Robyn McCall will continue righting wrongs for another season.
CBS has ordered a fifth season of The Equalizer, its drama series starring Queen Latifah (who also executive produces) as McCall, a former CIA operative turned freelance problem solver for people who have nowhere else to turn. The show is a reimagining of the 1985-89 series of the same name and not connected to the Denzel Washington-led film franchise that’s also inspired by the original series.
With the renewal, The Equalizer will pass the original series in the number of seasons it has aired (though not yet in episode count — the 1980s series ran for 88 episodes, and the current show will end this season with 56).
With the pickup of The Equalizer, CBS has only one scripted series — NCIS: Hawai’i — awaiting word on its future. The network plans to announce its 2023-24 schedule on May 2.

“The Equalizer” has been renewed for Season 5 at CBS, Variety has learned.
“’The Equalizer,’ led by the incomparable Queen Latifah, has all the best elements of a powerful drama,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “The series is stacked with suspense, heroism, high stakes and formidable characters our audience roots for. We look forward to another dynamic season.”
With the renewal, the only current CBS series awaiting word of its fate is “NCIS: Hawai’i.” The network has renewed much of its scripted lineup already, including recent pickups for “Elsbeth” and the “FBI” franchise. CBS recently announced it was canceling both “So Help Me Todd” and “CSI: Vegas,” while shows like “Bob Hearts Abishola,” “Blue Bloods” and “Young Sheldon” are coming to an end.
Per CBS, “The Equalizer” is currently averaging over 10 million viewers per episode in Live+35 multiplatform viewing. The show is based on the 1980s CBS series of the same name.

CBS has picked up a fifth season of drama The Equalizer, starring and executive produced by Queen Latifah, for 2024-25.
As Deadline reported last week, the renewal was fully expected, with the delay related to lead studio Universal Television negotiating a deal with Queen Latifah. It recently closed, paving the way to a renewal.
So far, The Equalizer‘s seasons had been capped at 18 episodes, which is something top talent often request when signing on for a broadcast drama series. There was an effort in the Queen Latifah negotiation to increase the number to 20 or more but I hear Season 5 will again consist of 18 episodes.
After Elsbeth renewed and So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas canceled last week, NCIS: Hawai’i remains the only CBS scripted series in limbo.

As Deadline reported last week, Hawai’i’s future is said to be the subject of tough business conversations, with a partial Season 4 of 13 or fewer episodes still a possibility. It could be a final chapter for the show, the first installment in the NCIS franchise with a female lead.
The Equalizer has been a strong performer for CBS, currently ranking as the #8 most watched among all non-sports broadcast programs, averaging 7.89M linear viewers (in Nielsen most current data) and over 10 million viewers in Live+35 multi-platform viewership. It also is the #1 entertainment program among African Americans.

Co-produced by CBS Studios, The Equalizer is one of four drama series Universal Television, part of Universal Studio Group, makes for CBS, along with the three FBIs, all of which were also recently renewed, the flagship for three seasons.
A reimagining of the classic series, The Equalizer stars Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn.
Lorraine Toussaint, Tory Kittles, Adam Goldberg, Liza Lapira and Laya DeLeon Hayes also star. Andrew Marlowe, Terri Edda Miller, co-showrunners Joseph C. Wilson and Adam Glass, Dana Owens (Queen Latifah), John Davis, John Fox, Debra Martin Chase, Richard Lindheim (co-creator of the original series), Shakim Compere, Joseph C. In a move that I expected, Bet Networks today announced that it has appointed Stephen Hill as President of Programming. You'll recall that Loretha Jones exited the President of Original Programming position in September, after 6 years in service, spearheading the network's recent moves into original scripted programming. Reasons for her departure were not provided. In what the Bet press release calls a "newly created position," Hill - who was most recently President of Music Programming & Specials at Bet - will now oversee Original Programming, Music Programming & Specials, and the Bet News teams responsible for creating, developing, and...

Changes are a-happening at Bet; all as part of the network's efforts to rebrand itself, as a home for more adult content, perhaps? I wouldn't know, hence the question mark. Although there was that Beyonce situation... This news comes 2 months after Loretha Jones, who was President of Original Programming for Bet Networks for 6 years, and who spearheaded the network's recent moves into original scripted programming, stepped down. Also in September, the network extended its deal with Mara Brock and Salim Akil for another 2 years, locking down the creative couple at Bet through 2016. Their latest offering, "Being Mary Jane," returns for a second season in early...

Bet today unveiled its slate of new and returning series to advertisers at its upfront presentation in Los Angeles. Mara Brock Akil was front and center as her hit comedy series The Game was renewed for a seventh season, and her newest project, drama Being Mary Jane, originally picked up as a movie, was formally ordered to series. Other new series pitched to advertisers include a revival of standup showcase ComicView after a five-year hiatus, a weekly talk show starring Bishop T.D. Jakes, and Burns BBQ, a reality series produced by Arthur Smith. The network had the attendees on their feet with a performance by Chaka Khan, who sang her anthem Tell Me Something Good. With multiple cable networks, including Own, looking to tap into the strong and loyal Black TV audiences, Bet’s president of original programming Loretha Jones touted Bet as being “better connected” to the African-American community than any other network.

No big headlines from today's Hrts luncheon featuring several cable chiefs: FX's John Landgraf, Showtime's David Nevins, USA Network's Jeff Wachtel and Bet's Loretha Jones. Landgraf spoke candidly about the difficulty of making serialized dramas work on basic cable. He noted that viewers seem to watch only reality series and sports live and prefer to view serialized shows in blocks of several episodes at a time on their DVRs. That hurts ratings tremendously and puts a lot of pressure on scripted programming, which doesn't come cheap - Landgraf quoted a $200 million figure for keeping a basic cable drama series on the air for 7 years. Looking back at a show like Damages, while proud of it, Landgraf acknowledged that it didn't work for FX and he wouldn't do such serialized series in the future. Other tidbits from the luncheon: Nevins spoke about broadening Showtime's audiences, Wachtel called the final season...

Check out the below previews of an upcoming new scripted series from Bet, a network that isn’t known for crafting its own original scripted content.
It’s a half-hour comedy titled Let’s Stay Together, and is executive produced by Queen Latifah, who developed the series under her Flavor Unit Production company; Jacque Edmonds Cofer (Living Single which Latifah starred in) is its creator.
The show revolves around 5 young African Americans dealing with the complexities of relationships; its cast includes Joyful Drake (Beauty Shop), RonReaco Lee (Moesha) and Erica Hubbard (Lincoln Heights).
“I’m so excited about our foray into scripted television. There have not been a lot of opportunities for African Americans to see themselves on TV in scripted shows. If we want to portray the full breadth of the African American experience, it’s easier to do in the scripted world rather than reality television,” said Loretha Jones,...

Bet Networks has named Loretha Jones and Stephen Hill to its top programming posts.
They fill the void left by Reginald Hudlin, who stepped down in September after three years as president of entertainment.
Jones, who was senior vp development at fellow Viacom unit Paramount/MTV Films, will serve as president of programming, responsible for original programming, news, development, planning and acquisitions.
Hill had run the network in the interim in an executive vp position. He now is president of programming, responsible for music programming and specials.
