The TIFF Platform comp title, official selection for Canada for Best International Feature Film category and sophomore feature by Ivan Grbovic was crowned Best Film at the Gala Québec Cinéma ceremony last night. Drunken Birds (aka Les oiseaux ivres) picked up a total of ten Iris awards including top categories Best Director, Best Screenplay (co-written with cinematographer Sara Mishara) , Best Actress (Hélène Florent), Best Supporting Actor (Claude Legault) and Best Cinematographer also went to Mishara who would end up competing against herself with Maxime Giroux’s Norbourg also getting a nom in that category.
Florent was the first actress in the event’s history to double down and win two awards – she also nabbed Best Supporting Actress for her part in Sébastien Pilote’s Maria Chapdelaine — that film also won Best Newcomer award for Sara Montpetit who was recently featured in Cannes in Falcon Lake — a film that will surely...

In a fairly crowded field of contenders, “Drunken Birds” just grabbed the nod as Canada’s best international feature submission to the Oscars. The reasons why are almost immediately apparent on seeing Montreal-born Ivan Grbovic’s sophomore effort, co-written with cinematographer Sara Mishara. Though more modest in length and scale (not to mention star wattage),
Admittedly, that bold, confident surface sits on a framework of rather basic melodrama it can’t entirely disguise. But moment to moment, “Birds” is an impressive leap from the director’s debut, “Romeo Eleven,” a decade ago, signaling another French-Canadian talent perhaps ready to follow Denis Villeneuve and Jean-Marc Vallée onto a bigger career stage. Les Films Opale released the TIFF-premiered film to Canadian cinemas last month.

Drunken Birds, the migrant drama from Serbian Canadian director Ivan Grbovic that had its world premiere in the Platform section at last month’s Toronto Film Festival, has been selected by Canada as the country’s entry into the 2022 International Feature Oscar race.
Written by Grbovic and Sara Mishara, the film (Les oiseaux ivres in French) centers on a quest for lost love that sends a man from Mexico to Canada, where he is hired as a seasonal worker. Fates intertwine, tensions grow, and moments of magical realism arise during the long workdays. Jorge Antonio Guerrero, Hélène Florent, Claude Legault, Marine Johnson, Maxime Dumontier, Amaryllis Tremblay, Karl Walcott, Yoshira Escárrega, Gilberto Barraza and Normand D’Amour star.
The film is produced by micro_scope and distributed by Les Films Opale. Wazabi Films is repping international sales. Drunken Birds was one of 10 films submitted to the pan-Canadian Oscar selection committee, Telefilm Canada said Monday.

We start at the end—the end of a cartel. Men climb the walls to go inside the now abandoned estate, walking amongst paintings and sculptures before stripping naked to take a dip in the indoor swimming pool while a giant portrait of their unwitting (and now imprisoned) benefactor looks on. One decides to don a fur coat as he rifles through the papers sitting on the kingpin’s desk. He picks up a note and begins to read before discarding it out of boredom. The voice of its author, however, continues to speak. Talk of a shootout, love, and emancipation follow until the smooth swoop of a tarp covering an expensive car transports us back to the moment the letter was composed within. The present provides the past.

After many months of speculation, Radio-Canada, a French Canadian TV network, has finally confirm that it will renew the procedural series 19-2.
According to Richard Therrien, a journalist from Le Soleil, Jocelyn Deschênes saved the show by joining it as a producer. After all, even though the first season was produced by Luc Châtelain et Pierre Beaudry, Radio-Canada wanted the inclusion of "an experienced producer" in order to renew 19-2 for a second season.
However, Therrien didn't confirm if Châtelain and Beaudry will return for the second season of 19-2 as producers.
The production on the show will begin in Spring 2012.
With the renewal, we will still follow the daily life of two cops from Montreal who happen to be partners (Claude Legault and Réal Bossé). Even though they hate each other, they learn to work together. Moreover, the first season left us when Ben Chartier (Claude Legault), a mole...

