A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.
Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

Warning: The Thing spoilers jump out of nowhere in this piece!
“The last place you want to be in a storm in Antarctica is locked up with a bunch of Norwegian guys,” Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), a Columbia graduate and vertebrate paleontologist, is warned as she is flown into the tundra surrounding “Thule,” the central research station in The Thing (2011). The sequestered Norse researchers have never seen John Carpenter’s claustrophobic 1982 alien invasion classic, The Thing. After all, director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and writer Eric Heisserer’s 2011 prequel is set at the Antarctic facility from which the very Thing from outer space splits at the beginning of the ‘82 film. So the newest movie, which is finding a quasi-renaissance on Netflix these days, is a translation of the prior events by Heijningen and Heisserer.

When your ultimate adventure becomes your ultimate nightmare. If you're into deep sea diving conspiracy thrillers, then we've got the perfect film for you. Titled Pioneer, this Norwegian thriller is about a team of divers who were part of risky experiments at the start of the Norwegian oil-drilling industry in the early 80s. The cast includes Aksel Hennie plus Wes Bentley, Stephen Lang, Jonathan Lapaglia, Stephanie Sigman and Jørgen Langhelle. The film already premiered in Europe last year and has been waiting for a Us release, however io9 has debuted a new Us poster and we thought it was worth sharing to bring some attention to this interesting little film. I'm intrigued by all the imagery, but I'm not sure if it'll be any good. Here's the latest Us poster for Erik Skjoldbjærg's Pioneer, similar to the Norwegian one, debuted from io9: Here's a photo from the film...

Breaking: For the second time this Berlinale, Magnolia Pictures has bagged U.S. rights to a NordiskTrust film from a sizzle reel. Magnolia has secured the Norwegian thriller Pioneer, which is being produced by Christian Fredrik Martin from Friland Film, the team behind Morten Tyldum’s 2011 sleeper Headhunters, which Magnolia also released. The deal comes right after Magnolia wrapped up a deal for Lars von Trier’s provocative film Nymphomaniac. The Pioneer deal was negotiated between Magnolia’s Dori Begley and Peter van Steemburg and TrustNordisk’s Rikke Ennis and Susan Wendt. Directed by Erik Skjoldbærg, the film stars Aksel Hennie, Wes Bentley and Stephen Lang in a high-octane conspiracy thriller inspired by 70s classics The Conversation, Three Days Of The Condor and Chinatown. The director helmed Insomnia. Miss Bala‘s Stephanie Sigman, Jonathan Lapaglia, Andre Eriksen, Jørgen Langhelle, Ane Dahl Torp, Eirik Stubø and David A. Jørgensen are also in the cast.

The Thing (2011) Film Review, a movie directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jonathan Walker, and Carsten Bjornlund.
One could say that The Thing (2011) is like the Halloween remake and the Star Wars prequels: the original is better than new incarnation in almost every way. Like the Halloween remake, what was copied over into this The Thing from John Carpenter’s original film was done better the first time and what material was originated in this film should have been expanded upon. Like the Star Wars prequels, The Thing should have created its special effects in the same manner as the original film instead of going the hyper real CGI route. In that way, this prequel and its effects could have seamlessly transferred the viewer from one film (the prequel) to the...

2011.s The Thing is an unnecessary CGI-slick prequel to John Carpenter.s 1982 classic sci-fi/horror film The Thing. It isn.t horrible and does several things right, but is easily forgettable as soon as the end credits roll. Based on John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?," the prequel was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Jørgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Røise, Stig Henrik Hoff, Kristofer Hivju, Jo Adrian Haavind, and Carsten Bjørnlund. Heijningen and company do an excellent job of tying the prequel to Carpenter.s film (a fire axe placed...

How does the 2011 'Thing' stack up against the '82 original?
By Kara Warner

The subject of film remakes and reboots has become a sensitive one. With two variations on that theme opening at the box office this weekend, "Footloose" and "The Thing," respectively, there are very defined, conflicting opinions on Hollywood's continued obsession with churning out new takes on old classics.
With regard to "The Thing," a prequel to John Carpenter's '82 film, the critical conversation is especially opinionated, given the fact that the horror community takes its films very seriously and that the original is so beloved by fans. Some critics were satisfied and entertained by Dutch filmmaker Matthijs van Heijningen's take on the film, along with the performances by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton and Ulrich Thomsen; some were not.

Let me begin by stating the obvious: following in the footsteps of John Carpenter’s The Thing isn’t an easy thing to do – pun intended. Although Carptenter’s movie bombed when it first came out in the summer of 1982 when E.T.: The Extraterrestrial was America’s outer space visitor of choice, VHS and cable brought The Thing to a wider and appreciative audience.
The Thing is not just one of Carpenter’s best movies, it’s also the benchmark for creature effects. Rob Bottin created all of the phantasmagorical transformations of the Thing ten years before James Cameron would pull off the T-1000 effects, and more than a decade from Steven Spielberg’s rampaging dinosaurs from Jurassic Park. Making a new Thing movie with CG effects seems almost blasphemous.
If you go in expecting that same level of intensity and greatness as is found in the ’82 Thing,...

