Liam Hemsworth finally takes the baton from Cavill for Season 4. Netflix states that the final two seasons will be filmed consecutively, meaning the grand finale won’t likely have to wait years to arrive. Netflix has officially begun production of The Witcher Season 4 and shared a sneak peek of the cast together from the recent table read. The streaming service has also given the green light to Season 5 of The Witcher, which will film back-to-back with Season 4 and will be the final chapter in Geralt’s story.
Seasons 4 and 5 will adapt the remaining Sapkowski books, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake, promising an epic and satisfying conclusion to Netflix’s hit fantasy drama.
After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the fourth season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other.
If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again.

The saga of Geralt of Rivia is coming to an end.
Netflix announced Wednesday that it has ordered a fifth — and final — season of The Witcher. The streamer also noted that season four, which will see Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt from Henry Cavill, has begun production. The final two seasons will film back to back.
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”

Henry Cavill’s days of playing our hero Geralt of Rivia on the Netflix series The Witcher are over – but the streamer is taking the risk of continuing the show without him. Liam Hemsworth is taking over the role of Geralt as of The Witcher season 4, and while we wait to see how Hemsworth is going to do in the role (and whether or not fans are going to accept someone else playing Geralt), Variety has revealed the names of three more season 4 cast members. They are Sharlto Copley (District 9), James Purefoy (The Following), and Danny Woodburn (Seinfeld). They note that “Copley will play the infamous bounty hunter Leo Bonhart from The Witcher novels. Purefoy will play Skellen, a high-ranking spy and court advisor to Emhyr who is also a prominent figure in the novels. Woodburn will play Zoltan, a fan favorite dwarf character from the novels and Witcher video games.

When The Witcher season 4 starts streaming on Netflix, our hero Geralt of Rivia is going to have a whole new look. That’s because Henry Cavill is no longer involved, with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt. Today, Deadline has revealed that Hemsworth is being joined in the cast of The Witcher season 4 by Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix and the John Wick franchise), who will be playing a character named Regis.
If you’re like me and don’t have any familiarity with the Witcher franchise outside of the Netflix show, chances are that the first person you think of when you see the name Regis is Regis Philbin. But, of course, Fishburne’s casting on this show is not going to require any sort of Philbin impression. Instead, the Regis character he’ll be playing is someone who was introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski’s novel Baptism of Fire.

The Witcher has found its Regis. Emmy winner and Oscar nominee Laurence Fishburne is joining the upcoming fourth season of the Netflix series as the fan-favorite character from The Witcher books and games.
Introduced in Sapkowski’s novel Baptism of Fire, Regis is a world-wise Barber-surgeon with a mysterious past who joins Geralt on his journey in Season 4. Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth, who takes over the role from Henry Cavill, who exited at the end of Season 3.
After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. SAG-AFTRA tonight responded to criticism of its interim agreements, saying that they are a “vital part of our strategic approach to these negotiations and to the strike.” The interim agreements allow truly independent projects to film during the strike as long as they agree to be bound by the terms of whatever deal the guild eventually reaches with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Critics include Sarah Silverman, who erroneously called actors who work on those projects “scabs,” though she admitted on social media last week that that “I know I just must not be understanding something.”

Javier Grillo-Marxuach, a veteran of the TV space who has most recently served as both a writer and EP on Netflix’s The Witcher — prior to the start of the dual strikes — has come forward to address accusations of “scabbing” prompted by his posts on social media.
Grillo-Marxuach joins a growing list of guild members, between WGA and SAG-AFTRA, that have faced harsh rebukes from peers of activity that is, in fact, guild-approved. Inciting this particular incident were social posts promoting the aforementioned fantasy drama, which as he notes, were made with WGA dictates in mind.
“Today i was accused of scabbing for posting about, and showing the title card and promo for #TheWitcher – which i did of my own volition and not at the request of my corporate overlords – and for engaging with fans of the show,” wrote Grillo-Marxuach. “While my actions are completely within the guild’s strike...

