Chicago – ABC/Disney has released three of their Spring 2012 mid-season shows on DVD in time for, well, to say goodbye to two of them and catch up on the third. The releases for “Gcb” and “Missing” could have been labeled “Complete Series” as ABC pulled the plug on both shows but Shonda Rhimes’ “Scandal” is being given another chance to find a larger audience in the Fall. All three sets are well-loaded with special features.
To this critic, the show that ABC decided to give more time to grow — “Scandal” with Kerry Washington & Tony Goldwyn — is also the best DVD set to pick up. While “Missing” had some solid elements (including some well-choreographed action and a strong central performance from Ashley Judd), “Gcb” was little more than a “Desperate Housewives” clone before the original had even left through the Exit door. It was too soon, especially with the success of...

Palmreader are a 5-piece British hardcore band who are quickly developing a name for themselves. The band’s made up by Dave Wilkes (drums), Andy Gillan (guitar), Sam Rondeau-Smith (guitar), Josh Redrup (bass) and Josh Mckeown (vocals) who, if you’re really into your underground music, will remember as the vocalist of the new defunct Open The Skies. However, don’t confuse his previous project’s sound with Palmreader: the two bands have a very different sound, and Palmreader have a much more intense, visceral sound compared to the relatively accessible, melodic sound that Open The Skies utilised.
Not yet a year old, having been formed in the summer of 2011, they self-confessedly play loud, heavy, hard and fast, taking influence from the likes of established names on the scene such as Gallows, The Chariot and Norma Jean. The potential of Palmreader was evident from the beginning,...

Last night, Smash cast Marilyn Monroe in the big Broadway musical based on her life at the shows center. Or, did they While Ivy Lynn Megan Hilty may have done whatever it took to make an impression on the shows lothario director, Derek Jack Davenport, it was Ivys long-standing friendship with the songwriting team of Julia amp Tom Debra Messing amp Christian Borle and the belief in her readily apparent talent by the lead producer, Eileen Anjelica Huston, that really sealed the deal. So, where does that leave Karen Katharine McPhee In the chorus, it seems - at least for now. The drama escalated and reached an early peak along with the crescendos of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittmans smashing Twentieth Century Fox Mambo showstopper - the musical highlight of the impossibly strong second episode - as the heated fully-staged and fully-choreographed audition gave way to a dream reality which...

It seems like no matter where you turn in the pop culture realm lately, you are more than likely to find a reference to blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe. Nearly 50 years after Monroe died at the age of 36, she is still considered one of the most iconic figures in Hollywood history. So it's no surprise that in 2012 she is having another shining moment.
She was brought to life by Michelle Williams in her Oscar-nominated role in "My Week With Marilyn," was paid homage in Madonna's video for "Give Me All Your Luvin' " and channeled by Nicki Minaj in her leaked track, fittingly titled "Marilyn Monroe." And each week on the new hit series "Smash," two aspiring stars vie to play...

I, for the life of me, have never been able to get the allure of Marilyn Monroe. Sure, she was attractive, she could sing, and she slept with John F. Kennedy… but, so what? No, really: so what?
This is something I stand in a minority on. Believe me, I know. Just this winter season has seen My Week with Marilyn pull in the crowds with big numbers; really, any story centering on Norma Jean is bound to get someone’s attention. This latest one got a lot of people’s attention. According to ScreenDaily, Liz Garbus‘ documentary, Fragments, has pulled in these people: Uma Thurman, Viola Davis, Lindsay Lohan, Paul Giamatti, Ellen Burstyn, Evan Rachel Wood, Lili Taylor, Zoe Saldana, David Strathairn, Jennifer Ehle, F Murray Abraham, Vinessa Shaw, Michelle Monaghan, and Gretchen Mol. Not bad, for the most part.

Michelle Williams may also feature in film depicting squabbles between the two greats during the making of a 1957 movie
Kenneth Branagh famously found himself touted as the natural heir to Sir Laurence Olivier after reprising the actor's classic role for his 1989 version of Shakespeare's Henry V. So it's perhaps fitting that Branagh is in talks to portray Olivier in a film that will detail the latter's squabbles with Marilyn Monroe during the 1957 production of The Prince and the Showgirl.
Production Weekly reports that Michelle Williams, who starred in Brokeback Mountain and Shutter Island, looks likely to play Norma Jean. The film, My Week With Marilyn, is based on the diaries of Colin Clark, who worked for Olivier during the period and was Monroe's chaperone in London.
Clark, son of the art historian Kenneth Clark and brother of the Conservative politician Alan Clark, originally published his memoirs in 1958 but left out...

With news breaking earlier this week that a biopic of one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses was on the cards, I thought it would be a fair while before any images surfaced for the project. However the Cannes Film Festival, being the great deliverer of early teasers that it is, has been proudly displaying the first image of Naomi Watts as the treasured actress in biopic, Blonde.
The film, which is being brought to the screen courtesy of director Andrew Dominik and Wild Bunch, is slated for a 2011 production date, with release likely the following year. This from ScreenDaily:
Dominik, who last directed The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, explains his desire to make Blonde: “Why is Marilyn Monroe the great female icon of the 20th Century? For men she is an object of sexual desire that is desperately in need of rescue. For women,...

Following up on an earlier story, French site Allocine posted a picture of Naomi Watts dressed up as Marilyn Monroe for the upcoming movie Blonde. The movie will be directed by Andrew Dominick. If I'm not mistaken the film will focus on Norma Jean in her early years arriving to Hollywood before getting into her relationships with men like Joe Dimaggio and JFK. Which helps because Naomi looks rather thin for the role. Back then women had curves. I'm curious to see if she gains a little weight before the movie starts shooting early next year.Check out the pic below. Tell us what you think. Compare it to the pic used for the article. She could pull it off. I think she looks alright. Source: Allocine...

