The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

Van Partible's animated series "Johnny Bravo" debuted on the Cartoon Network on July 14, 1997. It was one of four new shows that Cartoon Network premiered in 1997 and 1998 that served as a declaration for a new creator-forward direction the network was taking. "Johnny Bravo" debuted alongside Genndy Tartakovsky's "Dexter's Laboratory," David Feiss' "Cow and Chicken," and Craig McCracken's "The Powerpuff Girls." In 1999, that lineup would be complemented by "Ed, Edd n Eddy," and "Courage the Cowardly Dog." These shows were all quirky and idiosyncratic and attracted a generation of fans.
"Johnny Bravo" was about a barrel-chested, Elvis-voiced lug who lived with his mother and attempted to find love in the big city. His buffoonery and vanity, however, usually kept him single. Johnny was played by prolific voice actor Jeff Bennett, who has been acting professionally since 1991. Van Partible had been working on a version of the show as early...

Timmy Turner was an average kid that no one understood. Now, in the first trailer for “The Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder,” we get to meet some other members of his family.
The new series, set to hit Paramount+ at the end of March, focuses on Timmy’s cousin, Vivian “Viv” Turner (Audrey Grace Marshall), and her new stepbrother, Roy Raskin (Tyler Wladis), as they navigate life in Dimmsdale with the help of the wacky fairies we know and love: Cosmo and Wanda.
Timmy himself will make an appearance in order to gift Cosmo and Wanda to the kids. And yes, he’s still wearing his classic pink hat. But, in place of his pink shirt, he’s wearing a Princeton sweatshirt — which might surprise fans of the original series, considering his relationship with school.
You can watch the full trailer for “The Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder” in the video here and above.

Animation luminary Fred Seibert’s FredFilms will team up with Chinese content production firm DeZerlin Entertainment for an incubator projected called “Hot Pot! Cartoons,” which hopes to bring emerging Chinese talent and content out to the global market.
In the project, FredFilms’ U.S.-based development and production team and Qingdao-headquartered DeZerlin will supervise up-and-coming Chinese creators to develop animated shorts for global distribution.
“Often what’s happening with Western animation producers is we’re looking to get a toehold into the China market because it’s so large. And that’s fine, but it always makes me go, ‘Ok, well, what’s going on there that we can bring here, rather than vice versa,’” Seibert told Variety.
The serial entrepreneur has been taking an incubator approach to animation for almost 30 years, focusing on cultivating seven-or-so-minute shorts that can then go on to spin off into major series. As president of Hanna-Barbera in the 1990s,...

It’s no surprise that director/animator Genndy Tartakovsky has become the cinematic leader of 2D TV animation. Going against the grain of the great dialogue-driven, comedic animation that dominates TV, Tartakovsky has instead offered bold visual storytelling that borrows heavily from movies and comics. Indeed, with both his Emmy-winning “Samurai Jack” and current Adult Swim series, “Primal,” the Russian émigré has achieved a masterful minimalism that is rare for TV. He has not only displayed stunningly graphic action, but also expressive silence. “As my career has been progressing, I feel that my timing has become slower and slower because I want to get to that level where you’re really looking at something,” Tartakovsky said. “Genndy has always been one of my animation heroes,” said director Jorge Gutierrez, who is currently developing the fantasy/adventure series, “Maya and the Three,” for Netflix. “He’s also an incredible role model...

Creator of The Fairly OddParents Butch Hartman just turned his show into an anime...well for a minute anyway. Hartman, who was supposedly inspired by One Punch Man according to his post on Reddit, did a short in which Timmy Turner, Cosmo, and Wanda take on Mr. Crocker in an epic battle that has to be seen to be believed.
Check it out below, and let us know if you think Hartman has a future in Japanese animation. ...

“The Fairly Odd Parents” has been around for 11 seasons and it’s made us laugh and the crazy situations that Timmy Turner finds himself in the middle of. The fairy godparents are more helpful than his biological folks and although this has been a bizarre twist since the beginning, we’ve gotten used to it and jut learned to accept it as a part of the show. Butch Hartman has done a great job in creating the popular animated series and he’s introduced enough new materials to keep it interesting and entertaining for all age groups throughout the years. As Pocket.watch builds a lineup of original programs and a roster of partners, it is turning to several high-profile creators, several of whom have roots in TV. Its latest deal is with Butch Hartman, an animator best known for creating the shows The Fairly OddParents and Danny Phantom, both of which aired on Nickelodeon.
Hartman will serve as a Senior Creative Consultant for Pocket.watch. In that role, he will advise the company on its content and partnerships. He is also set to create at least three original animated shows for the platform. “Butch Hartman is a creative force that has an uncanny ability to develop worlds that make kids stop, take notice and laugh out loud,” said Albie Hecht, Chief Content Officer at pocket.watch, in a press release. “I am thrilled to once again be working together on an entirely new slate of exciting properties, including our animated series for HobbyKidsTV.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit the Nickelodeon Animation Studio and their new Entertainment Lab in Burbank, CA. I chatted with Chris Young, Senior Vice President for the Entertainment Lab; Chris Savino, creator of The Loud House; and Farnaz Esnaashari-Charmatz, creator of Shimmer and Shine. I played around in their newly developed immersive and interactive Vr experience; sat in on a recording session for Shimmer and Shine; stopped in to say hi to Ciro Nieli, executive producer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and see his cool office; and viewed all kinds of creativity in progress during the studio tour.
And let me tell you: the experience was awesome.
As in, so awesome, I’m wondering how Alternate Me could get a job there. Because let’s be honest – there are office jobs that look like The Office, and then there are workplaces like Nickelodeon, which has slime stairs, a SpongeBob wall,...

