Bernie Taupin received a Musical Excellence Award at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony Friday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame cofounder Jann Wenner received a dig for his imprudent remarks on why certain people were included in his recent book, The Masters.
While promoting his interview-collection book in September, Wenner said that its lack of diversity in interview selections was because female musicians were never “articulate enough on this intellectual level,” and that Black artists “just didn’t articulate at that level.” The resultant outrage saw Wenner apologize, but he was subsequently dropped from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation’s board of directors.

Olivia Rodrigo has been added to the performance line-up of this Friday’s 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, and she’ll reportedly be appearing on stage with inductee Sheryl Crow.
The Rock Hall announced Rodrigo’s appearance today, posting on Instagram that the Guts singer “will perform with one of her heroes” at the induction ceremony this Friday. The mystery guest didn’t stay a mystery for long though: In an interview with The New York Times, John Sykes, chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, apparently couldn’t contain himself, revealing that Rodrigo will perform with Crow.
“Olivia Rodrigo is coming in this year,” Sykes said in the interview. “Last year she got up and sang ‘You’re So Vain’ by Carly Simon. She’s going to play with Sheryl Crow this year. It’s this mutual admiration that connects the past with the present.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has a new television home. The 2023 ceremony, which has aired on HBO since 1995, is moving to Disney+ and ABC as part of a new deal.

Around 10:20 p.m. on Saturday night, a shadowy group of figures walked onto the Farm Aid stage at the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. This was supposed to be the moment where Wille Nelson wrapped up the night, but there was no sign of the Red Headed Stranger or his band. Instead, another act was plugging in instruments on the darkened stage. There was no announcement of any kind, and the large screens on both sides of the stage went completely blank for the first time all day.

Charlie Watts successfully drummed with The Rolling Stones for decades. He has received praise for his steady timekeeping and anchoring force in the band’s music. This doesn’t mean that he never faced challenges while recording, though. On one of The Rolling Stones’ most well-known songs, Watts struggled to get it right. He ended up walking out of the recording session, causing a producer to step in and play the part.

It’s something I just never thought would happen. Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. It means a great deal that you would think of me. It’s such a huge honor.

Willie Nelson just got an only slightly late 90th birthday present: an impending induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, reports ‘Variety’. The country music legend was one of seven artistes announced on Wednesday morning as having been voted into the Hall, along with Kate Bush, Rage Against the Machine, Missy Elliott, Sheryl Crow, George Michael and the Spinners, ‘Variety’ adds.
There are six more inductees beyond that list, with the distinction of being selected by a Hall of Fame committee to join the seven performers who were voted in via general balloting.
These are singer Chaka Khan, instrumentalist-producer Al Kooper and lyricist Bernie Taupin, all in the ‘musical excellence’ category; pioneering rock guitarist Link Wray and hip-hop originator DJ Kool Herc in the ‘musical influence’ division; and ‘Soul Train’ TV host Don Cornelius as recipient of the annual Ahmet Ertegun Award, ‘Variety’ adds.

Like their unlikely namesake, the Zombies have had several lives since being formed by keyboardist Rod Argent and vocalist Colin Blunstone in St. Albans in Hertfordshire U.K. in the early 1960s. The first British Invasion act after the Beatles to score a chart-topping U.S. hit, with “She’s Not There,” the guys disbanded shortly before their 1968 soon-to-be-cult album, “Odessey and Oracle,” was released. That collection produced another stateside smash in “Time of the Season,” which Al Kooper belatedly convinced Columbia’s Clive Davis to put out.
Since Argent and Blunstone reunited as the Zombies in 2004, the group has released four albums, the latest being the Covid-delayed “Different Game,” on the indie Cooking Vinyl, which serves as the follow-up to 2015’s aptly titled “Still Got That Hunger.”

Gary Rossington, guitarist and longest-tenured original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, has died at the age of 71.
“It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today,” the band announced on Sunday (March 5th). “Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does.”
Rossington formed Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964 with childhood friends Ronnie Van Zant (singer-songwriter), Allen Collins (guitar), Larry Junstrom (bass), and Bob Burns (drums). The band spent a number of years touring small venues under various names and with several lineup changes before being discovered by Al Kooper of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut in 1973 with a lineup featuring Rossington, Van Zant, Collins, and Burns, along with guitarist Ed King and keyboardist Billy Powell. Dick Halligan, who won two Grammys for his early work with the group Blood, Sweat and Tears and later turned to film and television work, died Jan. 18 in Rome, Italy at age 78. The family cited natural causes.
Halligan was a member of Blood, Sweat and Tears for the horn-driven rock band’s first four albums. He played trombone on the group’s heralded 1968 debut, “Child is Father to the Man,” then moved over to keyboards and flute for their second album, the self-titled, “Blood, Sweat and Tears,” after co-founder and keyboardist Al Kooper left the band. With David Clayton-Thomas coming in as the grittier new lead vocalist, the group had a major commercial breakthrough and went from the counterculture cult popularity of the debut to winning the 1969 album of the year Grammy for the sophomore release. Halligan remained on board for two more albums before taking his leave in 1971.

Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band is a loving look at the memories of the founding guitarist and main songwriter of his band. Robertson is a storyteller, in verse or narration, and he has almost purely fond memories of the group, its music and the other guys in it: Drummer Levon Helm, who sang lead on some of their most signature songs, bassist Rick Danko and keyboardist Richard Manuel, whose vocals also led classic songs, and Garth Hudson who created soulful sounds from almost any instrument. The purity is put to the test, but who's telling the story? The guy who looked inside the acoustic guitar he was fingering and pulled into Nazareth with a heavy load but friends to help him bear "The Weight."

December 1969: The Rolling Stones are capping off their decade of triumph with a new album. It’s called Let It Bleed. The songs ooze doom, death, darkness, and destruction. Right from the start, it’s an album full of bad news, from the opening guitar shivers of “Gimme Shelter.” “That’s a kind of end-of-the-world song, really. It’s apocalypse; the whole record’s like that,” Mick Jagger told Jann S. Wenner in his 1995 Rolling Stone interview. “It’s a very rough, very violent era. The Vietnam War. Violence on the screens.

Michael Bloomfield was the guitar hero who wasn’t remotely interested in being one. Discovered in the early Sixties by Columbia A&r honcho John Hammond, Bloomfield and his bee-sting guitar became a showpiece of the genuinely street-tough Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Dylan’s gone-electric moment, including “Like a Rolling Stone” and his infamous Newport gig. Bloomfield’s subsequent band, the Electric Flag, may have been the first to fuse pop, blues, jazz, and soul, and Bloomfield himself was a wired, energized performer and interview subject—a natural star,...

There’s no question: this year’s Newport Folk Festival belonged to women. In 2019, Newport boasted the highest number of female acts in its 60-year history, incorporating a broad spectrum of voices: From indie heroines Black Belt Eagle Scout, Our Native Daughters and Yola, to Grammy winners Kacey Musgraves and Sheryl Crow. And consisting of Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, Natalie Hemby and Brandi Carlile, country music supergroup the Highwomen made a stunning live debut at the Quad stage on Friday — then on Saturday, an encore.

It’s the brightest debut feature of 1970, and perhaps the warmest movie ever about the American race divide. Hal Ashby and Bill Gunn’s work is inspired: rich boy Beau Bridges buys a slum tenement and launches a wonderful ensemble comedy-drama in confrontation with the fantastic quartet of actresses — Lee Grant, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey and Marki Bey. The humanist picture doesn’t cheat on its subject matter. The cast list contains fresh debuts and and more best-of-career showings: Louis Gossett Jr., Melvin Stewart, Susan Anspach, Robert Klein.

It’s hard to imagine now, but it wasn’t until Electric Ladyland that Jimi Henwas officially in charge of how his music would sound. His first two LPs had come out in 1967, a year in which he played more than 200 concerts with his trio, the Jimi Hendrix Experience. He’d quickly become a guitar-wielding megastar, so with his third album he decided to slow down a little and make a statement. He lost his producer in the process and his band fell apart, but by the time Electric Ladyland was complete,...

During the blues revival and rediscovery of the Sixties, few dominated like Paul Butterfield, the hard-puffing, hard-living harmonica player and band leader. Assertive and experimental Butterfield Blues Band albums like 1966’s East-West, featuring equally manic and inspired guitarist Mike Bloomfield, were essential college-dorm listening. And during the following decade, Butterfield’s mighty harmonica powered a version of “Mystery Train” at the Band’s Last Waltz concert and movie.

Columbia Records/Legacy Recordings today announced that it will release a new compilation of Bob Dylan recordings, “Live 1962 – 1966: Rare Performances from The Copyright Collections,” on July 27, digitally and on CD.
Most of the performances on the album have been previously available only on the extremely limited edition “50th Anniversary / Copyright Extension” albums, three highly-collectible compilations of rare early Dylan recordings released in 2012, 2013 and 2014 in order to prevent the recordings from becoming public domain; the relevant copyright laws have since been changed.
The album features recordings from the artist’s coffeehouse era, his 1963 breakout concerts at New York’s Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, a duet with Joan Baez from the historic March on Washington, performances from his European and world tours of 1965 and 1966 (backed by members of The Band), selections from the 1964 and 1965 Newport Folk Festivals and more.
