It’s time for a new episode of the Best Horror Movie You Never Saw video series, and with this one we’re looking back at a 1991 slasher that had a rather troubled production but still managed to gain a solid cult following. The movie is Popcorn (watch it Here), and you can find out all about it by watching the video embedded above.
Directed by Mark Herrier, Popcorn has the following synopsis:
What could be scarier than an all-night “Horrorthon”? A group of film students finds out when they stage just such an event at an abandoned movie palace. In addition to the three features — Mosquito, The Attack Of The Amazing Electrified Man and The Stench — they decide to screen a bizarre short called The Possessor, whose creator, Lanyard Gates, killed his family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. Maggie has been having frightening dreams...

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

Two of my all-time favourite horror films are Michele Soavi’s Stagefright (1987), which sees a group of stage actors locked in the theater for a rehearsal of their upcoming musical production with a psychopathic killer; and Mark Herrier’s Popcorn (1991), which sees a murderer kill the attendees of a movie marathon in an old abandoned cinema. Why am I telling you this? Well Keola Racela’s Porno continues the same thematic tradition found in those films and other movies such as Fade to Black, Anguish and Demons, whilst also harkens back to that similar period in film history, setting this particular story in small-town America circa 1992…

The 1991 meta-cult classic Popcorn is finally making its way to Blu-ray thanks to Synapse Films. The film received a barebones DVD release from Elite Entertainment in 2001 that has been out of print for some time, making this a sought-after title that some purists will still prefer on the original VHS. Featuring a cohort of dorky film students hosting an all night horror marathon, Popcorn is a fun, ’80s-style slasher as well as a valentine to schlocky sci-fi of the ’50s and ’60s, featuring thematic elements that sit squarely between Friday The 13th, Part 6: Jason Lives and Wes Craven’s Scream.

When we think of the rise of the teen sex comedy in the current movie generation the focus easily moves to American Pie and maybe even Superbad. The brashness and move against being controlled by the ratings system pushed the boundaries of what could be included on-screen. Looking back to the eighties though there was a movie that arguably created the blueprint from which these films would work from. That film was Bob Clark’s Porky’s.
Set in 1954 we see a group of high school kids from Florida, trying to find the best way to get their friend Pee-Wee (Dan Monahan) laid, and finally “lose his cherry”. With a few disastrous failures under their belt,...

Recently on FEARnet, my fellow writer Tyler Doupe listed the top ten out-of-print horror films that fans go nuts over. Mark Herrier’s Popcorn (1991) is at the top of the list – and no surprises there – fans and distribution companies have been trying to get this film re-released for a few years now. There have been Kickstarter campaigns, social media campaigns – you name it – fans have tried it.
Popcorn is an interesting little film that came up against a few major hurdles during production; director Alan Ormsby was fired and replaced by Mark Herrier, and lead actress Amy O’Neill was also fired, and replaced by Jill Schoelen. Popcorn has reached such cult status that a VHS tape will run you up to $80+ on Amazon, Ebay, and other collector sites. Released on VHS in 1991 by Sony Pictures Home E, Popcorn also had a DVD release in 2001 through Elite Entertainment. Do I...

Anyone that knows me knows of my unapologetic love for the 1991 horror movie love note to b-movies that is Popcorn. Even its end credits song sings the praises of why we all go to the movies, hoping to be scared by monsters and maniacs, tarantulas and brainiacs…
Popcorn is a slasher movie William Castle would have loved. It's directed by Mark Herrier and stars Jill Schoelen, Tom Villard, and Dee Wallace-Stone. Film students running a b-movie film festival showing three not-so-classic fake movies of old (Mosquito!, Attack of the Amazing Electrified Man, and The Stench), each with its own built-in audience participation gimmick, fall victim to a theatrical maniac by means that tie in with the film’s gimmick.
Spoiler! I mean, how many movies can boast they feature not one, but two - Two - deaths by mosquito prop impalement?
Yeah, I heart this movie so much.

Dread Central’s next final girl, Jill Schoelen, was one of our busiest final girls working in the horror genre. The actress appeared in Wes Craven’s Chiller, The Stepfather, Curse 2: The Bite, The Phantom of the Opera, Popcorn, and When a Stranger Calls Back, firmly cementing her place as a beloved final girl of modern horror history.
The ironic part of it all is that Schoelen’s acting career was kind of a happy accident.
“When I started off in the business, I came in as a singer,” explained Schoelen. “Then from there, I’d get asked to audition for singing parts that had a little bit of acting. That turned into acting auditions that had a little bit of singing, and then it turned into full-blown acting.”
One of Schoelen’s first roles was in one of this writer’s favorite cult comedies of the 80s: DC Cab.

Craig Moss and Steve Schoenberg have been hired to write the remake of 1982's Porky's, which Howard Stern is executive producing along with Larry Levinson. Dan Gross and Steve Squillante are producing. Porky's, released in 1982, starred Dan Monahan, Mark Herrier, Wyatt Knight, Roger Wilson and then-newcomer Kim Cattrall. The film, which followed a group of high school boys on their mostly sexual misadventures, was a risque release for its time and a big hit at the boxoffice. Porky's cost $4 million to make but brought in more than $105 million and spawned two sequels, Porky's II: The Next Day and Porky's Revenge.
