It’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since maybe the greatest TV show of all time first graced our screens, but here we are. To mark this wonderful occasion, we had the immense pleasure of speaking to two of tis stars, Dominic West and Wendell Pierce, alongside its genius creators, David Simon and Nina Noble. We discussed the legacy of the show, and how its imprint can still be felt in TV shows made today. They comment on whether they could’ve foreseen the reaction it got amongst the masses, and of course given that nothing in this world is perfect (though The Wire comes close), we ask Simon what he would go back and change, if he could.
We also talk about cast reunions, as West tells us why his good friend Pierce makes such a wonderful godfather to his child(ren) – and of course we speak...

David Simon isn’t messing with Texas, he’s done with the place — at least as a location.
The Wire creator took to social media this week to announce and reiterate he will not film an upcoming Lone Star-set HBO project in the state due to the odious abortion ban law recently put in place.
If an employer, this is beyond politics. I’m turning in scripts next month on an HBO non-fiction miniseries based on events in Texas, but I can’t and won’t ask female cast/crew to forgo civil liberties to film there. What else looks like Dallas/Ft. Worth? https://t.co/q6Py6XikYh

The funkadelic kinky series, which is the brainchild of The Wire creator David Simon and author George Pelecanos hasn’t pulled any punches in attaching leads in the form of James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal on a story that follows the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.

The Wire creator David Simon is writing another show for HBO, alongside author George Pelecanos and starring James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal.
The Deuce is a porn drama set from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s in Times Square, following the legalisation and rise of the porn industry. Franco stars as both down-on-his-luck bartender Vincent Martino and the irresponsible Frankie Martino, twin brothers operating out of Times Square.
Michelle MacLaren — she of Breaking Bad, Westworld, The X-Files, and The Leftovers fame — directed The Deuce pilot, and the look we get in this sneak peek bodes well for the visual style of the show. Franco also helmed two episodes in the eight-episode first season.

HBO is extending its relationship with "The Wire" pairing of David Simon George Pelecanos, giving his period porn drama "The Deuce" a series pickup. An episode count and premiere date have not yet been determined however.
The series deals with the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York's Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s which saw the bawdy lifestyle collapse with the rise of HIV, the violent cocaine wars and the renewed real estate market.
The story follows twin brothers Vincent and Frankie Martino, both played by James Franco, who became fronts for Mob control of the volatile and lucrative sex industry.
Maggie Gyllenhaal is set as Eileen 'Candy' Merrell, a Times Square hooker and veteran with an entrepreneurial bent who is drawn into the fledgling porn industry. Gary Carr, Margarita Levieva, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., Dominique Fishback and Emily Meade also star.

Williams, Sonja Sohn, Seth Gilliam, Jim True-Frost, John Doman, Tristan Wilds, Lawrence Gilliard Jr., and Jamie Hector reunited at PaleyFest to talk about the HBO show nobody watched at the time, but that everyone now loves. And there was no shortage of stories to tell, but perhaps the most enticing tale is about "The Wire" spinoff we never got. “We were actually trying to spin off the city hall show and do a political show,” Simon revealed to BuzzFeed News, explaining it would've focused on Aiden Gillen's politician Tommy Carcetti. “We wrote a bunch of scripts that would spin off after Season 3 of 'The Wire.' New York – The theater at the Paley Center was full tonight, and with good reason – the cast of "The Wire," along producers David Simon and Nina Noble, were present for a discussion and Q&A. HitFix's own Alan Sepinwall acted as moderator and the evening proved incredibly interesting. Anyone who has watched it, knows that "The Wire," which aired for five seasons on HBO, was a special show, and one that has only grown in stature and myth since it went off the air. Sepinwall probably described it best in his book, "The Revolution was Televised." He wrote that people will approach him and say, "I am ready to watch 'The Wire.' And they phrase it like that—like it's a religious obligation they are about to undertake, rather than viewing a modestly rated HBO drama." One look at tonight's audience, even as viewed via the livestream, illustrated just...

The East Coast branch of the Paley Center is in the midst of PaleyFest New York, which started last weekend and will run through Sunday. Like its La counterpart, the focus is mainly on current shows (and mainly ones that film in New York, or at least in parts east), but like its La counterpart so often features, there's a special reunion, and I get to moderate it: "The Wire." Winona Ryder, Jon Bernthal and Alfred Molina have joined HBO and David Simon's six-hour mini-series "Show Me a Hero" based on Lisa Belkin's non-fiction book.

The miniseries will star Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, and the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII) and Catherine Keener (Captain Phillips, Being John Malkovich). Academy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) is set to direct.
The series centers on Nick Wasicsko (Isaac), a big-city mayor who ends up in the middle of a racial controversy brought on when a federal court tasks him to build low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his city of Yonkers, NY.

