is how most people not only make sense of the world at large, but also how they reconcile their own existence with that of their surroundings and experiences. From the menial conflicts we face on a daily basis, like being cutoff by some jerk off, who...

While I understand a filmmaker’s want to go above and beyond when creating a sequel, Hot Tub Time Machine 2 suffers from a serious case of “youngest child” syndrome. Steve Pink’s original time-traveling period-piece is a rather funny endeavor, only because it’s executed with a sensible craziness that boasts decent helpings of immature yucks to balance out some seriously rad 80s humor.
The sequel, trying to live up to its big brother’s legacy, essentially runs around with its dick in its hands for 90 minutes, craving the same adoring attention without exemplifying any of the previously successful methods. It’s basically Dumb And Dumber To all over again – take everything you thought worked from the original, and repurpose it a billion times over before absolutely killing whatever nostalgic enjoyment might have been attainable. Welcome back, gang!

Chicago – Before 1998’s “The Big Lebowski” there was 1996’s “Kingpin”, the Farrelly brothers bowling comedy that didn’t have the narrative intricacies of the Coen brothers’ classic, but had plenty of jokes about middle-aged men playing the sport. Today finds the release of “Kingpin” to Blu-ray for the first time, coming with only one new special feature.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
The occasion of “Kingpin” is related less to marking a point in American cinematic history than to note the upcoming release of “Dumb and Dumber To,” the next film from the Farrelly brothers and their bizarre set of Hollywood gross outs. This bowling movie was a followup to “Dumb & Dumber,” and certainly saw the filmmaking duo following some of the same course (by literally making a buddy road movie), with the gross-out humor that became huge of them. With films like “There’s Something About Mary” and “Me, Myself & Irene” coming after it,...

"Men always say that as the defining compliment, don’t they? She’s a cool girl. Being the Cool Girl means I am a hot, brilliant, funny woman who adores football, poker, dirty jokes, and burping, who plays video games, drinks cheap beer, loves threesomes and anal sex, and jams hot dogs and hamburgers into her mouth like she’s hosting the world’s biggest culinary gang bang while somehow maintaining a size 2, because Cool Girls are above all hot. Hot and understanding. Cool Girls never get angry; they only smile in a chagrined, loving manner and let their men do whatever they want.

2013 has come and gone and my thoughts on the best movies of last year can be seen here. Now it’s 2014 it’s another year for great movies; here is a list of movies I’m most looking forward to seeing and can only hope they don’t let me down. I didn’t forget the big ones that may appear on a lot of lists (X-men: Days of Future Past, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain America), I might even watch them; they just didn’t end up on my radar.
What are you warming up to see? Shout out in the comments below.
Update: I’ve gone ahead and added the trailers for the unreleased movies and shared my thoughts on the movies that have come and gone already. Was I right to anticipate these titles? Let me know in the comments.

Though the sequel to “Dumb and Dumber” had often been speculated about, it still came as a nice surprise to fans when it was officially announced, with Universal giving it a home. An even bigger surprise is the speed at which the film is coming. Due to the fact that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels both have projects in the pipeline, they have to start production on “Dumb and Dumber To” very soon. That means a production that had no traction just a week ago is about to see quite a few news updates. The first of which is that the Farrelly Brothers have found someone to score the soundtrack for the upcoming sequel.Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore from the glam pop duo Empire of the Sun have been approached by Peter and Bobby Farrelly to score the soundtrack for “Dumb and Dumber To.” The Australia-based band just recently...

TBS has ordered a pilot for 'Do It Yourself,' a new sitcom from executive producers and creators Walt Becker (Wild Hogs, Van Wilder) and Rob Long (Cheers, TBS's Sullivan & Son). The pilot is being produced by TBS. From TBS Do It Yourself is the story of Nick, a 20-something laid-off math teacher who finds himself thrust into the blue collar world when he gets a job at that most American of retail institutions: the big box home supply store. Nick quickly becomes the de facto leader of his band of misfit coworkers while also figuring out ways to redefine what it means to be a teacher. the world.Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TBSveryfunnyTwitter: http://twitter.com/TBSveryfunny | http://twitter.com/Tbspr...

Hello all! My name is Nick McCathy, and I’ve been a reader—and unfortunately infrequent commenter—of The Film Experience for roughly six years. Nathaniel recently introduced me here, and it's a pleasure to meet you all as well. I’ve written for The L Magazine, Boston Phoenix, Moviefone, and the Film Society of Lincoln Center Blog, and now I’m glad to find an occasional home here. I hope you find my credentials worthy, my spirit playful, and my addition to this palace of cinema and actressexuality that Nathaniel has built to be inspired.
In direct contrast to my introduction, I would like to start by celebrating a few celebrity birthdays, and congratulate them for continuing the tradition of living (well, except one of them).
Today, July 23rd, Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, turns 22. Potbellied, Oscar-winning master of schlub Phillip Seymour Hoffman turns 44. Potboiler-cum-masterpiece noir author (The Big Sleep,...