With Hollywood largely in lockdown due to two historic strikes and studios digging in their heels for what’s increasingly looking like a many months-long war of attrition, sensitivities amid the union ranks have never been higher.
So when an executive producer and writer for Netflix’s The Witcher tweeted about the show’s new episodes, it’s perhaps unsurprising the comments received blowback.

Netflix’s search for an AI Product Manager with a salary range of $300,000 to $900,000 has widely stirred reactions of disgust and frustration amid the SAG-AFTRA and WGA double strike.
Writers and actors are striking, in part, for new industry standards around artificial intelligence and the threat such technology potentially presents to creatives. Fifteen minutes before showtime, the crowd at Austin’s Stateside Theater was negligible. A few Atx TV Festival patrons were sprinkled throughout the theater, but the priority access and badge-holder lines amounted to just a few dozen fans. Soon, four WGA members would take the stage to explain why their guild was striking and detail the issues at stake — issues many consider to be a tipping point for the future of television.

“They shut down an entire industry rather than part with less than 3% of their record profits,” wrote Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost).

Patrick Somerville, creator of the HBO series “Station Eleven” and the Netflix show “Maniac,” was among a slew of Hollywood writers to weigh in late Monday after the Writers Guild of America went on strike, saying the union’s negotiating points firmly lined up with reason — and the studios knew it.
“We’re going to do this because our guild is strong enough to do it,” said Somerville, who had changed his Twitter ID to “Strikerick Somverville” in an apparent writerly flourish. “The ask is level-headed, and even they know that we’re right. Collective action is the one place they can’t win.”

Scores of WGA members have turned to social media to not only reveal how they voted on the strike authorization but to share personal stories about their low pay and lack of opportunities for advancement — assuming they are working at all.
In one case, a writer talked about stealing food from the Netflix cafeteria to help feed his family because “we had to write for many months for free and couldn’t take other jobs.” Another talked about having to go on Ebt despite selling a studio feature and optioning two pilots.
“So yes, the system is broken,” writes Alanna Bennett. “Yes, peak TV is over so we’re fucked in other ways too. But that next job you’re worried about finding will be Much harder to get & to live off of if we don’t get what the WGA is asking for in these negotiations.”

Shin’ichirô Watanabe, a key member of the original Cowboy Bebop‘s creative team, has weighed in on Netflix’s recent live-action take — and it’s safe to say he wasn’t a fan.
“For the new Netflix live-action adaptation, they sent me a video to review and check. It started with a scene in a casino, which made it very tough for me to continue,” said Watanabe, who wrote and directed several episodes of the late-’90s anime series, in a recent Forbes interview. “I stopped there and so only saw that opening scene. Pairing wine with movies! See the trailers and hear the fascinating commentary for these movies, and many more, at Trailers From Hell. This week, the scares come fast and furious as we pair wine with three movies suitable for the spookiest night of the year.
Night Gallery was the 1969 pilot for the television program, hosted and partly written by Rod Serling. You may remember him – who am I kidding… of course you remember him – from The Twilight Zone, the 1960’s series which was also hosted by Serling, sometimes with a lit cigarette firmly stuck between his fingers as he spoke. In Night Gallery, times had changed enough that he went without the ciggie.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Robbie Amell (Upload), Meng’er Zhang (Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings), Hugh Skinner (Mamma Mia Here We Go Again!) and Christelle Elwin (Half Bad) have joined the Season 3 cast of Netflix’s The Witcher.
Amell will play Gallatin. A born fighter, Gallatin leads an army of guerrilla Scoia’tael fighting on behalf of Nilfgaard. Unafraid to speak his truth, Gallatin’s loyalty to his people ultimately leads him on a collision course with Francesca over power.
Zhang is Milva. A human adopted by the dryads of Brokilon Forest, Milva is a fierce and talented huntress. Exact archery skills coupled with a stone-cold aptitude for survival make her a formidable adversary in the unforgiving Continent – those that cross her, do so at their peril.
Skinner portrays Prince Radovid. Royal playboy and younger brother to King Vizimir, Radovid finds himself suddenly a man on the inside of the Redanian Intelligence.