New Orleans -- "True Blood" fans can soon concoct their own blood-red beet bisque, crimson sweet tea and other Cajun delicacies inspired by the hit HBO vampire drama and compiled in a new cookbook.
"True Blood" is filmed partly in Louisiana and is set in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps. The state's cuisine is often referenced in the series, where vampires and mortals mingle over bowls of okra gumbo, jambalaya, and red beans and rice.
The cookbook, "True Blood: Eats, Drinks, and Bites from Bon Temps," was compiled by Cajun chef Marcelle Bienvenu and is being released in bookstores on Wednesday, shortly after Sunday's broadcast of the show's fifth-season finale.
"I'm going to be honest with you, I had never seen the show before they asked me to do this cookbook," said Bienvenu, a chef from the Cajun town of St. Martinville, La., who lived in New...

"The Wire" creator David Simon has a new series on HBO, the New Orleans-set "Treme."
The size of the series order is still being determined, with the network eyeing a fall debut.
"Treme" is a post-Katrina-themed drama that chronicles the rebuilding of New Orleans through the eyes of local musicians.
Simon co-created the project with longtime New Orleans resident Eric Overmyer, after the two former "Homicide" writers had discussed doing a show set in the Big Easy for years.
"New Orleans is one of the most unique and essential American places, which is also very vulnerable," Simon said.
The "Treme" cast is led by another New Orleans native, Wendell Pierce, and includes Steve Zahn, Clarke Peters, Khandi Alexander, Melissa Leo, Kim Dickens and Rob Brown.
Despite featuring "Wire" alums Pierce and Peters, people expecting the same show will be disappointed, Simon said.
"This is not a 'Wire' redo with a New Orleans soundtrack,...

Danny Boyle, director of Slumdog Millionaire, won the Directors Guild of America award Saturday night. It was the first time Boyle has been nominated for the award.
Boyle beat out fellow nominees David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), Gus Van Sant (Milk), Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight) and Ron Howard (Frost/Nixon).
After taking this prize and the Golden Globe for “Best Director,” it seems Danny Boyle is the man to beat on February 22 at the Oscars. The DGA Award has matched the Academy Award for “Best Director” all but six times since 1948 when the guild started presenting awards. It was a well-deserved win for the British director.
I picked Slumdog over Dark Knight as my favorite film of the year for a reason. Christopher Nolan is my favorite director working today, but Boyle has proven he can conquer any genre with solid, underrated films. He made a name for himself with Trainspotting,...

The Little Movie That Could can do no wrong. Danny Boyle was handed the DGA Award for outstanding directorial achievement in feature film for "Slumdog Millionaire."
Boyle walked away with the honor Saturday night during the DGA's annual awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel. David Fincher ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"), Gus Van Sant ("Milk"), Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") and Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon"), who won the award in 1995 and 2001, also were nominated.
It was Boyle's first DGA nomination.
"If I can get here, you can get here," Boyle said from the podium, with the presenting Coen brothers behind him. "Dream hard."
It's been a miracle year for Boyle, the 52-year-old British director of "Shallow Grave," "Trainspotting," "A Life Less Ordinary," "The Beach," "28 Days Later...," "Millions" and "Sunshine." He's already been named the year's best director by several critics groups and took the top...

Although Ari Folman's "Waltz With Bashir" did not make the shortlist of 15 films under consideration for the best documentary Oscar, it is among the nominees for the DGA's doc award, announced Friday.
"Waltz" will compete with Gonzalo Arijon's "Stranded: I've Come From a Plane that Crashed on the Mountains," in which survivors of a 1972 Andes plane crash tell their story; Elizabeth Farnsworth and Patricio Lanfranco's "The Judge and the General," a look back at the investigation into the regime of Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet; Peter Gilbert & Stevie James' "At the Death House Door," an examination of the wrongful conviction of a Texas man executed for murder; and James Marsh's "Man on Wire," a study of tight-rope walker Philippe Petit.
All the nominees are first-time DGA nominees, with the exception of Gilbert (who won the DGA's doc award in 1998 for "Vietnam: Long Time Coming" and was...

Crime series does pay... huge emotional dividends
My only real complaint about HBO’s full-series box set of The Wire—the groundbreaking series about drug dealers, detectives, dock workers, students, reporters and pretty much everyone else in Baltimore—is the timing. This cinder block of a set, including 23 DVDs and an abundance of commentaries and features (many previously released on the series sets), arrives just months after the show’s final heart-rending, mind-blowing episode in March. It’s a handsome,...

"The Wire" creator David Simon is recruiting some old friends for his new HBO pilot "Treme."
"Wire" alums Wendell Pierce and Clarke Peters are set and Khandi Alexander, who worked with Simon on "The Corner" is in final negotiations to star in "Treme," which Simon created with Eric Overmyer.
"Treme," which takes its title from an area in New Orleans and is executive produced by Simon, Overmyer and Nina Noble, is a post-Katrina-themed drama that chronicles the rebuilding of New Orleans through the eyes of local musicians.
Pierce will play Antoine Batiste, an accomplished jazz trombonist who is now scratching for gigs, trying to support a live-in girlfriend and a new baby, while still carrying a torch for a failed marriage to Ladonna Batiste (Alexander), the mother of his two children, who is single-handedly keeping her bar afloat. Peters will play Albert Lambreaux, a big chief of the White Feather Nation trying to bring the tribe's members home.
Alexander is coming off CBS' "CSI: Miami" where she spent seven seasons. She could return to the show as a guest star, reprising her role as medical examiner Alexx Woods.