Something that Deadpool has become known for that’s no doubt helped shoot his popularity into the stratosphere is his irreverent sense of humor. And although the subject of today’s discussion is not an official product of Marvel or Disney – or even Fox, for that matter – there’s no denying that it’s in keeping with the character.
Recently, animator Butch Hartman had the genius idea of combining his love for Deadpool with that of his equal affection of Disney, thus yielding a YouTube video that sees the Merc with a Mouth letting it go as he’s superimposed into various scenes from classic animated films.
Throughout the four-and-a-half minute compilation, you’ll see Wade Wilson invade clips from the likes of Steamboat Itchy Willie, Frozen, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, Lady and the Tramp, The Lion King, Aladdin and several others. As amusing as this endeavor is,...

Butch Hartman has a long and storied history of creating great cartoon shows. Not only is he responsible for The Fairly OddParents, the second longest-running Nicktoon on Nickelodeon, but he’s also created several other popular shows including Danny Phantom and T.U.F.F. Puppy. And now here he is once again with a unique new Nickelodeon show, Bunsen is a Beast.
Bunsen is a Beast is a cartoon about Bunsen (voiced by Jeremy Rowley), the first beast to be integrated into the Muckledunk Middle School, and his new human friend Mikey Munroe (Ben Giroux). It also features self-appointed school safety monitor and beast-hater Amanda Killman (Kari Wahlgren) and a collection of other oddball characters such as Ms. Flap (Cheri Oteri) and Darcy, who circle the main pair during their adventures.
But what is a Beast, per se? Well, in Hartman’s creation, even within the Beast world there appears to be great variety,...

Today, on his YouTube channel, he took some more modern cartoons such as Steven Universe, Adventure Time, and Gravity Falls and redrew them within his universe.

As you undoubtedly know, San Diego’s Comic-Con International happened this past weekend, and I was fortunate to be amongst the tens of thousands of attendees. There was, as always, a mega-ton to see and do, and it was hard to keep the Fomo (Fear Of Missing Out) from getting completely out of control over the 4.5 days of the con. To stay sane, though, at some point you just have to accept that you’re going to miss a bunch, and focus on what you do have the opportunity to see.

Of course, Nickelodeon is always on my radar, and particularly the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, which I adore. But even beyond the coolness that is the Tmnt, this year, Nickelodeon was focusing on its past – in the best way possible. Through its late-night programming block of “The Splat,...

Danger surrounds actress Kelly Hu today.
As the nefarious China White in Arrow, she plays the head of an assassins syndicate that goes head-to-head with Green Arrow; and in her new role as Cece on The CW’s The Hundred, she’ll be facing incredible odds in an enthralling, futuristic thriller.
But at no time was she in more danger than when she kissed Kirk Cameron in her debut role on Growing Pains.
Hu is among several notable actors whose careers took flight after taking their initial bow in a guest appearance during Season Three of Growing Pains. Four-time Academy Award nominee Brad Pitt played his first character with an actual name in the ninth episode of the season, “Who’s Zoomin’ Who?”; The Hangover star Heather Graham doubled that feat by portraying her first two “name” characters as Cindy in “Michaelgate” and as Samantha in “Some Enchanted Evening”; and Butch Hartman,...

Butch Hartman struck Nickelodeon gold (Orange? Slime?) when he created The Fairly OddParents, a duo of fairies who attempted to improve the lives of their two wards but often just made things more complicated via magic. The animation style was crisp with bold black and white outlines making the series sleek but still very cartoonish. About three years into the successful run of OddParents, Nickelodeon gave Hartman a second series, Danny Phantom, which, while retaining the same visual style foundation of his first series, received a slightly more mature twist to its aesthetic. Unfortunately, the visuals were the only real twist made and the Danny Phantom never managed to acquire the same wit or sense of creative wonder that made OddParents enjoyable across a spectrum of age groups. What Hartman delivered instead was a product with the same amount of flair but an episodic formula that could have been just...

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.