Some of the footage in the video shows the creature design. But to me the most spectacular feature is that you can see how the Norwegian base camp is recreated almost identically to the one you saw briefly in the 1982 version. Even the block of ice that the creature escapes from is identical. Another great piece about this footage is that you can see the locale in which they filmed. This wasn't filmed in some studio, this was done in the snow covered mountains in Canada. The look of the 1982 film, with that feeling that the location was devoid of life outside of the camp really added to the creepiness of the overall film, and this one seems to be right on target. The prequel is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen jr. October 14 is just around the corner and I cannot freakin’ wait to see the prequel to John Carpenter’s “The Thing” when it finally hits theaters. I’m a fan of Carpenter’s, so I’m definitely looking forward to this film. Granted, we all know what’s going to happen to everyone, but I love the “who can you really trust?” paranoia vibe Carpenter established. But we’re here to talk about the upcoming prequel. After six new images from the film hit the web yesterday, the first clip from the film has been released, and it makes sure to set in the scare factor. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Kim Bubbs, Stig Henrik Hoff, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Kristofer Hivju, Jan Gunnar Røise, and Jo Adrian Haavind. Uploaded by the unofficial The Thing Facebook page Was Childs an alien? The second part of the Video really answers this question, but the first part is great as well. It's funny I've watched this film probably twenty times and I always ask that question once the end happens. Finally we have real solid reasons to backup the speculation that Keith David's character was in fact infected. See if you agree with the assessment. Having viewed the trailer for The Thing several times, we set down all that we’ve learned about this forthcoming prequel…
We've been waiting for some time to get a first proper look at director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr's 'companion piece' to John Carpenter's The Thing, and last Thursday, the first trailer was officially released.
Now, given that everyone involved in the film as insisted that it's a prequel rather than a remake of Carpenter's 1982 classic, it's remarkable just how similar the two films looks.
As you're no doubt already aware, The Thing 2011 is set in the Norwegian camp briefly seen at the start of the 1982 movie. Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the film's star, which makes for an interesting departure from Kurt Russell's alpha male lead in the original. Joel Edgerton, meanwhile, plays what could be described as the role previously filled by Russell. He plays a grizzled helicopter pilot,...

It may be the weekend, but what better time to get a little raunchy? A new teaser poster for Norwegian film director Reinert Kiil's Inside the Whore landed in our inbox today, and since it's decidedly Nsfw, Saturday evening is definitely appropriate for its debut.
Inside the Whore, Reinert Kiil's follow-up to his successful rape-revenge horror thriller Hora (English title, The Whore), is not for the faint of heart as the film's tagline describes it as "A meta-film with meta-violence within a meta-production". The director promises a film that beats Hora by milestones when it comes to cruelty.

The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman.

Universal pulled their Thing Prequel from its 29th April slot to allow Fast and Furious pole position (sorry for the racing car pun). The reason given was for ‘additional photography’ because apparently something ‘character development’ needed clearing up.
Now it’s been announced The Thing will be released on 14th October, 2011 – just in time for Halloween! Although Paranormal Activity 3 has stamped its authority on that period, too. There was at one point a fear the movie wouldn’t see the light of day at all in 2011 but now fears can be allied. We will get to see it next year!
Synopsis:
In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian...

It was pretty surprising to discover Universal took The Thing prequel completely off their 2011 slate. No reason was given, and many assumed it was a canny business decision to allow Fast and Furious a shot at the 29th April release date.
But no. Turns out The Thing was removed for reshoots or as the studio told Hitflix, “additional photography”. They also report the director (Matthijs van Heijningen Jr) has a rough cut of the film and that the reshoots will flesh out existing action scenes and clarify some plot points. Sounds like a load of old movie PR bullshit to me and what’s really happened is they’ve shot a movie the suits aren’t happy with.
I’m still rather concerned as to whether this prequel is actually a prequel at all and really just a revamp of Carpenter’s remake of Howard Hawks’ carrot man horror flick.

When news broke that Universal pulled its scheduled April 29, 2011 release for the prequel to the John Carpenter classic, The Thing, everyone assumed the worst. That is the easiest thing to do, after all.
Thanks to a recent interview over on HitFix with producer Marc Abraham, some light has been shed on the subject. The site reports of plans for upcoming additional photography on the film, adding that the filmmakers have a cut of the movie and that they are now hoping to use this next round of photography to enhance existing sequences or to make crystal clear a few story beats or to add punctuation marks to the film's feeling of dread.