Cowboy Bebop is riding off into the sunset… but one of its writers isn’t ready to say goodbye yet.
Netflix cancelled the sci-fi anime adaptation on Thursday, less than a month after the freshman season debuted on the streamer. Expectations for the series were high — John Cho starred as an intergalactic bounty hunter in a new live-action take on the animated cult hit — but mixed reviews and a lack of buzz led to Netflix pulling the plug, despite spending years developing the show.

News came today that Netflix would not be moving forward with a second season of Cowboy Bebop, its once-highly anticipated live-action anime adaptation starring John Cho. The quick cancellation came less than three weeks after its November 19 launch.
Based on Shinichirō Watanabe’s cult anime series, Cowboy Bebop followed a group of misfit bounty hunters, led by Spike Spiegel (Cho) as they search for the galaxy’s most valuable criminals. Mustafa Shakir also starred as Jet Black and Daniella Pineda as Faye Valentine.
Cho was the first cast member to react to the cancellation, posting only a head-bobbing gif of Tom Selleck from a scene in Friends saying “I’m Okay.” He was later joined by co-ep Javier Grillo-Marxuach in the online mourning. See below for their reactions.

October 15 marks the end of Hispanic Heritage Month and some of the top creators in TV and film are punctuating it with a demand for change when it comes to Latinx representation — and they have every right to voice their demands. In fact, it is long overdue.
In an open letter to Hollywood over 270 Latinx showrunners, creators, and TV and feature writers, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tanya Saracho, Gloria Calderon-Kellett, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Steven Canals, John Leguizamo, Linda Yvette-Chavez, Carolina Paiz, Marco Ramirez, Javier Grillo-Marxuach and more are calling for systemic change in the entertainment industry.
The letter starts: “As we come to the end of Hispanic Heritage Month in the midst of a global pandemic and continued racial injustice, many of us in the Latinx community have found it difficult to celebrate. As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, more than 270 Latinx show creators, television showrunners and writers for screens both big and small have written an open letter calling for systemic change in the entertainment industry.
“We are incensed by the continued lack of Latinx representation in our industry, especially among the Black and Indigenous members of our community. Our stories are important, and our erasure onscreen contributes to the persistent prejudice that prevents real change in this country. This prejudice is not as overt as the one that keeps immigrant children in cages and separates families at the border, or as violent as the racism that is killing our Black, Brown and Indigenous community members at the hands of police. But when we are onscreen, we’re often relegated to stereotypes or villains,” the letter says.

It seems Netflix is really cutting back on its original output lately. At least, when it comes to TV series.
Over the summer, the streaming giant brought the axe down on a number of well-received and beloved shows, including Altered Carbon, I Am Not Okay With This, The Society and, of course, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, among others. Yes, the past few months have seen the company cut a lot of fan favorites and now comes another blow.
Deadline is reporting today that The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance will unfortunately not be receiving a second season. The fantasy epic is actually a reboot of a cult classic and without a doubt ranked as some of the genre’s finest output of recent years. At least, as far as the small screen goes. With an 88% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a whopping 95% from audiences, it seemingly went over well with everyone.

Netflix will not be returning to the planet of Thra.
The streamer has canceled its fantasy puppet series “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” after only a single season, Variety has confirmed.
The show was a prequel series to the original 1982 Jim Henson film, which tells the story of a group of young Gelflings who discover that their overlords — the evil, hideous Skeksis — are duplicitous and plan to consume their subjects’ life energy via the dark crystal in order to fuel their own.
News of the cancelation comes mere days after the show won an Emmy for best children’s series.

The legacy of The 100 exists because of the writing that defined it.
With writers like Charmaine DeGraté involved, it is no wonder that the characters and specific episodes have left such a lasting mark on the audience.
Charmaine is not only the name inspiration for the badass Charmaine Diyoza, but she has also proved time and time again how impactful her episodes are within the greater context of The 100.
Her character-driven and relationship-focused episodes always take the season one step further than it was before also manage to dig more into the characters that we know and love, even if it isn't always the way fans may want. It hurts, but it means something no matter what.

