Both the ÖFI+ scheme for local films and the Fisa+ scheme for international shoots are being significantly enhanced.
Austrian producers have welcomed the government’s plans to increase the overall budget for the Fisa+ and ÖFI+ film and TV incentive schemes to more than €130m in 2024, to support both local production and to attract international film and TV production shoots.

“Prince Aden,” a new drama by Italian directing duo Gianluca and Massimiliano De Serio, known internationally for their immigration-themed “Seven Acts of Mercy,” is among projects selected by Locarno’s Alliance for Development initiative.
The platform, now in its 8th year, is geared towards fostering co-productions between France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.
Inspired by the book “Partigiani d’Oltremare,” by Italian historian Matteo Petracci, the De Serio twins’ new colonial-era film follows the vicissitudes of a 16-year-old Somali named Aden Sicré who in 1935 becomes a soldier in the Italian army that invaded Ethiopia on Mussolini’s orders. In an unexpected turn, he becomes hailed as a war hero by the Fascist regime. Then a few years later Aden and other African fighters play a pivotal role in the partisan struggle against fascism in Europe.

With two new funding programs that could cover as much as 60 of costs for international feature film productions and the new state-of-the-art HQ7 Studios set to open in Vienna next year, Austria is stepping up its game in the film and TV sector in a major way.
Approved by the government last year and in effect since Jan. 1, the Fisa Plus incentive provides funding for international and domestic films and series, including TV and streaming production. The subsidy, which is not capped, also covers documentaries, animation, virtual reality projects and post-production services, including sound, music and VFX.
Specifically, Fisa Plus offers a 30 rebate plus an additional 5 “green bonus” for productions that follow environmental sustainability criteria, with maximum funding set at €5 million (5.4 million) per film and 8.2 million per series.
“It’s the biggest revolution in Austria’s film financing system since 1980, when the film funding system was introduced,” says Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu,...

“Corsage” will continue to be Austria’s official submission in the International Feature Film Oscar category, despite the charges against one of its cast members, Austrian actor Florian Teichtmeister, who was charged with possession of child pornography. Meanwhile, the film’s producers and its director-writer have released a statement on what they knew and when.
Film & Music Austria (Fama), the professional body in charge of all Oscar-related matters in the country, has decided to stick with the film. In a statement, the organization’s chairman, Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu, says Fama “condemns the pedo-criminal actions of the actor Florian Teichtmeister,” but adds: “Teichtmeister is not ‘Corsage,’ and this individual must be strictly separated from the outstanding artistic achievements of the director, Marie Kreutzer, and the team.”

The Austrian Parliament passed a package of laws on Thursday paving the way for a 30 film and TV production incentive, which also includes Europe’s first Green bonus as well as extra cash for productions with a high percentage of female heads of department.
The new law, which was presented by the Culture Committee with the votes of both the governing parties ÖVP and The Greens as well as the opposition parties SPÖand Neos, will come into effect on January 1, 2023.
In another key development linked to the law, all formats are eligible for the incentive, from features to TV, streaming and virtual reality and post-production.

Film in Austria, an organization that serves as the film commission for the country, has welcomed the decision by its government this week to introduce a 35 incentive for film and TV production.
The automatic, non-repayable subsidy, which will come into force on Jan. 1, 2023, will contribute a maximum of Euros 5 million (5.1 million) per film and Euros 7.5 million (7.64 million) per series. Applications will need to be made by a production service company based in Austria. There is a 30 cash rebate for each project, plus an additional 5 “green bonus,” which is dependent on the implementation of environmental sustainability criteria.
There is no cap on the fund that supplies the subsidy, which means the subsidy pool will never run dry, regardless of how many producers apply for the incentive.
The Film in Austria team said it was “delighted with this major step towards strengthening Austria as film location.”
It added: “The previous lack of...

The pickup follows the international sales success for the Match Factory with Von Trotta’s “Hannah Arendt” in 2012. The company also represented Von Trotta’s “Forget About Nick” in 2017.
“Bachmann & Frisch” tells the story of the author’s life in Berlin, Zurich and Rome, her relationship with Frisch, her trip to Egypt and her radical texts and readings.

The Beautiful Woman Sleeping
Director: Ulrike Ottinger
Writers: Ulrike Ottinger, Elfriede Jelinek
It is with great pleasure we feature the announced plans for a new film from German auteur Ulrike Ottinger, a provocative artist perhaps best remembered for 1981’s Freak Orlando, starring Magdalena Montezuma and Delphine Seyrig, an exemplification of her own surrealist style. Ottinger is also an applauded documentarian, her last project being 2011’s Under Snow. But it’s been well over a decade since we’ve seen Ottinger tackle a fictional narrative, the last being 2004’s Twelve Chairs. Around 2007/2008, an announcement was made for Ottinger to make a feminist vampire film about the infamous historical figure Countess Bathory, set to star Tilda Swinton and Isabelle Huppert. The project never got off the ground (and Julie Delpy went ahead with her own recuperation, The Countess). However, in early 2015, Amour Fou Films announced two projects with writer Elfriede Jelinek (author...

Production outfit Amour Fou is in development on two projects - including a “feminist vampire” film - with Nobel prize winning Austrian writer Elfriede Jelinek.

Speaking in Rotterdam, the producers revealed that the first project in development with Jelinek is La Belle Dormeuse (The Beautiful Woman Sleeping), to be directed by Ulrike Ottinger. It is described by the producers as “a modern feminist vampire story”.
The second is Die Liebhaberinnen (Women As Lovers), which is adapted from Jelinek’s 1975 novel of the same name and will be directed by newcomer Caroline Kox.
Amour Fou is already producing a short film by Kox, titled Casting A Woman.

We’re excited to see Hausner’s followup to her excellent third feature, 2009’s Lourdes, which starred Sylvie Testud and Lea Seydoux. While many had been hoping her latest would have been ready for a late 2013 release, we can look forward to seeing her latest get a prime slot at a major festival. Starring Christian Friedel, who many will recognize from The White Ribbon, Hausner seems to be positioning a new take on the period piece.
Gist: Amour Fou is inspired by the life and death of the poet Heinrich von Kleist and his partner in death, Henriette Vogel. However, rather than being a biographical portrait, the film is to be understood as a parallel about the ambivalence of love.

Vienna-based sales agent EastWest Distribution has picked up six new titles including Rotterdam premiere Whispers Behind The Wall.
Speaking exclusively to ScreenDaily at this week’s When East Meets West in Trieste, EastWest’s Sasha Wieser said that two of these titles will be screening in the festival programmes of Rotterdam and Berlin.
Polish-born Grzegorz Muskala’s dark psychological thriller Whispers Behind The Wall - a young law student falls for the charms of his enigmatic Berlin landlady with terrifying consequences - will have its international premiere in Rotterdam tomorrow in the Bright Future programme.
The feature debut is the first full in-house production of Sol Bondy’s Berlin-based One Two Films and Muskala’s graduation film from the German Film & Television Academy Berlin (dffb). It had its world premiere at the Filmfest Oldenburg last September and won the prize for Best Musical Score at the Kinofest Lünen in November.