Unlike last year's two filmmaker/film horse race between Denis Villeneuve's Polytechnique and Xavier Dolan's J'ai tué ma mere, this year it was all "Villeneuve" and "Incendies". Repeating his wins in all the same categories it won at the Canadian Oscars (Genies) this week (this includes Editing, Screenplay, Best Cinematography by the excellent André Turpin, Best Actress in Lubna Azabal (who forced here co-star Melissa Desormeaux-Poulin to give her own thank you speech). These wins more than makes up for his loss last year when Villeneuve won the Best Director honor for Polytechnique, but lost in the Best Film category to J'ai tué ma mere. The predictable 13th edition also saw a Genie-Jutra winner from Barney's Version and in the Animated Film category, the Nfb (naturally) supported Theodore Ushev added a Jutra to his Genie for Lipsett Diaries. After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"The Thin Red Line" (1998)

No, you won't be getting the hours of deleted Adrien Brody or George Clooney footage from Malick's World War II epic, but this Criterion version is most certainly an upgrade from the previous bare-bones DVD edition with 14 minutes of outtakes, new interviews with Sean Penn and composer Hans Zimmer, among others from the cast and crew, an audio commentary with cinematographer John Toll, production designer Jack Fisk and producer Grant Hill and more.
"7 Days" (2010)
Directed by Daniel Grou
Released by Mpi Home Video
French Canadian horror author Patrick Senécal adapts his own novel to celluloid about a doctor (Claude Legault) who intercepts the man (Remy Girard) who raped and murdered his young daughter and turns the tables on him in a cabin in the woods. "10 1⁄2" portrays a troubled young boy of the same age, played by Robert Naylor, whose violent behavior finally receives treatment when he meets a social worker (Claude Legault).
The film is produced by Pierre Gendron, with Claude Lalonde writing the script.
The 39th edition of the Festival du Nouveau Cinema, to run from Oct. 13 to 24, will close with Cote's "Curling" after it receives a North American premiere in Toronto.

Director: Daniel Grou. Review: Adam Wing. 90 minutes can feel like a long time, especially if you’re in the company of Dr Bruno Hamel. Daniel Grou takes us on a dark and depressing journey into the heart of retribution with French thriller 7 Days. Dr Hamel (Claude Legault) lives a peaceful existence with his wife (Fanny Mallette) and daughter, but their happy home is turned upside down when the girl is left to walk to school on her own. Choosing instead to spend some ‘quality time’ with his wife, he somewhat typically falls asleep, missing the call from school asking about her whereabouts. It’s only when a classmate shows up at their door with his daughter’s homework that the alarm bells start ringing. Happiness is shattered when her body is discovered, raped and murdered in a nearby field. Bruno struggles to come to terms with the loss, and the...

The Canadian, French language production “7 Days” (“Les Sept Jours du Talion”) is a film which has been making a stir amongst fans of tough cinema following its well received and much talked about debut at Sundance in 2010. The film was helmed by television director Daniel Grou (who also goes by the odd name of Podz, and who was responsible for episodes of “Vampire High” and “The Hunger”), and was adapted for the screen by author Patrick Senécal from his own novel. Given its high concept torture premise, the film has unsurprisingly drawn comparisons with popular hits such as “Saw” and “Hostel”, as well as, more tellingly, the likes of Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist” and Michael Haneke”s “Funny Games”. Brave viewers can now judge for themselves, as the film arrives on region 2 DVD via E1 Entertainment. The plot doesn’t waste much time in getting down to business, as...

Here's the description of the synopsis taken from a review I wrote:
Bruno Hamel (Claude Legault) is a surgeon by trade. He happily lives with Sylvie (Fanny Mallette), his wife, and Jasmine (Rose-Marie Coallier), their daughter. During one day, Bruno allows Jasmine to go outside in order to deliver invitation cards for her upcoming ninth birthday. Of course, he'd like to accompany his daughter, but he's too exhausted by his job and neither can Sylvie. However, as times goes by, Jasmine is unaccounted for. In the evening, Jasmine is found dead in the woods after she had been raped.
When Jasmine's killer, Anthony Lemaire (Martin Dubreuil), is arrested and ready to go in court, Bruno has one idea in his mind:...