The Star Wars prequels have always been heavily criticized, certainly by the generation that grew up with the Original Trilogy. But in recent years, thanks to the generation that grew up with them instead coming of age and new fans coming to them from the Disney era content, their reputation has vastly improved. Recently, Twitter has been filled with praise for George Lucas’ second trilogy, with fans sharing what they love about the movies.
It all started with this tweet, which encouraged people to share “a genuinely nice thing” about The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

Javier Grillo-Marxuach, the man who has been hired to pen the screenplay for an upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular anime Cowboy Bebop, has a bone to pick with the 2017 film Ghost in the Shell. Talking to reporters over at io9, the Puerto Rican screenwriter criticized the Scarlett Johansson-led picture, which is also based on a famous Japanese intellectual property, for being too whitewashed.
Based on the manga of the same name by Masamune Shirow, Ghost in the Shell is a science-fiction story set in the future where law and order are enforced by a group of cybernetically-enhanced cops. According to “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” making-of documentary, Netflix’s prequel series first tested a version using computer graphics to create the characters, but ultimately decided that puppets were the best choice. And thank goodness for that. The use of puppetry creates a visual continuity with the original 1982 Jim Henson film and makes the performances far more compelling and immediate than CGI would. Plus, puppets are just goddamn funny.

“She looks like a Skeksis!”
On a crazy show like “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance” where the ruling Skeksis are literally draining the life force of their Gelfling constituents, one of the most shocking moments isn’t violent at all, but involves a head-to-toe makeover. With a struggle for the Gelfling crown at stake, Princess Seladon shows up in the throne room wearing a costume that makes her look like a mini Skeksis. She’s both menacing and magnificent, but most importantly, she makes her political stance abundantly clear; she sides with the Skeksis.

Jim Henson and Frank Oz first performed alchemy in 1982 with the dark fantasy film “The Dark Crystal,” which gained a cult following in the ensuing 37 years. Now, the spell has been handed down to a new group of practitioners who’ve expanded and even improved upon the original. “Age of Resistance” transforms pointy-faced Gelflings into dauntless, epic heroes and creates a world that thrums with so much life that viewers will also hear the song of Thra themselves. Oh, what a time to be alive and a puppet!

With “Game of Thrones” smashing Emmy and viewership records for its final season this year and a highly-anticipated “Lord of the Rings” series in the works at Amazon, it’s fair to say fantasy worlds and magical kingdoms are in right now.
Enter “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” a prequel series to the original 1982 Jim Henson film, which tells the story of a group of young Gelflings who discover that their overlords — the evil, hideous Skeksis — are duplicitous and plan to consume their subjects’ life energy via the dark crystal in order to fuel their own.
While “Thrones” and “Lord of the Rings” were clearly points of reference for writers and co-executive producers Will Matthews, Jeffrey Addiss and Javier Grillo-Marxuach, “The Dark Crystal” has one key point of difference: the show uses puppets instead of actors.

When Netflix announced that it would be doing a “Dark Crystal” series, the reaction was twofold and extreme. There were the diehard fans who couldn’t believe that they were getting another chance to dive into this world, and the neophytes who had no idea what they were talking about. For the latter group, the two most pressing things to know about the 1982 film are that it’s the result of Jim Henson building out a complex and surprisingly dark fantasy world populated by puppets built on a scale like never before (not even by his own legendary standards), and that it in turn inspired an intensely devoted fan base that exists to this day. In returning to “The Dark Crystal,” Netflix’s ten-episode series embraces both these factors, making for one of the most ambitious and immersive TV events of the year.

The executive producers of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance talk about how Jim Henson’s vision comes alive in the Netflix prequel.
There’s something about The Dark Crystal’s artistry in presenting characters and creatures that are designed and fabricated as fantastical figures controlled by human hands rather than by computer that transcends whatever motion capture or sophisticated visual effects can accomplish. With The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, Jim Henson’s darkest tale will return to a more vibrant time in the planet of Thra’s history, and the marriage of puppetry, practical effects, and CGI will be a wonder to behold when the series arrives on Netflix on August 30, 2019. Creators Will Matthews and Jeffrey Addiss along with executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach told us all about how the 1982 film made the journey to the small screen.
