The second annual Stockfish Film Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland closed Feb 28 with its Shortfish film prize going to Like It’s Up To You by Brynhildur Þorarinsdottir.
The festival – not to be confused with the Reykjavik International Film Festival (Riff) – handpicks close to 30 local and international films and also showcases Icelandic works-in-progress (detailed below).
Films to screen included The Witch, The Diary Of A Teenage Girl, The Lobster, The Club, Arabian Nights, I Am Yours and Oskar Jonasson’s local romantic comedy In Front Of Others.
Guests included France-based director Rachid Bouchareb who presented his new film Road To Istanbul.
The event, which is a collaboration between professional industry associations in Iceland, hosted a lecture from Son Of Saul production designer Laszlo Rajk, a retrospective of Armenian director Harutyun Khachatryan, script training events and film music masterclasses.

Ivan Ostrochovský’s boxer drama Goat (Koza) has been named Best Film at the 20th Vilnius International Film Festival.
The film, which had its world premiere in the Berlinale’s Panorama section in February, won the ¨New Europe - New Names¨ competition at the festival, which ran from March 19 to April 2.
The film, about a former Olympic boxer who goes on a punishing ‘tour’ to raise some fast cash, also took home the Cicae Art Cinema Award.
Goat (Koza), which won the works in progress prize at last year’s Karlovy Vary, is handled internationally by fledgling sales company Pluto Film.
The ¨New Europe - New Names¨ jury, which included Chilean director Cristián Jiménez, Israeli actress Hadas Yaron, and Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov, gave its award for Best Director to Ukraine’s Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy for The Tribe and its acting honours to Hungary’s Márton Kristóf (Afterlife) and Bulgaria’s Margita Gosheva (The Lesson).

With the kickoff of the 37th Telluride Film Festival, so begins the 2010 Awards Season. Of special note are the special sneak previews of The King’S Speech starring Oscar hopeful Colin Firth, Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan via the Venice Film Festival and Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours. Also on the schedule are Mike Leigh’s Another Year, Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go with Andrew Garfield, Carey Mulligan and Keira Knightley, and Peter Weir’s The Way Back starring Colin Farrell, Mark Strong, and Ed Harris. Many of the films listed below will continue onto the Toronto International Film Festival which runs September 9-19. So fellow Awards Watchers…let the games begin.