It’s time to look at the Hot Tub Time Machine reviews, and memorable quotes that may go into the film nerd’s vocab book.
The movie is directed by Steve Pink, who was co-writer and co-producer of two of Cusack’s best movies, High Fidelity and Grosse Pointe Blank. Besides from Cusack, look out for other 80s regulars Chevy Chase, Crispin Glover (Back To The Future) and William Zabka (The Karate Kid, always played the class bully).
Here’s what the critics are saying -
Roger Ebert -
“Hot Tub Time Machine, which wants nothing more than to be a screwball farce, succeeds beyond any expectations suggested by the title and extends John Cusack’s remarkable run. …high point is possibly Nick’s boozy phone call to his wife, who at the time was still in grade school. …Corddry essentially steals the movie as Lou.”

When I was a young lad my best friend, frustrated in love, would complain to me: "Hey, Harvey, how come the great-looking girls looked right past nice guys like me and always go for the bad guys-the black leather-jacket crowd with duck's-ass hair styles that work in gas stations and auto repair shops and act like they don't give much of a damn about them?" I answered with what was a cliché, even in my own youth: "Don't worry. They look to guys like us to marry because they know we're nice and would make great fathers. Sooner or later, they'll come around."

It was the third strongest box office weekend of the year, and that's coming on the heels of the strongest weekend in the last 16 months. So it looks like people are hungry for films, even if they aren't necessarily quality efforts. #1 movie predicted correctly: 5 Weeks In A Row 1. The Twilight Saga: New Moon Alert commenter Nick put a $41.7m call on the board on Friday morning, a very nice prognostication. It looks as though New Moon was even more frontloaded than Twilight, this fell over 70 percent. Still, it will hit $400m with ease, and as Eli pointed out - when a film passes that 2.5x its production budget threshold we finally consider it profitable. Result: 42.5 million (My rank: #1, $18.5m off) 2. The Blind Side Wow. It pulled off an old school trick, gaining 17.6 percent in its second weekend. Very well timed to coincide with the Thanksgiving holiday, where family films bank.

It's confirmed. Director Walt Becker's Old Dogs, starring John Travolta and Robin Williams, is as bad as it looks from the trailer. (And that's really bad.)
"...stupefying dimwitted."
— Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
"Wild Hogs, Old Dogs — what's next, Bumps on Logs? Truly, I would rather watch John Travolta and Robin Williams sitting on a tree trunk, doing nothing, than endure their best efforts to energize this ol' hound."
— Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune
"Old Dogs does to the screen what old dogs do to the carpet. It's unfortunate that only the latter can be taken out and shot."
— Kyle Smith, New York Post
"So wretched that it should be unceremoniously put down, Old Dogs is a series of sub-sitcom sequences designed to destroy any affection once felt for John Travolta and Robin Williams."
— Nick Schager, Slant Magazine

In honor of ‘500 Days of Summer’ going wide this week we wanted to do a top ten list that was music related. I recently watched ‘Juno’ again and I had to include her Sonic Youth jab somehow so what better way than a top ten music insult list?! I didn’t know how difficult it would be to come up with 10 of these, but we did it with a little help from our Twitter friends. Enjoy the list:
10. ‘Dumb and Dumber’
Lloyd: Hey, look, the Monkees! They were a huge influence on the Beatles.
09. ‘School of Rock’
Freddy: I’m just saying, name two great chick drummers.
Katie: Sheila E Meg White from The White Stripes?
Freddy: She can’t drum.
08. ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’
Nick: “Well, you’re two penises short of a Shania Twain reimagination band!”

Jim Carrey hasn't hit comedy pay dirt since Bruce Almighty (and even that's being generous). Looking back, his best roles of the last decade have been dramatic as opposed to the funny-man persona that made him famous all those years ago. While doesn't remedy Carrey's comedic drought, it at least gives us brief flashes to remind us why we used to like laughing with him so much. The reason his latest foray doesn't laugh us into hysterics is that it feels contrived. Yes Man reminded me of Liar Liar in its simplicity of plot that spirals out of control into hilarity. Being compared to Liar Liar should be considered an honor; though at the same time, the comparison doesn't do much to help sell Yes Man.
Carl Allen (Jim Carrey) will probably seem familiar to everyone - we all have a Carl in our lives.