Marilyn Monroe is one of the most iconic celebrities of all-time (which is pretty amazing, considering she wasn't exactly a stellar actress) and this year at Cannes, there has been a lot of discussion about the dueling Norma Jean biopics.
One film stars Michelle Williams, the other Naomi Watts. Now, Williams is a fine actress and has more than redeemed herself from her "Dawson's Creek" days (Jen was kind of a pill), but I have a hard time seeing her as Monroe.
Watts, on the other hand -- well the Australian beauty certainly channeled her inner-Marilyn in this photo, courtesy of Allocine.
As John discussed last week, Hollywood has a tendency to make identical movies at the same time -- and with biopics, it can be especially difficult. After all, no matter how good Toby Jones might have been in "Infamous," it was really, really difficult to top what...

So why is it that Marilyn Monroe is such a hot property right now that two movies are being planned about her life? This is just guessing, but maybe it's because the 50th anniversary of her death is coming up in 2012. And if two bio-pics are set to go into production later this year and in 2011, respectively, that's pretty close to hitting the mark. Of course, it's a bit morbid to operate that way, but give me a better reason.
The first of the two is My Week With Marilyn, based on the book of the same name that chronicled Monroe's stint in England shooting The Prince and the Showgirl, which co-starred Laurence Olivier. The book was written by Colin Clark, who was a lowly production assistant on the film. That biopic will star Michelle Williams, who accepted a role turned down by Scarlett Johansson. There are currently two Marilyn Monroe biopics in the works. The first one, My Week With Marilyn, had already been announced, and has Michelle Williams in the lead (taking over for Scarlett Johansson). That film is based on a diary by Colin Clark, who worked for Laurence Olivier while he escorted Monroe around London while filming The Prince and the Showgirl. That Weinstein production, set to begin shooting this fall, will be directed by Simon Curtis.
Meanwhile, the just announced Marilyn biopic, Blonde, will feature Naomi Watts in the lead role. That one is based on the fake memoir by Joyce Carol Oates, which is the "story of Norma Jean as a central figure in a fairytale; an orphan child lost in the woods of Hollywood, being consumed by that great icon of the twentieth century." That one will be directed by Andrew Dominick.

Worthington is Allan Quatermain: Sam Worthington's blockbuster streak continues as he's grabbed yet another potential franchise leading role as Allan Quatermain, the hero of "King Solomon's Mines," a Victorian adventure novel by H. Rider Haggard, and its sequel, "Allan Quatermain." In the first book, Quatermain leads an expedition into an unexplored region of Africa to find the brother of a friend as well as a fabled treasure of the lost mines. DreamWorks is set to distribute the feature in which humans have left Earth and sees Quatermain return to the planet from a sojourn in space, embarking on another "King Solomon's Mines"-style adventure but on a planetwide scale. Mark Verheiden wrote the first draft of the script, but there is no word on whether or not a rewrite has been ordered. [Heat Vision]

Why have one biopic when you can have two? In December, we learned that there was a production called My Week with Marilyn in the works, which would have Michelle Williams play the iconic Ms. Marilyn Monroe. Deadline now reports that the Weinstein project will battle Wild Bunch for Monroe supremacy. They're whipping up their own film called Blonde, an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates' imaginary memoir that will star Naomi Watts as the blonde bombshell.
My Week with Marilyn -- Michelle Williams
This Weinstein production will look into Monroe's time in England as she shot The Prince and the Showgirl with Laurence Olivier. Ralph Fiennes was originally slated to play the iconic Shakespearian actor, but funnily enough, he bowed out to direct his own slice of old William -- the upcoming Coriolanus. They're currently looking for a new male lead in London, and Simon Curtis will direct.

After giving Chopper Reid and Jesse James the part biographical/part-dramatised treatment, Australian filmmaker Andrew Dominik is looking to do the same to Marilyn Monroe.
The Playlist reports that last year Dominik penned a script on spec based on Joyce Carol Oates' imaginary Monroe memoirs "Blonde". At the time it looked unlikely to happen as he didn't have the life rights to Monroe from her estate.
Now, Naomi Watts is attached to star, a $20 million budget has been set and Wild Bunch is currently selling the proposed film at Cannes. Dominik says “I want to tell the story of Norma Jean as a central figure in a fairytale; an orphan child lost in the woods of Hollywood, being consumed by that great icon of the twentieth century.”
Production kicks off next January for a likely late 2011 release.

Seven years passed between Andrew Dominik's directorial debut Chopper and his follow-up, 2007's Assassination of Jesse James. I've been offline quite a lot this past week so perhaps this is old news but last night I read a rumor that Scarlett Johansson might be offered the part of Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn. That's a future film based on a posthumously published diary by Colin Clark. He was under Sir Laurence Olivier's employ during the shoot of The Prince and the Showgirl when Marilyn was 30 and Olivier 50.
I love showbiz movies but I often wish that telefilms & movies would leave Marilyn alone. Better that Hollywood promoted Marilyn's actual work (still undervalued) than continually reanimating the corpse of her celebrity.
As for the possible Marilyns, Scarlett still hasn't really proven herself a viable box office commodity but she's held on to the #1 most-sought-after-young-actress title anyway. And for a surprising number of years now. That said, if we must see Marilyn revived again, I'd rather...