Now that English Canada has made a real war drama (Passchendaele), Quebec will follow with a war drama of its own. In fact, La cité, Kim Nguyen's latest film, will hit Quebecker theatres on April 9, 2010.
The film takes place in 1885 in Algeria at a time when it was a French colony. Dr. Max Orswell (Jean-Marc Barr) just went through a war that lasted 8 years. Now that the war is over, he's to be taken to a port by a caravan, because he plans to go back to France. However, that caravan doesn't come. Besides, the village Max lives in is struck by a strange plague and is forced to be isolated.
This war drama was produced with a budget of $4.8 million Cdn and it's a co-production between Canada, Switzerland and Tunisia. Moreover, it was shot in Tunisia and Italy.

Die hard fans of Patrick Senécal and movie goers alike will definitely like Les 7 jours du talion . Indeed, this is by far the best adaptation of a work from Canada's own Stephen King. However, if you have a weak stomach, avoid this film at all cost because of its very graphic scenes of violence.

Last summer, a fun little revenge thriller called Law Abiding Citizen was released into theaters. As dumb as it was, it was hard to resist the sweet siren song of a story about an ex-military engineer who uses ingenious booby traps to outwit bumbling lawyers and feckless civil servants. It was fun to revel in some harmless, impotent stick-it-to-the-man fantasy. I ate popcorn.
I did not eat popcorn during 7 Days.
7 Days is the polar opposite of films like Law Abiding Citizen, that gloss over human suffering in favor of the mystery and thrills of revenge. In fact, it's about as dire and as brutally violent as a film can get. It's a tragic story about a man descending into soul-shattering misery after his daughter is violently raped and murdered. This week you're probably not interested in what's opening in theaters, because like me you're too preoccupied with what's going on at Sundance. That's where the real action is for independent cinema right now.
So I'm doing something a little different this week, spotlighting three special films playing at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. As a special treat to non-festival goers, you have the opportunity to watch each film in your own home. It doesn't matter how far you are from the goings-on in Park City, Utah, just so long as your cable provider carries the VOD channel Sundance Selects.
Although I'm concentrating on this one specific service, let me remind you that other 2010 Sundance films are available to rent and stream on YouTube as well.

[Our thanks to Ryland Aldrich for the following review.]
Daniel Grou has taken a cue from Michael Haneke in the very uncomfortable French Canadian torture film 7 Days. Grou endeavors to explore the psyche of a man driven to the edge by grief. While it provides plenty of shriek-worthy visuals, the film's protagonist proves just too unsympathetic and the story ultimately disappoints.
Bruno (Claude Legault) is a doctor who works nights at the local hospital. Normally he would return home from work and take his young daughter to school, but one day she decides to walk on her own while mom and dad spend some quality time together. This results in tragedy and Bruno with the police when they discover his daughter's grotesquely brutalized body. A rift forms between Bruno and his wife Sylvie (Fanny Mallette) over the blame and Bruno sinks into a deep depression. The police quickly catch the killer and things look set for a speedy trial and easy conviction.

Your 8-year old daughter is kidnapped, raped and murdered. Her body is left out in the open, exposed to the elements to be found by whoever happens upon her. As a parent, what do you do? How do you cope? What form of justice seems fair in a world where something so terrible can occur? If these questions sound shocking and extreme, its because 7 Days deals with shocking and extreme subject matter.
Daniel Grou tackles these questions in 7 Days, or Les 7 jours du talion, his feature film directorial debut, adapted from and written by novelist Patrick Senécal. This French-Canadian production is a disturbing and poetically accomplished film of revenge and regret. 7 Days is at times terribly difficult to watch, but at other times is mesmerizing with its quiet, contemplative approach. The audience is taken inside the mind of a father who has tragically lost his 8-year old daughter in the most horrible way imaginable.

7 Days (Les 7 Jours du talion) Directed by: Daniel Grou Written by: Patrick Senécal Starring: Rémy Girard, Claude Legault I hadn’t read much about 7 Days before adding it to the list of films I wanted to watch at this year’s Sundance and, to be honest, I had completely forgotten what it was about as I made my way to the theatre to see it. A guy I was talking to earlier in the day had said it was one of the most offensive films he’d ever seen so I had an idea it would be a little controversial at the least. 7 Days follows surgeon Bruno Hamel as the murder of his 8-year old daughter manifests in him kidnapping the prime suspect and then embarking on a week-long period of torture as revenge. The film opens at the crime scene of Jasmine Hamel’s rape and murder and her...

There's an epidemic going around during past couple of months. People are killing young women-in the movies. In Peter Jackson's "The Lovely Bones," 14-year-old Susie Salmon played by Saoirse Ronan is raped and murdered near her home. The dead girl is intent on killing the murderer, whose death would release her from the clouds and gain her entrance to heaven. In Pierre Morel's "Taken," Bryan Mills, played by Liam Neeson, suffers the murder of his daughter. His response? "I know who you are. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not lok for you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you." Martin Campbell's "Edge of Darkness" finds Thomas Craven in pursuit of the shotgun slaying of his 24-year-old daughter. Forget the law. Justice is too slow. These survivors want revenge.

The entire list of 53 films is below, but here are a few that stood out to me from the premieres alone:
Mumblecore directors the Duplass Brothers, have a new, untitled movie starring an unusually high-profile cast compared to their usual improvisational crew. John C. Reilly, Marisa Tomei, Jonah Hill, and Catherine Keener. Reilly and Keener are actually in two films at the 2010 festival.
The Company Men, starring Ben Affleck, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Rosemarie DeWitt about corporate downsizing.
Rodrigo Cortes’ Buried, starring Ryan Reynolds as a man buried alive in a coffin. I’ve read the script and its great. More on that as soon as I can.

The North American premiere of "Splice", a France-Canadian co-production, directed by Vincenzo Natali, will screen at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in the Park City At Midnight program.
Filmed in Toronto at Black Creek Pioneer Village, Cinespace Film Studios and York University, "Splice" follows 'Elsa' and 'Clive', two young scientists, who defy legal and ethical boundaries by conducting a dangerous experiment, splicing together human and animal DNA to create a new organism.
Named 'Dren', the creature develops from a deformed female into a beautiful winged chimera, forging a bond with both creators. Cast also includes Adrien "The Pianist" Brody, Sarah Polley, Delphine Chaneac and David Hewlett.
Other Canadian features screening at the Sundance Midnight program include the horror spoof "Tucker and Dale vs. Evil", directed by Eli Craig, written by Craig & Morgan Jurgenson and "7 Days", directed by Daniel Grou, written by Patrick Senecal.

Yesterday we got the list for the films playing in competition at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and today we get the rest of the films that will be featured and there are quite a few that make 2010 look much stronger based on pedigree alone than I have seen in quite some time. Variety has a big write-up detailing the categories and more on the festival right here, but I am just going to offer up the titles and let you sort it all out.
The titles already in the RopeofSilicon database are linked.
Premieres
All films are from the United States unless otherwise noted Abel (Mexico-u.S.), the directorial debut of actor Diego Luna, written by Luna and Agusto Mendoza, about a peculiar young boy who, as he blurs reality and fantasy, takes over the responsibilities of a family man in his father's absence. With Jose Maria Yazpik, Karina Gidi,...

In addition to the competition titles which were announced yesterday, Sundance has announced the remainder of their line-up and it includes some titles we’re already familiar with along with a huge number of premieres.
Also on the docket are two new series: Next which showcases low/no budget films and Spotlight which highlights films which festival programmers deem worthy of extra love including Enter the Void (review) and Lourdes (the trailer for which I really liked).
I’m particularly excited to see some of the titles in the New Frontier program but overall, the line-up is an impressive one but the Kristen Stewart fan in me is excited to see her turn as Joan Jett in The Runaways and I think it’s fair to say we’re all dying to see Vincenzo Natali’s hotly anticipated Splice (trailer).
In the Midnight section, Adam Green's Frozen is sounding mighty find,...
